ALLELUIA! CHRIST IS RISEN!THE LORD IS RISEN INDEED! ALLELUIA!

Your prayer and presence and praise brought Easter glory to the Cathedral of St. Philip last Sunday. Thank you! Maybe it was your sheer wondrous energy that kept most of the rain away all morning. Thank you!

Thank you for whatever way you participated in Easter Day at the Cathedral – and there were thousands of ways. Maybe you were rehearsing music all week and all day Saturday. Maybe you were organizing and arranging flowers all week and all day Saturday. Maybe you were writing and delivering sermons all week and all morning Sunday! Maybe you were organizing Boy Scouts or lectors or priests or vergers or acolytes or sound systems or cameras or buildings or climate control systems or fires or dogwood blossoms and baptismal water! Maybe you simply took the time to show up on Sunday. Maybe you don’t usually come to church at all, but you came this year on Easter Sunday. Thank you. Thanks to all of you!

It takes a church.

It takes a church, an entire church, to celebrate Easter. It’s not just one person, or one hymn. It’s not just one sermon or one phrase. It’s not just one child, or one Easter egg. It takes a community of faith. It takes a church.

As you know, here at the Cathedral of St. Philip, we call that community of faith a special word. The word is “koinonia,” which means something like “spiritual community.” I am thrilled to be part of the Cathedral’s “koinonia,” our “spiritual community.” God has blessed us with something amazing at the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip: the ability to celebrate joyously the resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord. We have been blessed with the capacity to bring Easter into the world!

You know what? Easter is still going on! The official season of Easter lasts 50 days, not just one. I look forward to continuing to celebrate resurrection with you!

(“There is always a way out. The tomb is not the end! The tomb is a tunnel! There is always a way out, a way through the darkness and rock.” Those words are from my Easter Day sermon, titled “The Tomb Is A Tunnel.” You can find it online, and in printed form in the various kiosks around the Cathedral.)

(Further, I urge you to review the Cathedral Easter letter of last week, in which I hoped that our wider church does not fix the date of Easter on the same day each year! “…The tradition of a moveable date for Easter is important to our spiritual lives. The fact that Easter arrives on a different Sunday every year reminds us that God lives beyond our earthly calendars, beyond our earthly ways of telling time. If we are going to celebrate Easter, we are going to have to intentionally work on it. It is not going to simply occur, like any other calendar day.” You can find that letter online, too, and in the various Cathedral building kiosks.)

In short, Easter can happen any time! I pray that Easter occurred for you last Sunday, and I pray it blossoms again and again for you throughout this year!

Children’s Chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church. Children three years through third grade begin in church with their parents, follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the Sequence Hymn, then rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m. Parents who would like their children two years old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace.

St. Anne’s Guild extends a huge thank you to the Cathedral’s members, staff and volunteers who supported the semi-annual Buckhead Christian Ministries (BCM) food drive this February. Food drives provide 60% of the food BCM offers to those in need within our community and BCM purchases the other 40% with donated money. Your generous gifts allowed our church to provide 144 bags of groceries and write a check for $7,159.48 to BCM.

Kudos go to Mary Hunter Rouse, Maggie Paul, and Casey Jones who kicked off our food drive with the “Souper Bowl” Sunday youth collection; to the choir who had a special collection among its members; and to Sara Chapman who set up a food “store” for children to shop, then donate their food “purchases.”

MEET A MEMBER: MARION HOPKINS

Marion Hopkins has been a member of the Cathedral since 1998. Christie Jennison, program coordinator for membership and stewardship, recently sat down with Marion to talk about her experiences at the Cathedral.

“I’m a descendant of William Porcher DuBose, who helped found the School of Theology at Sewanee, so the Episcopal faith runs deep in our blood. I grew up in Columbia, South Carolina attending St. John’s Episcopal Church. I was in their choir from second grade until my family moved to eastern North Carolina when I was high school. I earned a degree in physics from East Carolina University, and then went to Clemson University for graduate school where I met my husband Mike. After we graduated, I followed

him to Atlanta—his parents were living here at the time. I found a job at the Environmental Protection Agency and have been there ever since.”

How did you get to the Cathedral? “We bought a house just up the street from the church, and when we were looking around and thinking about preschools, we found the Cathedral. We knew that we wanted to be members of the church where our girls were going to school, so we started coming here around that time.”

What activities are you involved in? “I joined the Cathedral Choir about six years ago after seeing how much my oldest daughter enjoyed Choristers and being reminded of my musical days when I was younger. I still sing with the Choristers every now and then and I really enjoy that, especially since my youngest daughter is still a member. Now I’m the president of the choir. Being on the Friends of Cathedral Music board, I’m involved with the concerts and big events. The Friends board tries to make Dale Adelmann and Patrick Scott’s lives a bit easier during these busy times, seeing as how they’re already doing so much. It’s a team effort. Dale always

stresses that we should handle problems with grace, excellence, and hospitality, and I think people really notice this about the Cathedral in general. I think our hospitality to newcomers and visitors for the concerts is appreciated. The trips we’ve taken have provided great experiences as well. My sister was a staff singer at Trinity Cathedral in Columbia, South Carolina, and she traveled to England numerous times with her choir. She always raved about it, but I never had the desire to travel. But in 2013 when the choir had the opportunity to go to England, I decided to go and it was just incredible. I had goosebumps singing in those churches – it was just amazing.”

On the Cathedral: “Right when we joined the Cathedral, my husband was asked to be an usher, and he’s been an usher ever since. Early on, he was the reason we came to church so much, since he had to be here pretty regularly. That kept us coming back, and it didn’t take long for us to get hooked. That’s something I love about the Cathedral – people are very intentional about trying to engage and welcome newcomers. It’s a good place. I don’t know what I’ll do if we ever move post-retirement!”

Calling all new families! Join us for a kid-friendly dinner in Child Hall on Sunday, April 17, from 5:30-7 p.m. Canon Mary Hunter Rouse will highlight the Parish Retreat to Kanuga, Week of Wonder, and other summer opportunities. Whether you’re a new member or a long-time member, this will be a great way to learn more about opportunities for children at the Cathedral. Please RSVP to Christie Jennison, [email protected] or 404-365-1079.

NEWCOMER DINNERDETERGENT DRIVE FOR CITY OF REFUGESt. Clare’s Guild is collecting laundry detergent pods for the women and families at City of Refuge during April. Next time you’re at the store, pick up a bag of pods to drop off at the Cathedral's information desk. Our donation will help City of Refuge defer some of their basic housing costs for the families. Thank you!

CO-LISTENING

“Co-listening” is a simple but potentially powerful practice where two people take turns listening to each other. Its simplicity tempts us to minimize the benefits, however. So this spring, I’m resuming co-listening classes at the Cathedral. All interested persons are invited to attend one or more of the sample introductory classes offered through April 20 and instructed by yours truly. These “Introduction to Co-Listening” classes will teach and enhance peer coaching skills that make it possible to maximize one’s personal growth and interpersonal goals as fully as one chooses. Remarkable results can be achieved by people across all age groups and multiple

backgrounds who learn to listen effectively.

Introductory classes for Wednesday evenings, March 30–April 20 from 6–8 p.m. are offered free of cost. Then will follow a

final opportunity on Wednesday, April 27, from 6-8:30 p.m., to consider and possibly be invited to join the series that runs through July 27. The April 27 class will also commence a sliding-scale cost affordable for any budget. All classes meet in Room 133. For more information on “co-listening,” visit www.rc.org. RSVP to Thee Smith, 404-727-0636 or [email protected].
