Catch the Summer Reading Bug!!!
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Welcome to South Western School District’s Summer Reading Program! Reading is the most
important lifelong skill that we can help our children to learn and to practice.
Goal: To encourage students to read for pleasure and
continue to refine their reading skills in order to become lifelong readers.
Requirements:
Read FIVE books.
Complete a reading log entry for each book.
Complete a graphic organizer for EACH of the five books read. (Choose the graphic
organizer that best fits the book’s genre - either fiction or nonfiction.)
Write a summary of your favorite book and tell why you liked it.
Parents are encouraged to read aloud to and with their children.
Expectations:
This is a elementary-wide requirement.
Summer reading log and organizer are due by Friday, August 31.
Expect the graphic organizers and writing assignment to be used in class as a follow-up
activity.

Third Grade students are required to read five books over the summer. You may choose from the following book choices:
Any book from the suggested list
Any nonfiction or fiction book recommended by the public librarian
Any book title by an author from the list provided See instructions on the Summer Reading cover letter concerning the
activities.
The Guthrie Memorial Library will be able to assist you in your choices.
These suggestions can be used to help enhance your family’s Summer Reading experience:
