highlighTs For Fall

I’m Ursula, the new Marketing/Special Events Coordinator at NCE. When friends learn about my new job, I frequently hear, “I love NCE!” followed by a story about how one of our programs has touched their lives. One friend described the mother-son bonding she experienced while taking several woodworking classes with her son. Another described resur-recting an interest in painting after a long break. Still another talked about how a Business & Career class set her down the road to starting her own small business.

I have my own NCE stories, too, since over the 14 years we’ve lived in Newton, my three sons have taken 13 NCE classes among them. I am particularly grateful for the fencing program. My youngest son tried the mainstream sports that his brothers and friends played, but nothing ever clicked. Then he discovered Fencing through an NCE after-school program, and it has become his true passion. He is now fencing competitively at the national level. I will forever be thankful for the introduction to the sport he received through NCE. Having seen firsthand the difference a single class can make, I am thrilled to be a part of this incredible community resource where kids and adults pursue passions, develop skills, and discover new interests.

I was very familiar with NCE’s classes before coming to work here, but I knew little about our special programs and events like Lifetime Learning (p.30), our continuing education program for seniors, and our Mindfulness program (p.31) which promotes improved well-being. I especially want to call your attention to Celebrate Newton (p.3), NCE’s annual juried crafts fair. Much of my time over the past few months has been spent assembling a talented group of artisans and craftspeople for the fair. I plan to do my holiday shopping at Celebrate Newton (Sunday, December 7th at Newton South High School). I hope that you will, too!

NCE has something for everyone. Take a look at our fall catalog, and sign up for class that appeals to you. You never know where it might lead.

We’d admire the upbeat, positive, Oprah Winfreys of the world, and think, “If only we had their brains...” Now, neuroscience reveals that we can change our brains with simple mental exercises, just as we can change our bodies with a daily workout. We can in fact become open, more positive, and genuinely happier, not by repressing our negative thoughts, but by building up the positive pathways in our brains. Before long, we can develop a natural buoyancy in our thinking, and, along with it, a boost in our creativity, intuition, immune system, love lives, and careers. Writing

New

CriTiCal ThiNkiNg & essaY WriTiNgLionel Claris, InstructorDo you want to improve your critical think-ing skills? We all have opinions that would benefit from critical introspection. Essay writing is an effective way to deepen your thinking and to improve your communi-cation skills as well. If you want to learn to think and write critically about pretty much anything under the sun, then this class is for you. In contrast to “creative writing,” the emphasis of critical writing is not so much on creating a literary narrative as on giv-ing a voice to your opinions. This can take many forms, including articles, argumenta-tive essays, Op-ed pieces, and what some-times goes under the name of personal essay writing. Even with the latter, however, the focus is not just on telling your story—although that is a part of it—but it is on communicating effectively what you think and why. In this class you practice being reflective about topics of interest to you, learn to organize your thinking better and become more methodical about writing.

You’ll design simple machines to solve fairy tale heroes’ problems–help Lego Sam and Sara create Rapunzel’s tower and a pulley system to lift her lunch, and build a block-carrying car to fix Prince Charming’s busted buggy. Then you’ll switch “gears” and explore chemistry: use acids and bases to make pu-trid potions; baffle bacteria to make model mucus and alien slime; and dissect some owl puke. Yuck! Grades K–1.

NCe/Naa YoUTh baskeTball NCE is happy to partner with the Newton Athletic Association (NAA), Newton’s largest youth basketball program. Leagues are for players in grades 3–12; the program is for all players regardless of ability or experience. (High school JV or varsity players may not participate.) Boys are in the majority, but girls are welcome to play in all leagues. A mandatory evaluation clinic is held in late October to assist in creating balanced teams for all leagues. Practices are one night per week (Monday–Thursday and possibly Sunday) beginning in November and running through early March. Teams play 10 to 12 games on Saturdays and/or Sundays. The number of games, when and where they are played, and practice locations, may vary by grade level. League information and online registration will be available on September 3. See www.naabasketball.org for more details.

aCT reVieW ClassesThe ACT is the college-readiness standard-ized test of choice in most of our country, and it is steadily gaining in popularity here in Massachusetts. It is accepted by all colleges, as is the SAT. The ACT may be a better choice for some students: it is considered more straightforward than the SAT, it tests science knowledge as well as more advanced math, and its writing section is optional for some schools (and is not reflected in the composite score). NCE is pleased to offer its first ACT test preparation class this fall. As with our SAT prep classes, it will be offered in two sec-tions—one for Math/Science and one for English/Reading—and students can choose to enroll in one or both.

aCT MaTh/sCieNCe reVieWDivya Balakrishnan, InstructorThis class will cover both the Math and Science sections of the ACT exam. We’ll devote one hour to math—learning con-tent, applying it to questions on the ACT, and developing skills to omit unlikely answers/increase the likelihood that you’ll answer a question correctly. In the other hour we’ll focus on the science section, developing your critical thinking skills so you can efficiently gather the information you need from a passage to correctly an-swer conceptual multiple choice questions.

WriTe sUCCessFUl essaYs For YoUr College aPPliCaTioNJacqueline Clark, InstructorThink you can write your college applica-tion essay the night before it’s due? Think again! Writing a standout essay doesn’t happen overnight. In this class, you’ll work with a professional writer who will help you choose your topic and improve your writing style. We’ll start by discuss-ing what colleges are looking for (an es-say that reflects who you are), and then, you’ll write. You’ll receive weekly written feedback on your essays as well as helpful critiques from your classmates. By the end of the class, you’ll be well on your way towards completion of your two Common Application essays, and you’ll have a handle on other essays your college applications may require. For the first session, please bring pencils and paper, or a laptop, if you have one, and a completed copy of our Background Info Form, which is available under Forms on our website.

DriVer’s eDNewton Driving School staff, InstructorsWhen you successfully complete a course in Driver’s Education, you can get your license before the age of 18. The course has a state-mandated curriculum which re-quires 30 hours of classroom instruction, a two-hour parent training session, 12 hours of behind-the-wheel on-the-road training, and six hours of backseat driver observa-tion time. In addition, it is expected that you spend 40 hours of practice driving time with an experienced adult driver.

You can enroll in Driver’s Ed classroom lessons at the age of 15 years 9 months, and can begin road lessons at age 16 with a valid learner’s permit. Tuition includes all classroom time and on-the-road time, the parent training class, and the $15 fee to the Registry of Motor Vehicles for a Certificate of Completion of Driver Education. Tuition does not include Registry fees for your permit and license, or the cost for the road test for your license, if you choose to schedule that here in Newton rather than with the RMV.

Our classroom lessons are held at the lo-cations listed; road lessons are scheduled between the student and the driving school (these begin and end at one of the high school entrances). The City of Newton requires that all our student drivers set up lesson times with a buddy in the car; no student can drive alone with the instructor. A cancellation fee of $30 will apply if stu-dents cancel driving lessons with less than 24-hours notice, or arrive for driving les-sons without a buddy or without a permit.

When you register, you will receive an email confirmation with a link to a contract with Newton Driving School. The student and a parent must agree to these terms; please fill out and sign the contract, and bring it to your first class. Bring a notebook and pen to each class. Parents: Don’t forget to sign up for your Parent class, see KH09 to register.
