Luke 17:15
Psalm 298

The readings today speak of heal-ing and salva on. In Second Kings, Naaman, a commander of the ar-my of the king of Syria, develops leprosy. He goes to a stranger, a prophet from Israel, when no one else can cure his disease. Much to
his surprise, a er a simple bath in the river, he is cured. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus cures ten lepers and sends them to the priest. Only one, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus for his cure and only he hears the words, “Your faith has saved you.” The psalm and Timothy remind us that salva on involves jus-
ce, kindness, and faithfulness and forever links us with Jesus. In a world as broken as ours, both heal-ing and salva on are necessary.
It is the Samaritan, a foreigner, who alone returns to glorify God and thank this man who healed him. It is Naaman, a foreigner, who seeks out Elisha, the man of God, to be healed. How is it that only for-eigners recognize the hand of God in their healing and respond appropriately? Could it be that be-cause they are foreigners, they are more open to the unexpected and more apprecia ve that they were included? Naaman was reluctant to wash in the Jordan, believing the rivers of his na ve land would be be er. The Samaritan must have been reluctant to show himself to the Jewish priests. Do we realize that we ourselves are foreigners, are lepers, sinners saved by a God who reaches across boundaries?
Taking a step back, we realize that this foreigner in the Gospel was mixed in with nine na ve people. It is ironic that because all lepers were considered unclean, the common barrier between Jews and Gen les had broken down. If none of them had this skin disease, the Samaritan would have been ex-cluded from the group. But because all were unclean, the nine others did not exclude the “unclean” foreigner.
The last essen al step in these healing stories is the expression of thanks. Even if we have never needed to be healed like a leper or welcomed like a foreigner, we have all received many bless-ings from God. First and foremost, Jesus suffered and died for us, opening the way to eternal life. When we receive the Lord in the Eucharist, we are giving thanks for his presence here to-day, as the word eucharist literally means thanksgiving.
As we gather to celebrate the Eucharist, let us not forget that the word “eucharist” means “thanksgiving.” The Greek word eukharis a is used to describe what Jesus did before sharing his
body and blood at the Last Supper. Today, as always, we give thanks to God for all the blessings we have received and con nue to receive, espe-cially for Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, whom we receive in a special way today in the Eucharist.

glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is the light." -Revelation 21:23 Is lit for the eternal rest of
