Profession of Faith: Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begot-ten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with

the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation, he came down from

heaven, (all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incar-nate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For

our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on

the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right

hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the proph-ets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic

Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of

the dead and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

A CHRISTMAS REPRISE. The Church’s celebration three weeks ago of the Baptism of the Lord signaled the “official” end of the Christmas season. Today’s feast of the Presentation of the Lord seems to extend the Incarnation celebration a bit longer. In fact, some have called this feast a

“second Epiphany.” The first reading recalls the anticipation of Advent, as Malachi writes, “Lo, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me.” The reading from Hebrews reminds us of the Incarnation, proclaiming that Jesus had a “share” in our own “blood and flesh.” The Gospel finds the infant Jesus on his first visit to Jerusalem and his human parents once again surprised and in awe over the events surround his birth. In the simplicity of the manger, in the grandeur of the temple, in the domesticity of Nazareth, Jesus comes. May we come to know him and so be filled with “wisdom” and the “favor of God.”

Our heartfelt sympathy goes to the Calderone Family ~ Scott & Jill, Dana & Ross on the recent passing of W. Benjamin Britton, Jill Calderone’s father in North Carolina. Our thoughts and

prayers are with the family and their loved ones.

This week we continue to explore various charism definitions.

Knowledge  ~  to exercise the gift of knowledge, one enjoys learning, probably from childhood and onto into adulthood. This gift may include knowledge of facts and relationships, of scripture and of the tradition

of the church, and knowledge of the ways of sharing this learning gracefully.

• Has a lifetime of diligent study and intellectual study • Ideas are fascinating, living realities key to discipleship • Also learn through relationships and life experiences • Often paired with teaching, writing and encouragement

Mercy ~ The Holy Spirit provides individuals with exceptional empathy and compassion for those who are weak or suffering so that they can devote large amounts of time and energy to alleviate these conditions. To exercise the gift of mercy is to relate to others in kindness and compassion. This gift involves a continual readiness to forgive those who have erred, comfort those bereaved, help those who face a crisis, minister to the sick, become a peacemaker, or offer assistance to those in need.

• Express their love of Christ through their love of the poor and needy

• Use practical deeds of compassion to relieve distress in others • Deeply sensitive to the needs of the marginalized and oppressed • Find working with the needy to be fulfilling and compelling Mission ~ To exercise the gift of mission is to faithfully and mutually share what one has learned about God. This gift involves a willingness to be with and share with people of different heritage, customs, economic background, experience, or manner of speaking, as much as a willingness to listen as to speak and an awareness that God loves all people.

• Enters hearts and minds of those from another culture easily • Routinely welcomed where others are not • Moves lightly across barriers that others find insurmountable Musicianship ~ The Holy Spirit enables some to praise God through various forms of music and enhance the worship experience of the parish community. To exercise the gift of music may involve some skill in singing or playing an instrument, but may also include the ability to select appropriate music for a worship service or parish event or program.

• Extreme joy and passion when writing or performing music • Does not need to be religious to reflect the beauty of God • Powerful expression of one’s faith

Lighthouse Catholic Ministry The New Manna

Biblical Jews adhered to the Leviticus (17:11) prohibition against the drinking of blood. Yet in 1Corinthians (10:16), Paul casually states “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?”

How is it that the first Jewish Christians so quickly came to believe in the real presence of the Eucharist? Dr. Brant Pitre uses the Hebrew Scriptures and Jewish tradition to frame the actions of Jesus at the Last Supper, and to provide a fresh look at the heart of Catholic practice — the Eucharist. By taking us back to the Jewish roots of our faith, Dr. Pitre gives us a powerful lens through which to see anew the bread of the presence, the manna, the Last Supper, and ultimately the meaning of the Eucharist.

Is anyone among you sick? They should summon the presbyters of the church, to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person and the Lord will

raise them up. If they have committed any sins, they will be forgiven." (James 5:14)

In the sacrament we pray that the sick be healed in body, in mind and in spirit. The mission of the Church is to do what Jesus did. Healing was essential to the mission of the disciples. If you are experiencing the effects of illness, advanced age, preparing for surgery and seek the healing power of the sacrament you are encouraged to ask Father Dennis to celebrate the Anointing of the Sick with you. You or a family member can contact the parish office at (803) 345-3962 or call Father’s cell phone at (843) 834-5447.
