Piet Hein Eek developed a vision on recycling long before it came

into fashion. The scrapwood cupboard from 1990 was my reaction

against the prevalent craving for flawlessness. I was walking around

in a lumberyard and suddenly realized that old wood looked better

than new. We are used to wanting mass products that are perfectly

produced and look exactly the same. But I thought that there was

space for imperfection. If you make honest furniture with natural

materials and it gets old or scratched, it still looks beautiful its

aesthetic value never diminishes. I wanted to show that products that

arent perfect still can appeal to our sense of aestetic and functionality.

I also wanted to design a product that could be made with limited

means, material that was abundant. The combination of uncommon

material and also uncommon, but simple methods of working became

the thread through our work.

Rick Vintage: Scrapwood Wallpaper is a perfect example of the Piet

Hein Eek way of working, it is simply putting planks to paper. The

effect is astonishing, the quality is so high that you could foul anyone

in to thinking it is real. People just love it. If it puts a smile on peoples

faces then you really have a great product.

The Scrapwood Wallpaper has won the ICFF New York Editors

Award in 2011. It has been featured in the New York Times, Daily

News, Country Living, Shelterpop, Remodelista, Core77, Cup of Jo,

DesignBoom, HypeBeast, Design*sponge, etc.

Rick Vintage: Working with Piet Hein has been an incredible journey, it

skyrocketed our company worlwide. Piet Hein is like his designs: one of

a kind. He has a very clear view and uncommon ideas on how to run a

business. So besides being a great designer he is also a great source

for invaluable advice.

Dutch designer Piet Boon is world famous for the incredible

sophistication in his designs. The robust yet elegant classic Piet Boon

style combines natural materials with subdued colour palettes for an

unrivaled look that is authentic in every way. His attention to detail and

esthetics can be found in private homes, beach houses, retail stores,

resorts, hotels, public spaces, the furniture label and numerous product

designs all over the world.

Piet Boon: We were absolutely stunned when we first visited NLXL.

The production methods, level of quali ty and the companys unique

expertise and passion were a real eye opener. We are very proud of our

Concrete Wallpaper. The result is amazing in every aspect. One really

has to touch it to feel the difference with the real thing.

Concrete with its sober, subdued character is one of my favorite

materials. And now there is this fabulous wallpaper which lets one

transform a space, be it a wall or ceilings easily and in a very affordable

way. We also plan to use it for wainscoting panels and ceiling. Another

huge advantage is that minor damages dont show. They seemingly

simply disappear naturally in the structure.

Wallpaper has made its rightful comeback. Over many centuries walls

have been decorated and enriched with wallpaper. It creates interest

and a warm and pleasant atmosphere.

Rick Vintage: Piet Boon is one of our idols. We are absolutely thrilled

to create a backdrop for his contemporary designs. The rough edge

of concrete has always been present at his interiors, so our teams got

together to create Concrete Wallpaper. You wont believe your eyes, it

is better than the real thing! It has been a wonderful experience to work

with Piet and Karin Boon and their team.

MERCI opened in march 2009 in the arty neighborhood of Haut-Marais

in Paris. MERCI is an exceptional place that proposes an eclectic

selection of design and fashion. More than just a retail project, it is a

unique place, a destination store with 3 cafs and restaurants as well

a very rich programme of exhibitions and scenographies that made the

reputation of MERCI.

Jean-Luc Colonna dIstria of MERCI: In 2009, MERCI selected this

vintage ceiling tins as a dcor concept for the Parisien store. Since the

opening, there is no one day whithout seing a visitor taking pictures of

the MERCI tin counter or asking to buy it. This phenomenon has given

MERCI the idea to get together with NLXL to design and market the

wallpaper collection Brooklyn Tins.

Historically, tin ceillings were introduced to North America as an

affordable alternative to the exquisite plaster work used in European

homes. It was between 1890 and 1930 that thin rolled tin-plates were

being mass-produced. More than 45 companies marketed metal

ceilings. Most were in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York, located along

railroad lines that served as the main routes for delivering the pressed

metal products directlty to contractors. Tin ceilings were traditionally

painted white to give the appearance of hand- carved or molded

plaster. But, today the irregularity and the aging give all the appeal to

this American architecture icon.

NLXL Founder Rick Vintage has a background in interior design. In

2005 he imported pressed tin plates for a restaurant project in the

Netherlands. Ever since we installed these tins I knew we had to

do something with this beautiful product. MERCI is our key account

in Paris, so we work very close together in marketing our wallpaper

collections in Paris. At one of the famous parties during the Paris

Design Week in january 2012 the design team of MERCI asked us if we

were interested to make a wallpaper collection based on vintage tins.

Brooklyn Tins was born. It is a great honour to work with the talented

MERCI team. I think the collection shows the pleaseure we have had in

working together on this project.
