Everyday Stewardship

For all I know this Everyday Stewardship reflection is the last

one you will ever read. That's not because I fear you will no

longer get something out of reading these. At least, I hope not! It

is because Jesus may very well return by this time next week.

Then there will be no more need for reflections like these in bul-

letins, on websites, or wherever else you are reading this. You

think the odds are against this happening in the next few days? I

can gamble from time to time but I guess this is not something I

am willing to say won't happen for sure. We do believe Jesus

will come again, don't we?

For all of us there are things we put off until tomorrow. Some-

times, that tomorrow never comes. We act like we have all the

time in the world. However, time on this earth is for certain one

thing that does not exist in unlimited supply. Death is the primary

way earthly time ends for us. Yet there will come a time when

Jesus returns and if you and I are still living at that time, I hope

he finds us ready.

Are you ready for such an event? Have you taken seriously your

decision to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? Has that decision

moved you to live a life of stewardship where all you have and

are belongs to God? Or have you put all of that off to some-

where down the road? Chances are you will be reading next

week's reflection and nothing too earth changing will have hap-

pened. But then, maybe, just maybe, this time is when we all

lose that bet

La corresponsabilidad diaria

De lo que yo sepa, esta reflexión de "La corresponsabilidad di-

aria" puede ser la última que usted lea. Y esto no es porque yo

temo que usted ya no le tenga interés a estas lecturas. Bueno,

¡espero que no! Es porque quizás Jesús para ese entonces

pueda regresar de nuevo. No habrá necesidad de reflexiones

como éstas. Quizás crea usted que no hay una posibilidad de

que esto pase en los días siguientes. Puedo apostar de vez en

cuando pero no es algo que yo diría que no pasará por seguro.

¿Sí cree usted que regresará Jesús de nuevo?

Todos hemos dejado una tarea o trabajo para el siguiente día. A

veces nunca llega el mañana. Actuamos como si tuviéramos

todo el tiempo del mundo. Pero hay algo por seguro de este

tiempo: no existe en cantidad ilimitada. La muerte es la manera

principal en la que se acaba el tiempo terrenal. Sin embargo

habrá un tiempo en el que Jesús regrese y si usted y yo esta-

mos viviendo, espero que nos encuentre listos.

¿Usted está listo para eso? ¿Ha tomado en serio su decisión de

ser discípulo de Jesucristo? ¿Su decisión lo ha movido a una

vida de corresponsabilidad en la que todo lo que tiene y todo lo

que es le pertenece a Dios? O, ¿ha pospuesto eso para

después? Lo más probable es que sí esté leyendo las reflex-

iones de la próxima semana y nada tan grandioso pase. Pero

quizás, solo quizás, esta vez es cuando perdemos la apuesta.

PREPARANDO EL DIA DE

ACCION DE GRACIAS

¿Por qué se celebra el Día de Acción de Gracias en

Estados Unidos?

En Estados Unidos se celebra Thanksgiving o Acción de

Gracias el cuarto jueves de noviembre.

La tradición en Estados Unidos surgió en 1621 cuando un

grupo de colonos de Plymouth, actual Estado de Massa-

chussetts, compartieron una comida con los indios wam-

panoag para celebrar la cosecha del otoño y agradecerles

que les hubieran enseñado técnicas de cultivo y caza.

Los indios llevaron carne de ciervo para ser asada y pavos,

mientras que los colonos habían aprendido cómo cocinar

los arándanos y prepararon las diferentes clases de grano

sobre vajillas desconocidas para los indígenas.

Este primer día de Acción de Gracias de la historia duró tres

días, y sería uno de los pocos ejemplos de armonía entre los

colonos europeos y los nativos americanos.

Sin embargo, no fue hasta 1863, en medio de la Guerra Ci-

vil, cuando el presidente Abraham Lincoln proclamó Acción

de Gracias como un día festivo a nivel nacional, el cual se

celebraría el último jueves de noviembre.

La fiesta se estableció de manera oficial por el Congreso

hasta 1941, año en el que el presidente Franklin D. Roose-

velt, proclama como festivo el día de Acción de Gracias.

Además de las razones históricas, los cristianos católicos

tenemos otras motivaciones para ser agradecidos. Dios nos

ha dado tanto, por lo cual debemos ser siempre agradeci-

dos.

The main goal of the V Encuentro is to discern ways in which the Church in the United States can better respond to the Hispanic/Latino presence, and to strengthen the ways in which Hispanics/Latinos respond to the call to the New Evangelization as missionary disciples serving the entire Church.

The process designed to achieve this goal is rooted in the life of the local Church as Catholic parishes, schools, institutions, organizations, service agencies, and the like gather to enter a process of consultation, sending forth community participants to engage local Hispanics/Latinos, especially those living in the periph-eries. The consultation process includes dialogue, reflection, journaling, and consultation forms, and each local team must consider how this information best serves the pastoral planning efforts of the community. Based on the findings, each team is tasked with creating a Work-ing Document to be presented at the Parish Encuentro, to be submitted later to the arch/diocesan team after incorporating feedback from the parish event. In our parish we are having the sixth reflection ses-sion on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm, at the Culleton Hall.

La meta principal del V Encuentro es la de discernir maneras en que la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos pueda responder mejor a la presen-cia hispana/latina y fortalecer maneras en que los hispanos/latinos responden al llamado

de la Nueva Evangelización como discípulos misioneros sirviendo a toda la Iglesia.

El proceso diseñado para lograr estas metas está enraizado en la vida de la iglesia local, donde las parroquias, escuelas, instituciones, organizaciones, y agencias de servicio católi-cas se integran al proceso de consulta, enviando represen-tantes desde la comunidad a entablar un diálogo con hispa-nos/latinos de la localidad, especialmente aquellos que vi-ven en las periferias. El proceso de consulta abarca diálogo, reflexión, un diario y formularios de consulta. Cada equipo local debe considerar cómo esta información puede ser útil para los esfuerzos de planeación pastoral en su comunidad. Basado en los resul-tados, cada equipo tendrá la tarea de crear un Documento de Trabajo para presentar en el Encuentro Parroquial, y que posteriormente será enviado al equipo arqui/diocesano des-pués de incorporar la retroalimentación del evento parro-quial. En nuestra parroquia se están llevando a cabo las 6 se-siones de reflexión los miércoles a las 7:00 pm en Culle-ton Hall.

PREPARING THANKSGIVING DAY Why is Thanksgiving celebrated in the United States? In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. The tradition in the United States emerged in 1621 when a group of settlers from Plymouth, present-day Massachusetts, shared a meal with the Wampanoag Indians to celebrate the autumn harvest, and to thank them for teaching them cultivation and hunting techniques. The Indians brought deer meat to be roasted and turkeys, while the colonists had learned how to cook the blueberries and prepared different kinds of grains, on tableware unknown to the natives. This first Thanksgiving day of history lasted three days, and would be one of the few exam-ples of harmony between European settlers and Native Americans. However, it was not until 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, when President Abraham Lin-coln proclaimed Thanksgiving as a national holiday, which would be celebrated on the last Thursday of November. The holiday was not officially established by Congress until 1941, the year in which President Franklin D. Roosevelt pro-claimed the holiday as the day of Thanksgiving. In addition to the historical reasons, Catholic Christians have other motivations to be grateful. God has given us so much, for which we must always be grateful.
