Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception September 15, 2019

.

Bishop Glen John Provost’s Homily Dedication of Immaculate Conception Cathedral Saturday, August 31, 2019 “I have truly built you a princely house and dwelling, where you may abide forever.” II Chronicles 6:2 Did Father Hubert Cramers call to mind that verse from Sec-ond Chronicles when he first stepped foot into his new church? I would like to think he did. Solomon observes the priests transporting the Ark of the Covenant into the new tem-ple with great ceremony and rejoices that God now lives with His People. The sacred place is filled with the sound of trumpets and a cloud of incense. The Lord’s glory indeed consumes the house of God (II Chronicles 5:14). The Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that we do not ap-proach in fear a “blazing fire and gloomy darkness” (Hebrews 12:18). Rather we draw near to “the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem” (Hebrews 12:22). Above our heads “countless angels in festal gathering” spread their wings and fly about (Hebrews 12:22), much as they do on the ceiling of this Cathedral apse. Here, in this house of God, “the judge of all” presides, “the spirits of the just made perfect” find a home, and “Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant” abides (Hebrews 12:23-24). What was established in the earthly Jerusalem we see here and now in this artistic creation of the new Holy City. While removing the acoustical tiles, which had covered the walls of this church for longer than anyone could remember, the workers discovered a treasure. There, under crumbling residue and stubborn adhesives, lay an inscription. Unlike the writing on the wall of Belshazzar’s palace, words appeared that needed no Daniel to identify (cf. Daniel 5). Nor did these words constitute a warning. Rather, they revealed a Catholic prayer, dating perhaps to the Fourth Century, proclaiming Mary’s sinless purity. Inspired by verses from the Book of Judith (15:10) and the Song of Songs (4:7), Tota pulchra es, “You are all beautiful,” had been on the lips of Catholics for centuries and lay hidden, awaiting discovery once again by worshippers at the church on the corner of Kirby and Bilbo. You are all beautiful, Mary.” You bore the Son of God. As we anoint the altar and walls, the antiphon will proclaim, “Behold God’s dwelling with the human race. He will live with them and they will be his people, and God himself with them will be their God” (Antiphon for the anointing of altar and walls from the ritual for the Dedication of a Church). God dwells with us through Jesus Christ. How is this possible? We look to Mary. “And the Word became flesh” (John 1:14), Mary’s flesh. “You are the glory of Jerusalem, you are the joy of Is-rael, you are the honor of our people, you are the advocate of sinners.” This church is a living expression, in art and symbol, of a sac-ramental reality. When the crowds challenged Jesus about raising up the temple in three days (John 2:19), St. John tells us, “he was speaking about the temple of his body” (John 2:21). Everything in the Church is about the Body. Everything in this Catholic Church has Mary pointing to the Body of her Son. The nave thrusts us forward. We pass windows de-

picting God’s preparation for the Incarnation from the creation of Adam and Eve to Mary’s own life. Everything is a preface, including Mary’s Immaculate Conception. And finally we reach the historic sanctuary—the tabernacle, the Holy of Ho-lies, standing sentinel over the altar of Sacrifice. Here God dwells with His People. Here the Eucharist is present. Here the Eucharist is celebrated. “My house shall be called a house of prayer,” says the Lord (Communion Antiphon for the Mass of Dedication). All that we do here is about prayer. When all is said and done, the planning and toil, the work and completion, are about our communion with God. So, the Tota pulchra es concludes: “O Mary, virgin most wise, Mother most clement, pray for us, intercede for us with our Lord Jesus Christ.” Temple, house, presence, prayer—these are the words that come to mind when we dedicate a church. Father Cramers and the people of Lake Charles were like Zacchaeus. They climbed a mighty sycamore to catch a glimpse of the Lord. Then, the unexpected hap-pened. The Lord stopped. He called them down and invited Himself in. They welcomed Christ into their new home while admitting their unworthiness. They made their dwelling His own. They wanted Christ present in their midst. And thus it was that salvation came to their house (Luke 19:9). We talk a great deal today about multiculturalism and con-gratulate ourselves for being so progressive. However, diver-sity is not an original thought. Look at this church. Make note of the names on the windows—Anglo, Irish, French, Ital-ian and German names. They decorate a church designed by New Orleans architects of French extraction in an Italian style, decorated with marble from quarries known to Michelangelo, with Stations of the Cross from Czechoslovakia, illustrated with windows by German craftsmen, built by local workers, both white and African-American, repaired and restored mostly by Central Americans. That is multiculturalism. And what is the center that holds it all together? The Catholic faith, whether they realized it or not, whether lukewarm or zealous, whether enfolded or not by its embrace. All of this was made possible because a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph said “yes.” All the brick and mortar, wood and marble, stained glass, plaster and terra cotta, fell into its pre-destined place because someone believed. They had faith. All has devolved to its climax in the present restoration because God wanted to maintain His dwelling among us. There is nothing accidental here, nothing superficial. It is all quite intentional and essential. Mary, take our offering. Accompany it to the Father. In glori-fying you, we honor the Incarnate Word. Let this church be a fragrant gift, returning to God, from all that He has given us, a humble token of our praise and thanksgiving. May this House of God shelter the sinner, inspire the worship-per, encourage the weak, and point us to your Son. For “You are the glory of Jerusalem, you are the joy of Israel, you are the honor of our people, you are the advocate of sinners,” who intercedes for us as we ask all this through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord. Amen.

Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

SESQUICENTENNIAL 1869—2019 As part of our sesquicentennial celebration we will be highlighting interesting facts in each bulletin about our history, titled:

DID YOU KNOW???? Part 37

FIRST NATIVE-BORN PASTOR AT IC

Father Louis Holden Boudreaux stepped into our lives on February 23, 1940 to begin the longest stewardship of any pastor to date. This gentle man viewed himself as neither rare nor outstanding; in truth, he was both. He was born in Morse, Louisiana on January 30, 1908. He would become the first native-born pastor at Immaculate Conception—all pastors up until this point were European missionaries. As a youngster, he was considered something of a child prod-igy. His education began so early he was not really able to recall when it had started. Ever on an accelerated course, he received his Doctorate in Sacred Theology on June 28, 1930, at age 22. Bishop Jules Jeanmard interceded for him and obtained special dispensation to allow his ordination 18 months before the required age of 24. He was probably the youngest priest in the world at that time. His first as-signment was as Assistant Pastor to the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Lafayette, for a period of five years, and then was named Chancellor of the Diocese of Lafay-ette on September 12, 1935, where he remained until he was named Pastor of Immaculate Conception. The pastor-ate of Father Boudreaux at Immaculate Conception was a vigorous one. While ably attending to the spiritual needs of his flock, he set about completing the work that Monsignor Vigliero had started: the completion of church decoration, installation of permanent confessionals and application of a new roof. Thanks to termite infestation in the flooring, that too, had to be ripped out and replaced. The new terrazzo flooring was laid in 1944. When materials became avail-able for civilian use, air conditioning was installed in the church, the first Catholic church in the state to be so equipped. In summers previous, hand fans were provided in the pews with “Burke Funeral Home” printed on them.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), we will present questions taken from the Compendium, a faithful and sure synthesis of the Catechism in clear and concise format. Why is faith a personal act, and at the same time eccle-sial? “I be Faith is a personal act insofar as it is the free response of the human person to God who reveals himself. But at the same time it is an ecclesial act which expresses itself in the proclamation, “We believe”. It is in fact the Church that be-lieves: and thus by the grace of the Holy Spirit precedes, engenders and nourishes the faith of each Christian. For this reason the Church is Mother and Teacher. What a Blessing! The next topic for the Wednesday Theological Discussion by Deacon Sam Bond will be on the essence and use of blessings. We will consider the nature of what a blessing is according to how it is used in the bible and the liturgical rites of the Church, who can give a blessing, and what/who can be blessed. After a brief presentation on the topic there will be time for questions and answers. When? Wednesday, September 18th, 2019 @ 6:30 PM Where? Ave Maria Hall Why? ...Why not?

Our Cathedral Faith Community congratulates Erica Baque and Andy Nguyen, who were united in Christian Marriage on September 7, 2019.

Our Cathedral had the most delightful visitor last weekend. Father Dominic Thuy Dang Ha concelebrated a wedding Mass with Father Rommel. Father Dominic retired from the Diocese of Salt Lake City and he mentioned that the Vicar General of that Diocese, Monsignor Colin Bircumshaw, told him about the connection we have with their Diocese...the three Gothic Cararra marble altars that were obtained and installed in our church in 1923! They were installed in the Salt Lake City Cathedral in 1909 and then put in storage from 1917 - 1922. Monsignor Bircumshaw asked Father Dominic to take pictures so that he could see what the altars look like now. What a wonderful experience to celebrate dur-ing our sesquicentennial year!

Our Immaculate Conception Cathedral Faith Community prays for Phyllis Scalisi Penning, daughter of Olivia Scalisi, who died on September 8, 2019. We pray that she will find peace and joy in the presence of Our Lord. We extend our sincere sym-pathy to her family and to all who mourn her death.

Pastoral Council Election Update

Nominations have been received and the nominating committee is tasked with selecting the slate of nominees to be placed on the ballot. The proposed ballot will be submitted to the Pastoral Council for approval. The names, pictures, and a brief biography of each candidate will be in the bulletin before the election. The nominees will then be voted on by our registered pa-rishioners over the age of 18 at all the Masses on the weekend of October 19-20. For those travelling that weekend, early voting will be October 14-18 in the church office. Parishioners may vote only once. The two individuals who receive the highest number of votes will be elected to the Pastoral Council.

The next Cathedral Parish Family Picnic will be on Sunday, October 20 at Drew Park. Mark your calendars now and plan to join us. We have exciting things in store to celebrate our sesquicentennial! More information will be available soon.

We had a wonderful turnout for our new Altar Server training here at the Cathedral last week! We are so grateful to all who answered this call. We are also very grateful to have older, experienced Altar Servers who are willing to mentor and guide our young ones. “Dear altar servers! Your commitment to the altar is not only a duty, but a great honor, a genuine holy service. You are servers of Jesus Christ, of the eternal High Priest. Thus, you, altar servers, are called in particular to be young friends of Jesus. Be determined to go deeper and to cultivate this friendship with him. You will discover that in Jesus you have found a true friend for life.” Pope Saint John Paul II

Home School & Public School Parishioners: We are proud of all our students who are parishion-ers of the Cathedral and we want to include them in our bulletin! “By His wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5)

Prayer for Safety in Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, Hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of the land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seem-ing lethargy and overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities com-mon to this area and animated with a true spirit of grati-tude, we walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eter-nity awaits us. Amen

+The Most Reverend Maurice Schexnayder 2nd Bishop of Lafayette
