The Gospel of Mark 7:31-36 How can we be more open to God’s voice and touch in our lives? Our first instinct is that we have to immediately go and do something. No, this is not the way. Before doing a thing, we have to first allow ourselves to realize something, that which the deaf and mute man had known. It is God who is ever open to us, searching for us, and longing for us. We hear in the Gospel that this encounter which occurred between Jesus and the deaf man took place while Jesus was on a journey? He was on a journey precisely to that man, to his heart! Similarly, God will find no rest until he finds us. His very heart is restless as well, and that is why he set out for us to Bethlehem, to Calvary, and to the ends of the earth. And God’s search for each of our hearts continues, and it is this realization that will change everything in our lives. Msgr. Msgr. Geno Sylva

SAINT NICHOLAS OF TOLENTINO Feast Day: September 10

Appearance: Young man in the black habit of the Augustinian friars. Attributes: Star in the middle of his chest, book of the rule, crucifix, flowering lily.

Biographical notes: He was born in 1245 in the March of Ancona, Italy. As an Augustinian friar he educated and cared for outcasts and the sick. At Tolentino (near his birthplace), he mediated in the conflict between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. He died in 1305. Patronage: Invoked against the plague and fevers and for the liberation of souls in Purgatory; protector of ecumenism, maternity, infancy, and souls in Purgatory. The black habit with hood held in at the waist by a leather belt, usually also black, is the chosen dress of the Augustinian friars, the order to which Saint Nicholas belong. His most unique attribute is a radiant star on his chest, which alludes to the episode in which Saint Nicholas was led by a luminous star when he went to the church at night. His other attributes include a crucifix and, sometimes, a flowering lily. Nicholas may also hold the book of the rule. In rare cases, his attributes may include souls amid the flames of Purgatory, in memory of the Mass he celebrated for the salvation of the souls in Purgatory following an apparition.

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue. Then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, ‘Ephphatha’ that is ‘Be opened’ And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. They were exceedingly astonished and they said, ‘He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.’” Jesus the healer. People sought Him out bringing the needy person to Jesus. They requested the laying on of hands. They knew Jesus was the answer. This experience of Jesus’ healing is a bit different. Jesus takes him apart, touches, uses saliva, groans and speaks. The result is clearly indicated. Evidently he returned to the crowd who expressed their amazement at what took place. When we were baptized the minister also touched our ears and mouth saying ‘As Jesus made the deaf to hear and the mute to speak, so may He open your ears to hear His word and your mouth to proclaim His praise.’ The gesture can easily get lost. Have I heard the word? Do I proclaim His praise? Maybe I can be more attentive as I listen to the Word of God proclaimed at mass. Maybe I can take what I hear and learn, and bring it to someone else, telling them what the Lord has done or is doing in my life. Jesus continues to do miracles through us today.
