A CATALOGUE OF MONGOL MANUSCRIPTS FROM ORDOS

This is a catalogue of MSS, tile majority of which are from Ordus, acquired mostly by Antoine Mostaert, 1905-1925.

ANT. MOSTAERT TOLD ME ONCE that he gave a horse for one particular MS, Unfortunately, I have forgotten which one that was. He used to tell that several Mongols were on the lookout for Mss in private possession. He would then either purchase them, which was not too easy since very few Mongols readily parted with those writings, or he would have them copied by somebody. This will explain why so many of the texts listed below are from around 1910.

In fact among the very few pieces salvaged from the archives of the Diocese of Ning-hsia, there is a list of Mss, oral stories, and songs compiled by Ant. Mostaert, apparently very soon after his ar- rival in Ordos judging from the unusual and lack of consistent transcription. Presumably this is a list of various works to be acquired (writings he had heard about through his "agents"). The loca- tion or owner of some of the texts is indicated on the list. The number and variety of texts on this early list show the wide range of interest of Ant. Mostaert and his informants. It is quite possible that some titles are only approximations; he had not yet seen the mSS. According to my confrere, Rev. Jos. Van Hecken (letter of Sept. 18, 1973) who had access to the Ning-hsia archives and made a copy of the list, the correspondence between the Bishop Alph. Bermijn(1853-1915) andAnt. IMostaert regularly makes mention of the listed MSs.

I believe that this early list itself is of enough interest to warrant publication here. I copy it here integrally in translation when necessary and with the Mongol words in standard transcription. My own comment will be found between brackets [ ]. From hereon "L" refers to this list, and "C" to the catalogue of Miss following this introduction.

INTRODUCTION

WHEN THE REV. ANT. MOSTAERT (1881-1971) LEFT CHINA in December, 19-18, he brought with him a number of Mongol manuscripts which he

had collected during his stay in Ordos (1905- 1925), and in Tientsin and Peking (1925-1948). In his various articles he referred to some of these manuscripts and occasionally quoted a few lines from them. In collecting these manuscripts he followed the tradition of his predecessors. At the headquarters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Congregation, Scheut (Brussels), and at Louvain, Belgium, there are a number of Mongol aIss. These were described by W. Heissig, "The Mongol Manu- scripts and Xylographs of the Belgian Scheut- Mission," Central Asiatic Journal II, 3, pp. 161-189 (one manuscript mentioned in the articles, a fragment of the Geser-qayan story, was published in facsimile with a brief description: W. Heissig, "Das 'Scheuter' Geser-khan-manuskript" Zen- tralasiatische Studien V, 1971, pp. 43-77). Several of the MNss brought to the United States by Ant. Mostaert were collected already before his time, especially by the Rev. Flor. Claeys (1871-1950) (who preceded Ant. Mostaert as superior of the mission station of Boro-Balgasu, and after 1925 succeeded him again).

It is strange that so few of the works listed here were actually acquired or copied. The Catalogue comprises mostly other works.

Except for one MS brought from Jehol, and afew from Caqar (all indicated), all items listed below belonged to Ant. Mostaert; all were found or copied in Ordos. It should be noted however that the Undiisiin bsang (Nr 77) is a MS several cen- turies old, and no one could tell where it originated. Ant. Mostaert purchased it in Suiyiian in 1937 (he had gone to Ta-t'ung just at the time of the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese war and as the fighting came close to Ta-t'ung he went to Suiyian where the Japanese armies caught up with him). The Nrs 147-155 are also fragments of very old Mss, and I suppose Ant. Mostaert discovered them in Ordos, but they could have been written in other parts of the country.

A small number of Mss not listed here are: the Erdeni-yin Tob6i, three Mss which were published in fac-simile as Scripta Mongolica II (four vols.), Cambridge, Mass., 1956; and the Bolor Erike (Scr. Mongol. III, five vols.), Cambridge, Mass., 1959. The original Mss of these publications are now deposited at the Library of Congress. The original Ms published as Manual of Mongolian Astrology and Divination, Scripta Mongol. V, 1969, is now in the possession of Prof. Fr. W. Cleaves, Harvard University.

Apart from the extensive holdings in the Mon- golian People's Republic, many lists of Mongol books and MIss in the possession of libraries in the United States and in various European countries have been published during the last twenty-five years, and I thought that the publication of this catalogue, too, would be a small contribution to this field of knowledge. 1.
