Matching up donors with local needs is what we strive for here at the Carlsbad

Community Foundation. It's rewarding to know we can facilitate positive growth in our community in the short term and also in the years beyond our lifetime.

At our upcoming event (see Page 4), we have a chance to thank our donors and

especially our benefactors for making the Foundation’s success possible. Since 1978, the community has supported this organization's philanthropic mission and we work every day to make a difference. Even since our last

issue of The Catalyst, several projects/events illustrate the diversity of the Foundation's reach in helping the community.

Grants from the Feezer Fine Arts Acquisition Fund and the Museum Amigos Fund allowed us to proudly play a role in the purchase of the Glenna Goodacre sculpture, “Buffalo Dancers,” at the Carlsbad Museum & Fine Arts Center. Working with local donors and the Carlsbad Veteran’s Memorial Park Committee, improvements have been and continue to be made at the Carlsbad Veterans Memorial Park. We partnered with Devon Energy who donated office furnishings to the Foundation that helped not only this organization, but five other local nonprofit organizations (see article at right). We awarded scholarships to continuing college students, many of whom are beyond high school, have raised families and/or have worked or are currently working as they further their education. And we continue to help in many other ways as the opportunity arises.

All the positive impacts achieved over the years are possible because of you and the many good-hearted people of our community who seek to make our world a better place … starting here.

Mike Antiporda is the executive director at the Carlsbad Community Foundation

Impact! Board of Directors recognizes new benefactors

Devon shares excess furniture for nonprofits

Burba, Cole & Overstreet L.L.C.Burba, Cole & Overstreet recently became the latest organization to be recognized with benefactor status. The organization, headed by Lyle Cole and John Overstreet, established the Burba, Cole & Overstreet Charity Fund in 2007. The purpose of the fund is to benefit local charitable organizations. The firm provides financial planning for clients to manage taxes, assets, investments, risks, education, retirement, and estate planning.

The Foundation thanks these donors for their dedication to the long-term well-being of our community._________________________The Board of Directors considers benefactor status in consultation with donors or may approve the status posthumously following a qualifying gift as part of a will, bequest or other planned giving document. Donors who may be eligible for consideration can request a review by Foundation staff at any time.

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the approval of Mary Fielder and Burba, Cole & Overstreet as the latest benefactors of the Carlsbad Community Foundation. Benefactors are those individuals or organizations approved by the Board having cumulatively donated $10,000 or more to the Foundation to benefit endowed funds.

Mary FielderMary Fielder recently established the Richard and Mary Fielder Fund, which is a Designated Fund to benefit the Carlsbad Public Library. Mary approached the Foundation about establishing a new endowment fund in memory of her late husband, Richard. After a 25-year career as a reference librarian at the Houston Public Library, he and Mary retired to Carlsbad. For 20 years he served as a member of the Carlsbad Library Board. He was also active in the Carlsbad Community Theater.

Thanks to the generosity of Devon Energy Corporation, some nonprofit organizations are

sporting some new office furniture. The company recently relocated a temporary office trailer that was in a field location near Orla, Texas. The change meant they no longer needed the office furniture and rather than sell it or put it in storage, they decided to put it to good use in the community.

Shannon Johnson, Devon's Senior Community Relations Specialist based out of Artesia, NM, contacted the Foundation's Executive Director Mike Antiporda about the donation. Devon transported the furniture to the Foundation office in downtown Carlsbad, where a crew was waiting to unload it.

Soon, the Foundation's office was filled to capacity with desks, chairs, files and various other pieces of furniture. In the end, every piece of furniture was used to benefit the community. In addition to the Foundation, which was in need of a large conference table and other items, five other local organizations with needs also benefitted. Those organizations were the Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad, the Carlsbad Literacy Program, Carlsbad Mainstreet, the Carlsbad Transitional Housing & Homeless Shelter and the Cavern City Child Advocacy Center.

Many thanks to Devon for their gracious consideration of our local community.

Chevron Charitable Fund to benefit community

tay tuned for exciting news from the Foundation Sand Chevron. Chevron is establishing a special fund that will be used by the Foundation to award grants for community needs.

