MESSAGE FROM THE REC TOR

T he Catholic Encyclopedia tells us that this Solemnity of Trinity Sunday comes from

the 14th century. Pope John XXII was inspired to

establish this celebration of our loving union with

each of the three Divine Persons . . . Father, Son

and Holy Spirit. This is the greatest mystery in

the universe: three distinct persons yet one

divine nature.

The mystery is not meant to intimidate us

but for us to enter into through Jesus, who is a

divine person with a truly human nature and a

truly divine nature. We share in the life and the

love of the Blessed Trinity. We are invited to

express our personal communion with the Trinity

in our relations with our neighbor through

sincere love, which is the foundation of peace,

harmony and right relationship with all people.

There is much to ponder in this mystery of

the Blessed Trinity. That’s why we begin and end

many prayers by invoking the heavenly Father,

through Jesus Christ, in unity of the Holy Spirit.

One outcome of our devotion to the

Blessed Trinity is a deeper trust

that each of us is personally involved with their

life and their love.

Each of us has some unique part of the

work of the Blessed Trinity. The Father, Son and

Holy Spirit trust each of us with this work and

support us in it. This participation gives each of

us a sense of identity, belonging and direction in

life. Blessed Cardinal John Newman put it this

way:

“God has created me to do Him some

definite service. He has committed some work

to me which He has not committed to another. I

have my mission. I may never know it in this life,

but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a

The Most Holy Trinity

chain, a bond of connection between persons.

He has not created me for naught. I shall do good;

I shall do His work.

I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of

truth in my own place, while not intending it

if I do but keep His commandments.

Therefore, I will trust Him, whatever I am,

I can never be thrown away.

If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve

Him, in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him.

If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve

Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He

is about. He may take away my friends. He may

throw me among strangers. He may make me feel

desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future

from me. Still, He knows what He is about.”

Today and everyday let us savor the

goodness and depth of the love of the Blessed

Trinity in our little prayer: Glory be to the

Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit...
