MINING AND SPACE
The mining sector is pivotal to the world’s economy and faces the challenge of transforming as part of Industry 4.0.
The extractive industry must adapt and innovate to build trust with local communities, protect Earth’s environmental
ecosystems, improve operations, and overcome significant issues, such as illegal mining and the trafficking of precious
metals.
The global nature and capabilities of satellites make them the perfect tool to provide relevant insights into mining activities.
This workshop will showcase how satellite applications and space solutions can benefit the mining sector.

Session 1: Monitoring and Improving Mining Operations
Satellite capabilities are key in supporting the mining industry to move towards more intelligent mines and creating
efficiencies across the mining lifecycle.
Satellites, combined with additional datasets, enable evidence-based decision-making in many areas; from monitoring
tailings dams, to quantifying stockpiles and assets, and mapping out the surface geology of an area of exploration.

Detail from 1864 - Wheal Clifford abandoned mine
plan – R103 transverse section
• Lithium first observed in “hot springs” in deep Cornish mines in 1864, when chemical examinationwas carried out on a sample from Wheal Clifford mine
• Numerous historical records indicate that lithium-enriched geothermal waters occur at depthacross a large area of the County
• Cornish Lithium is focussed on evaluating the economic potential to extract lithium from thesefluids
• The Company is not focussed on the historic mines themselves, but on deeper geological featuresthat host lithium-enriched waters
“The occurrence of so large an amount of lithium, being
eight to ten times as much per gallon as has been found in
any spring hitherto analysed, invests this water with
unusual interest and importance”

Lithium occurs in two different geological settings inCornwall:
1. Within lithium-enriched geothermal waters, whichcirculate at depth within permeable geological features
• Cornish Lithium plan to sample these fluids (seediagram)
• Results from drilling programme will guide futureexploration
2. In minerals within the granite rock which underlies theCounty
• Cornwall has one of only 5 known large scale, lithium enriched granite bodies worldwide (Source:USGS)

Data assembly • The Company has assembled a vast archive (+50,000
images) of historical data from public and private sources and is re-assembling this in digital format to model and predict the likely location of mineralisation in the subsurface
Strong understanding of geology• Our team has a strong understanding of geology and
mineral exploration, enabling identification of optimal targets for exploration drilling for lithium and other battery metals
Potentially economic grades• Historic data supports the presence of potentially
economic grades of lithium within geothermal waters in Cornwall

EO Exploration
1. In 2017/18 Cornish Lithium participated in the innovative project funded by Innovate UK and the Satellite Applications Catapult 2. This used various satellite-based techniques to investigate the possibility of using data from several platforms3. The focus was on mapping large faults which could act as regional scale conduits for lithium bearing brines at depth4. The project gathered data on alteration, heat flow, vegetation anomalies, surface deformation and combined this with traditional mapping4. The various outputs were collated and modelled into a new exploration tool which was used to predict areas for ground-based exploration5. The project was a success but needs further funding as the duration was too short

UK Government has recognised the need to explore the possibility of a UK-based lithium supply chain
Former Business and Energy Secretary, Greg Clark said:“We are committed to ensuring our world-leading automotive sector can flourish”
Consortium of Wardell Armstrong, Cornish Lithium and the Natural History Museum awarded justunder £500,000 to lead a new study looking at the feasibility of developing a UK supply of lithium
This study will build on expertise gained by Wardell Armstrong from EU-funded FAME project
Consortium will delineate potential ‘unconventional’ (non-spodumene) sources of lithium in the UK,with a SW focus, and develop a conversion process for UK material to battery grade lithium
Could bring lithium extraction and processing industry to Cornwall
