CATECHETICAL SUNDAYToday is Catechetical Sunday, the beginning of another year of Faith Formation, another year to grow in our understanding of the faith we share.

Jesus teaches us that we are called to love one another. Love involves sacrifice. Sacrifice is a word that many of us don’t like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.

Jesús nos enseña que estamos llamados a amarnos los unos a otros. El amor implica sacrificio. Es una palabra que a muchos no nos gusta oír. Creemos que debemos renunciar a algo. This week’s Gospel reading (Mark 9:30-37) gives us a message that can a bit confusing – “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and a servant to all.” We live in a society that encourages us to put ourselves first, and to give into our wants. God’s wisdom helps us to find peace and happiness by putting our own desires aside, to have gratitude and to give instead of receiving. Find one way to serve each family member in your house. How do you feel when you put someone else’s needs above your own?

with your family.• Our faith is handed on in the small things that we do on
a regular basis. Some simple things to do this week – say a prayer together as a family (before meals, prayer for a great school week, etc), carve out some family time to play a game or take a walk or use this week’s Gospel as an inspiration to find a service project to help others.
The Catechetical blessing at Mass is for all families who are passing on the faith. May these blessings remain with you this week as you begin your faith journey with your family.

Dios Padre, ayúdame a poner nuestro egoísmo a un lado. Ayúdanos a encontrar el
gozo y paz al servir a los demás y llenarnos de gratitud ante todo lo que tenemos. Amén.
