— Psalm 121:1 2
— Salmo 121 (120):1 2
How do we pray? Do we only pray once a week when we come to Mass? Maybe once in a while when something important comes up? Or do we pray regularly and purposefully? Do we try to listen to what God is telling us? Do we find prayer helpful? Today as we celebrate Mass, let us think about how Jesus asks us to pray and pray that we may more closely follow his exam-ple. We tend to think of prayer as an individual, personal phenomenon. But the first reading suggests that prayer can be communal. Moses did not go alone to the top of the hill to raise his arms in supplication to God. He was accompanied by two friends, Aaron and Hur, who eventually sup-ported his arms when Moses tired. All three together lifted their arms to God. In the Gospel Je-sus tells his disciples, “Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night?” (Luke 18:7). In the light of the parable of the dishonest judge, this sug-gests that if several people persist in asking for the same thing, God will see that justice is done.
“Keep in touch!” we call out when saying goodbye to a friend w e only see occasionally. Jesus, knowing that the day would come when he would be separated from his disciples, could not do the same. Throughout his life, Jesus continually prayed to his Father. This was the way that he was able to keep in touch. Moreover, he was providing a mod-el to his disciples. Through constant and persistent prayer, his disciples could continue to keep in touch. Today’s readings are about persistence, passionate persistence. Exodus tells of a battle won despite weariness because Moses, with help from Aaron and Hur, held his hands raised. Timothy asks that same persistence of his community and us. Luke tells of a court case won by a widow, despite the dishonesty of the judge, because she will not leave him alone. The psalm reminds us that God is everywhere, guarding us from harm day and night, coming and going, now and for-ever. The readings are about persistence, the relentless, unwavering pursuit of what must not be lost. The readings are about God’s passionate persistence in pursuing us, seek-ing to win our hearts.
“Be persistent,” Paul charges Timothy in proclaiming God’s word, “whether it is convenient or inconvenient” (2 Timothy 4:2). It is not always an easy task, even when it is convenient, but when it is inconvenient it becomes quite a challenge. Yet it is our mission, as disciples, to proclaim God’s word, especially when it is inconvenient. Today, on World Mission Sunday, let us commit ourselves to per-sist in proclaiming God’s word even when it is difficult.
