Profession of Faith: Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of
heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, (all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin
Mary, and became man. For our sake he was cruci-fied under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was
buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come
again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Fa-ther and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is
adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tres-passes, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
People: For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for-ever.
POST-SUMMER CHALLENGES. With any luck, summer delights will continue a while past last weekend’s Labor Day: refreshing recreation (with maybe an occasional swim) or enjoyable relaxation on the deck (with tasty outdoor grilling). Truth is, for some of us, this year’s Labor Day came way too early. With many schools back in session for a while already,
mealtimes and driving schedules needed readjustment to coordinate youth sports with adult commitments. Some religious education and parish programs resumed, too. No surprise, then, that this weekend’s scriptures sound a little like post-summer challenges. For instance, Wisdom reminds us that believers in God can never be content with “timid deliberations” and “unsure plans.” Paul challenges longtime friend and follower Philemon to “let the good you do be voluntary.” Jesus instructs “great crowds” traveling with him—including us—on three things necessary for all true disciples to accomplish. On this early autumn weekend, our scriptures describe disciples’ lifelong labors.

What is a charism or spiritual gift? How do charisms differ from natural talents? “Charism” is the Greek word used in the New Testament for “favor” or “gratuitous gift”. Charisms, or spiritual gifts, are special abilities given to Christians by the Holy Spirit to enable them to be powerful channels of God’s love and redeeming presence in the world. Charisms are to be used in charity or service to build up the Church. Charisms differ from natural talents in two ways. Charisms are not “in-born” or inherited from our parents. They are given to us by the Holy Spirit and are supernaturally empowered. They are focused outward. As disciples, we offer our entire selves, including our personalities, natural talents, education, experience and background to God for His purposes. All baptized Christians are given charisms. Some spiritual gifts are given one time for a special purpose, and others are given on a long term, even permanent basis. For instance, a Christian without a gift of healing may be used by God to heal in a particular situation. But all Christians have at least one long-term or permanent spiritual gift, which God intends for us to use over and over. Perhaps you are wondering what your charism is. How can you determine what gift or gifts you have received from God? There is a process to determine your charisms. Most Catholics don’t know about their spiritual gifts because they have not been taught to discern and develop them and therefore do not have an action plan to serve the Lord. The diocese of Charleston has challenged parishes to begin a discernment process with its parishioners. Later this fall, Our Lady of the Lake plans to hold a seminar to help parishioners discern their charisms. The Stewardship Council has a little more research to do before finalizing the details, but in the next month, we should have a plan. Keep watching this space for more news! TREASURE!! Think of all those blankets, sleeping bags and comforters that have been taking up space in your closets and attics. Soon, it is going to be cold, and the homeless will be seeking out the Catholic Charities of the Midlands office in downtown Columbia for blankets, coats, gloves, scarves and other items to keep them warm this winter. Have a look at your “treasures” and see how you might be able to help. Donations can be placed in the pull out drawer, right hand side marked ‘Catholic Charities’ in Vollkommer Tower. Volunteers will transport your gifts to the downtown office.

How can we witness to others in a way to get them to Mass? It’s all about the Eucharist. In this informative and dynamic presentation, Dr. Scott Hahn discusses why the New Evangelization is the greatest priority of the Church at this time, and how we are all called to share our faith. He
shows how the Eucharist relates to explaining Jesus' death and resurrection, and how Blessed John Paul II's called for a New Evangelization must be based on the Eucharist.

Our Lady of Grace Rosary Group This “traveling Rosary” is back! It has been on hiatus for a number of months but the members are bringing it back by popular demand. As long as there is interest in praying the Rosary together at the different homes, the parishioners/members of this Ministry will host the Rosary on WEDNESDAY EVENINGS at 6:30 pm. Contact
Dona Silverman, OLOG Rosary Coordinator, with any questions about the Ministry or if you would be willing to host Our Lady of Grace Rosary. "Is anyone among you sick? They should summon the presbyters of the church, to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person and the
Lord will raise them up. If they have committed any sins, they will be forgiven." (James 5:14)
In the sacrament we pray that the sick be healed in body, in mind and in spirit. The mission of the Church is to do what Jesus did. Healing was essential to the mission of the disciples. If you are experiencing the effects of illness, advanced age, preparing for surgery and seek the healing power of the sacrament you are encouraged to ask Father Dennis to celebrate the Anointing of the Sick with you. You or a family member can contact the parish office at 803.345.3962 or call Father’s cell phone at 843.834.5447.