Criteria and the process for submitting a grant request will be established and announced at a later date. The Foundation is looking forward to partnering with Chevron on this new initiative.

At right, Dolores Vick of Chevron and Foundation Board President Neal Dungan met recently in Carlsbad.

The Masterof Ceremonies

Mike Currier readies for his celebrated role

Besides keeping the Foundation's events on schedule and moving along with precision, there's one skill in particular that garners praise for Mike from all who attend – storytelling.

“Mike doesn't simply stand at the microphone and talk to the crowd,” said Executive Director Mike Antiporda, “He tells a story, draws the audience in and allows us to feel the emotion of the moment as if we were living it ourselves.”

His success as the master of ceremonies is not accidental. He prepares as though studying for an exam -- reviewing his materials, asking questions and looking for the heartfelt details just below the surface that are often overlooked.

The Foundation's 38-year history and the generosity of the community that has sustained its work offers a wealth of stories to be told. Others may be able to tell you about it, but Mike Currier will let you experience it.

Looking back,

Mike says

all of the

presentations

of awards have

been special

for him.

ublic speaking is one of people's greatest Pfears, but that's certainly not the case for Mike Currier. In fact, the retired businessman is well known in our community for his oratory skills and he's getting ready to step up to the podium once again.

Since 2004, Mike has served as the master of ceremonies at the Carlsbad Community Foundation's annual dinner. And this year, he's signed on to serve in that role at the Foundation's new annual event scheduled for November 3.

“This year's event is going to be different and interactive. Being a betting man, I'd put money on the table that the community is going to enjoy it immensely,” he said. “I'm excited to be a part of it!”

The formal reception will be the Foundation's thank you to those who make its philanthropic mission possible. In addition to thanking donors, the event will specifically recognize Foundation Benefactors, those who are recognized by the Board as having cumulatively given $10,000 or more to endowed funds. Rather than a traditional sit-down dinner and program, the reception will

focus on bringing together the Foundation family and honoring the generous spirit of the community.

“I have introduced 90 award recipients over the last 12 years,” Mike said as he reminisced about previous years' events. “Each has been unique and a story of its own.”

He chuckled as he recalled some lighthearted moments.

“Probably the one bringing the biggest laughs was in 2012 when Gene Hood started his remarks accepting the Pioneer Award by saying the number one requirement for this award was 'being old!' And who will ever forget 96-year-old T.L. London standing at the podium quoting one cowboy poem after another!”

Looking back, Mike says all of the presentations of awards have been special for him.

“Probably the most emotional,” he concluded, “have been those going to the Humanitarian Award recipients, because of what they have done to help others.”

Scholarships awarded to continuing studentshe Carlsbad Community Foundation Trecently completed the selection and award

process for scholarships for continuing students. In our last issue of The Catalyst, we reported on the many scholarship awards made to graduating high school seniors. But these more recent awards are designated for a different kind of student.

The Foundation announced the availability of scholarships for non-traditional students from Carlsbad and South Eddy County. These continuing students are often returning to college after working other jobs, raising families or even seeking a career change.

Students studying for careers in a variety of fields benefitted. Their fields of study included education, business, nursing, veterinary medicine and more.

The demand for scholarships among this group of students is high and we are proud to assist members of our community with their educational goals. These scholarships of varying amounts and durations were awarded to 19 students and have a total value of about $35,000.

2016 Carlsbad Community Foundation Reception

Thursday, November 3, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pecos River

Village Carousel House

We will be thanking our family of donors and benefactors for their

generous support of Carlsbad and South Eddy County.

Please RSVP by October 24, 2016 by calling 887-1131 to reserve your

complimentary tickets.

Carlsbad’s community playground was originally constructed in 2002 and is set to get a major facelift from September 28 to October 2. The Project Playground Fund at the Foundation will support the effort, which is being spearheaded by the City of Carlsbad, Nuclear Waste Partnership LLC and the United Way of Carlsbad & South Eddy County.
