Scenario
GIS Applications:
multiple domains (agriculture, transports, geology, etc.); proprietary (e.g. based on commercial GISs); working on a variety of geodata formats; interoperable through geodata export/import;
Geodata conversion: costly and complex.

Recovery initiatives
Political: GSDI, NSDI, EGII (GI2000), etc.;
Technological: open formats, but mainly open APIs;
OGC (Open GIS Consortium®);
However the interoperability through geodata exchange willsurvive for a while.

Requirements
User needs: locate the data; determine (with metadata) if data meet own needs; request data processing (e.g. filter, project, clip); transfer and import data onto own GIS applications;
Organizational needs: cataloguing data (with metadata); making metadata and data available on the network; setting a legal framework for sharing data (and costs);

Client functions (on metadata):
attribute search (e.g. date > 01/01/94, type=“vector”); spatial search by gazetter (e.g. within “Tuscany”); spatial search by Area Of Interest (AOI); spatial search by computed AOI; show attributes (e.g. CEN/TC 287); show browse graphic; show spatial domain (footprint);

Funding:
ESPRIT project GEO2DIS (8017, EC DGIII); Telematics project GeoMed (2037, EC DGXIII); GIS-HighWays (IMI), indirectly; MUIS (ESA/ESRIN), indirectly;
Next future:
tackle the CEN/TC 287 - ISO/TC 211 dilemma; metadata interoperability (e.g. UML/XML); towards an unified infrastructure (e.g. with ESA services); exploit the interoperable GISs (when available);
