[2019 Summer Research Fellowship]

The Biochemistry Department hosted 5 students this spring for our 2019 Outreach Event. The department hosted these undergrad-

uate students during the week of March 11-15, 2019. In attendance were Michael Watcher, Lexi Fritts, Julia Ivey, Payton Jackson, all

from Shepherd University, and Sarah Starcovic from Fairmont State. The students spent the week visiting various labs, taking part

in journal clubs, etc.

Assistant Professor WVU Graduate Advisor: Lisa Salati, Ph.D.

Degree/Graduation Year: PhD 2006

Current Position/Title/Location:

Assistant Professor, BITS-Pilani, Goa, India

What have you been up to since you left WVU? Career, family, other life events that you would like to share.

After my graduation from WVU, I did two

post docs from UCSD and Sanford-

Burnham Institute of Medical Research-La

Jolla, California. After completion, I came

back to India and got my current job. I am

in BITS since 2013. Raising my son

Awnnesh (Rijul), now almost 11, teaching

and working hard to establish a research

group.

What do you enjoy most about your cur-rent position, field of study, or your cur-rent life endeavors?

I mostly enjoy interacting with my stu-

dents in the class. Some are extraordinari-

ly brilliant. Recently one got acceptance

from the graduate school of Harvard. In-

stances like this, makes me extremely

proud. Apart from that my son keeps me

busy in every way possible.

What advice would you give to current or incoming graduate students here at WVU?

WVU trains it’s graduate students well.

Take the advantage of that. Be focused and

exploit every opportunity the graduate

school provides.

How did your experience at WVU con-tribute to your professional career?

I learnt molecular biology and different

related techniques, RNA splicing, metabo-

lism, signal transduction, handling animal

models, cell culture hood etc. which I regu-

larly use here in my teaching or research.

WVU remains a major contributor in my

profession. My first experience with re-

search took place here. I would say experi-

ence in WVU made aware about my field of

study, what is expected from a researcher,

how one should prepare herself if she

wants to continue on this road etc. I learnt

during my graduate studies and still try to

follow.

The[Spotlight]

"The reasonable man tries to change himself to fit the world. The unreasonable man tries to change the world to fit himself. All progress depends on the unreasonable man”. ~ George Bernard Shaw

The Basics Title: Professor

Lab/Office: 3119

1. What was your very first job. I worked as a Westinghouse “repairman” who didn’t know how to repair anything. My job was to make house calls, listen to stories and drink coffee with the home-owner while the other guy did the repairs. 2. Hands-down favorite movie? A. “My Twentieth Century” (in Hungarian

with subtitles). It’s a fairy tale, kind of. B. “Bullets over Broadway (Woody Allen).

Have to admit, I love “The Princess Bride” too—a side effect of raising a daughter.

3. If you could have dinner with any his-torical figure/world leader/scientist/celebrity, who would it be and why? A. Malcolm Gladwell. He has novel, data-

based insight into almost everything. B. Pat Metheny. We could jam after din-

ner! 4. Any special talents? (e.g. juggling, singing, dancing…) I write guitar tunes-- mostly instrumental jazz-fusiony genre (can’t write lyrics to save my life). 5. Who was your favorite teacher/professor in school and why? A. My high school math teacher, Mr.

Bishop, who would often say “this is intuitively obvious from birth”. I find myself telling my students that, fifty years later.

B. My undergrad research mentor, Rolf Sternglanz (SUNY Stony Brook), and my grad student mentor, Zena Werb (UCSF). Two of the best and most in-spirational scientists I know.

6. Have you ever met anyone famous? Bill Clinton, Amy Tan, Bruce Hornsby, Bob Weinberg, the late Judah Folkman (we were collaborating on a project when he

passed away). 7. What are you thankful for? My wonderful wife and my daughter. 8. What do you think people would be most surprised to know about you? A. I have a 12-year old daughter and

three adult step-children. B. I play in a rock band. 9. When/where did you meet your best friend? In hospital the day I was born—he’s a few months older. He and I are still best friends to this day (he lives in New York, where we grew up). 10. Favorite quote: “The reasonable man tries to change him-self to fit the world. The unreasonable man tries to change the world to fit him-self. All progress depends on the unrea-sonable man”. George Bernard Shaw

[Biochemistry Retreat 2019]

"Science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the world." ~ Louis Pasteur

The Biochemistry Department hosted a

retreat for Faculty on May 15-16 2019.

The Faculty and Staff discussed various

topics.

We talked about the department and the

culture within. We discussed ways to

build camaraderie and respect, create a

culture of inclusion and openness, time

management, foster communication with-

in our department and also within the

other departments and administration

here at the HSC.

We discussed Research, and how we can

work together to improve and strengthen

our research efforts, stimulate new ideas,

resources we have available to us, ways

to generate revenue to fund our efforts,

and finally, how we can maximize all

these ideas to reach the goal of strength-

ening our research efforts.

Next we discussed Graduate Education,

and the various ways we can improve our

teaching efforts, refine and improve the

curriculum, and assist our students in

exploring various career options.

We feel that the retreat was productive,

and the time discussing these various

topics, setting goals, and laying the

groundwork to implement them, will

benefit our success over the next year

and years to come.
