Honduras, the second poorest country in the

Western Hemisphere, lies in Central America

between Guatemala and Nicaragua, with coasts

on both the Caribbean and Pacific Oceans. The

vast majority of its people live in extreme

poverty, and since most poor children do not

attend school beyond the 3rd grade, the cycle of

hardship and poverty is repeated for families

through many generations.

Since 2003, Santa Maria de la Paz has sent

groups of teens and adults to spend time (an

average of more than one week) offering their

word and fellowship to the children and the

people of Missions in Honduras. Volunteers in

community, and praying with other volunteers and

staff. The Honduran Mission Group is currently

supporting its sister Parish, Santa Rosa de Lima and

the Mary Poussepin Girls School in Guaimaca,

Honduras.

The Honduran Mission Group planning committee

meets monthly to help support the travel and work of

the Mission Group each year. With the experience

gained from past travel, the Mission Group is able to

provide the volunteers with travel advice in

preparation for the trip including materials and

immunization requirements, passport application

process, etc. Though the accommodations and

meals in Honduras are simple, they are adequate.

The planning committee also works on an annual

fundraiser to help defray the expenses of those

wishing to make the trip but may be experiencing

financial hardship.
