Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Private & Comparative Law at McGill University
The Faculty of Law, McGill University, true to its mission of teaching private law in a transsystemic , pluralistic setting, seeks
applications from leading scholars in private law. The Faculty is seeking to enhance and stimulate its inquiries into the social
dimensions of private law and the concepts underlying private law. In this spirit, the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private
and Comparative Law has recently begun to focus its research activities on a number of neglected areas of property and
trusts. Potential avenues of inquiry might look at the social obligations of property, here framed widely a s both pertaining to
traditional resources and to intellectual resources; the manner in which private resources help to fulfill human capacities o r
human development; or the way in which such progressive approaches provide critical additions, correctives o r responses to
doctrinal, formal or economic understandings of property institutions. Such an approach might also provoke more detailed
studies of trusts, or investigations into the larger generic concepts relevant to private law, such as ethics, equity ( epikeia or
aequitas), loyalty, fiduciary obligations or duty. As well, more precise generic concepts present in some private law systems,
such as good faith or abus de droit might be valuable objects of study. The scholar would possess a distinguished record of
achievement in these areas. Background in other areas of private law would also be an asset. A rich background in the
historical development of property and trust institutions in the United States and around the world would be an additional
asset.
Specializations: Private Law, Property, Social Obligations, Intellectual Property, Trusts, Equity.

Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in the Theory and Practice of Constitutionalism and Federalism at
McGill University
The Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in the Theory and Practice of Constitutionalism and Federalism, at McGill University in
the Department of Political Science and the Research Group on Constitutional Studies, is open to established or emerging
scholars in political theory and political science, and open with respect to methodology. The Chair will pursue research in
constitutionalism broadly construed; an interest in federalism in particular is desirable but not necessary. The ability to
engage with scholars and students across methodologies – normative, empirical, intellectual-historical, jurisprudential, and
formal, for example – is more important that particular areas of emphasis.
Sample areas of interest include: the constitutional status of federalist arrangements, including their judicial enforceabili ty,
their founding status, and their effects on other constitutional structures; empirical comparative studies of federalism;
analytic or formal modeling of federal systems; normative research on the justifiability and justifiable shape of federalism, as
compared with unitary, confederal, and subsidiary models of government; the intellectual foundations of federalism, including
the history of federalist thought; multiethnic federalism; the relationship between constitutionalism and democracy or
between constitutionalism and liberalism; the stability of constitutional systems; constitutional political economy,
constitutional entrenchment and judicial review; the history of constitutional thought.
Specializations: Political Theory, Political Science, History of Political Thought, Federalism, Constitutionalism, Constitutional
Interpretation, Judicial Review, Jurisprudence.
