Healing Masses

Tuesday, January 16, 6:30pm

and Friday, January 19, 12pm

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be available during

this Mass for every baptized Catholic over the age of reason. Prayer

teams will also be available immediately after Mass to pray with

people for healing and other needs.

Anointing of the sick primarily is for spiritual healing. Physical healing might occur, but

it is not the main purpose of the sacrament. Certainly the sacrament should not be ex-

pected to automatically cure the sick person. Such an expectation tends toward supersti-

tion (cf. CC2111). Baptized children below the age of reason cannot commit personal sin

and so do not need anointing of the sick if they are in danger of death. Rather, when in

danger of death, such children can be given confirmation, for spiritual strengthening and

more fully to initiate them into the Christian religion.

Since childhood the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord has been one

of my favorite celebrations of the Christmas Season. The idea of

the wise men following a star to unknown places captured my im-

agination then. And it still does. The story of the Magi presents

Jesus as the Messiah of the Gentiles (us) and to all the people of the

world. When I was a child, it was an adventure story. There were

good guys, the Magi, on an amazing quest, following a star to the

far reaches of the earth. There was a really bad guy, Herod who

wanted to kill the baby Jesus. And in the end, the good guys won.

They found the baby Jesus, gave him wonderful presents, tricked

Herod and then they returned home safely. This is a good story!

Looking at this story with adult eyes still excites my imagination.

The idea of following a star across the world is a very romantic

notion. Almost everyone has a star they want to follow. For some

people that star might be the allure of wealth or power. For other

people the star might be fame or the thrill of adventure. Still others

seek love and will travel to the ends of the earth to find it. But this

story isn’t about seeking love or self-fulfillment or achieving our

dreams. The story of the Magi is about a journey of faith. These

pagan astrologers represent all the people in the entire world includ-

ing us. And so, this story is about us finding spiritual meaning in

our lives. It is about our search for Jesus.

Like the Magi, we have to put aside our preoccupations and fixa-

tions. We have to drop everything to follow the new star, the Light

of Christ. There is adventure in seeking and then following Jesus.

We don’t know where He will lead us in our journey of faith. For

me following the star, the Light of Christ, lead me to Peachtree

City, Georgia. The journey here was not easy but I know that this

is where God wants me right now. I don’t know where the Light of

Christ will lead you. My prayer is that each one of you will seek

the only star worth following and let it guide your journey to the

Lord.

Father, we your people rise up in splendor,

for your light has come;

your glory now shines upon us.

We are grateful for this light,

who is Jesus Christ, your Son.

Make our lives radiant

with that same brightness

and help us walk as one in your light.

Open our eyes that we may recognize you

in all the signs you send us.

All glory be to you, FATHER,

through your SON Jesus Christ,

who draws all people to himself

that together with the SPIRIT

we might give you praise,

forever and ever.

AMEN

Retrouvaille is a Three-Phase Program

Phase 1: The Retrouvaille Weekend Experience

Retrouvaille begins with a weekend experience in which couples

are helped to reestablish communication and to gain new insights

into themselves as individuals and as a couple. Weekends are typi-

cally held at eithr a local hotel or a retreat facility. This part of the

program is presented by three couples and a priest. The presenting

team has experienced disillusionment, pain, and conflict in their

own lives and offer hope as they share their personal struggles of

reconciliation and healing.

Couples will find courage and strength in the realization that they

are not alone in their struggle. They will not be asked to share their

problems with anyone else. However, they will be encouraged to

put the past behind them and to look beyond the hurt and pain, in

order to rediscover each other in a new and positive way. The

Retrouvaille Weekend provides tools to help them with communi-

cation, forgiveness, and trust. It teaches a dialogue process of

meaningful communication on a feeling level.

Phase 2: The Post Weekend Sessions

A series of follow-up presentations is

the next important phase of the

Retrouvaille healing process. The hurt

and pain of a struggling marriage can-

not be healed in a single weekend ex-

perience, though it is a positive start.

The Post sessions include a series of 2-

hour talks by additional couples that expand on the Weekend con-

cepts. Each Retrouvaille community establishes the Post schedule,

over either a 6- or 12-week period. Most couples, without a doubt,

find this to be one of the most productive components of the pro-

gram and where the most growth in the marriage occurs.

Phase 3: Monthly Support (CORE)

The final phase is a monthly small-group support meeting called

CORE (Continuing Our Retrouvaille Experience). It allows for a

casual and supportive interaction with other couples who have

attended the Retrouvaille program. This monthly meeting contin-

ues to reinforce the communication tools learned on the weekend

and it is a positive and welcoming space that allows couples to

form strong and lasting bonds as they continue to heal their mar-

riages.

Sitting With God: Touching the Real Divine

January 19 – 21, 2018

Women understand the importance of touching, seeing, hearing and

tasting in order to make things real. God knows our yearnings to

experience him physically. How do we do that with God? The an-

swer lies in the metaphors for the Divine. These metaphors contin-

ue to remind us of God’s presence, protection and grace. Through

Scripture, storytelling, reflection, discussion and group experience

come to embrace our Lord more fully.

Presenters: Janet Jansen is the mother of four grown children and

Today we celebrate the Epiphany.

This Feast commemorates the

manifestation of Christ to the

gentiles, that Jesus came not only as

the Messiah to the Jewish people but

as the Savior of the whole world.

Our RCIA classes in the New Year will center on the Seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church

“The seven sacraments touch all the stages and all the important moments of Christian life: they give birth and

increase, healing and mission to the Christian’s life of faith. There is thus a certain resemblance between the stages of

natural life and the stages of the spiritual life.“

Welcome to True Reformers: Saints of the Catholic Reformation, a study crafted to teach about those who led the Church’s rebirth from the ashes of confusion caused by the Protestant Reformation. In these six sessions, participants will learn about the true benefactors of the human race: the saints. The saints of the Catholic Reformation show us just how powerful—and beautiful—is the human heart’s free response to God’s generous grace.
