Today’s Learning Targets

• LT 3.9 – Given an element, I can convert between the number of moles to particles and particles back to moles

I. The Importance of Avogadro’s Number

• Avogadro’s number tells us that there are 6.022 x 1023 particles in 1 mole of anything.

• Therefore, Avogadro’s number is used as our conversion factor between moles and particles of a substance.

Page 8: Catalyst 1. How many moles are in 42 g of NaOH 2. How many grams are in 2 moles of HBr End.

II. Moles Particles Conversion Factor

• Our conversion factor for moles particles is:

6.022 x 1023 particles

mole

Can be reversed to fit conversion

Class Example

• You react 3 moles of HCl for the following reaction. How many molecules of HCl did you use for this reaction?

Page 10: Catalyst 1. How many moles are in 42 g of NaOH 2. How many grams are in 2 moles of HBr End.

Table Talk

• If you react 4 moles of MnO2, how many particles of MnO2 did you use in this reaction?

Page 11: Catalyst 1. How many moles are in 42 g of NaOH 2. How many grams are in 2 moles of HBr End.

• If you react 25 g of MnO2. How many particles of MnO2 did you use in this reaction?

The Amazing Race• There are 8 different clues that you and your

teammate will be given.• These clues are around the room and will require

you to solve various stoichiometry problems.• There are different types of problems that you

will face and difficulty of the stoichiometry problem depends on the portion of the race that you are on

• You must check your answers with me before moving on!

Page 16: Catalyst 1. How many moles are in 42 g of NaOH 2. How many grams are in 2 moles of HBr End.

Detour• You will have to choose between two stoichiometry problems before you start working on them. • You must decide on the one you want to solve before beginning

Roadblock• Before beginning you must decide on one person to solve the problem. • You cannot help the person

Fast Forward• An intense stoich. problem that if you get it right will jump you to the end of the race. Can only be completed at Stop 6.

Yield• At multiple points in the race there will be yield signs.• At one point you can have a group behind you stop and wait 3 min. The team must be behind you and you must give me your yield card

Question 1• Both Partners should complete this problem

• You are about to start the race in New York City. You want to make sure you stay hydrated so you go to the drinking fountain and drink 126 g of H2O. How many moles of H2O did you just drink?

• Show Mr. Astor once you have finished the problem.

Question 2

•1. Welcome to Algeria! Algeria produces a large amount of NaCl from its salt mines. You get off the plane and you sprinkle 6 moles of NaCl on your food. How much NaCl did you just put on your food? •Show Mr. Astor the answer when you finish.

•2. Welcome to Algeria! Algerians love their sugary foods. You eat 1,080 g of C6H12O6 after you get off the plane. How many moles of sugar did you just eat?•Show Mr. Astor the answer when you are complete.

• Hint – Libya is a rather explosive place

• Libya has been through a lot lately. A lot of TNT has been going off. TNT is also known as C7H5N3O6. If you have 5 moles of C7H5N3O6, then how many grams of N2will you produce in this reaction?

Question 4• Question 4

• Both Partners should complete this problem

• Welcome to Egypt! The Ancient Egyptians are credited with inventing the process by which we can make paper. A common chemical that is used in today’s paper making industry is Na2CO3. If I have 530 g of Na2CO3, then how many particles of Na2CO3 do I have?
