A Royal Treasure

�e Javanese Batik Collection of King Chulalongkorn of Siam

King Chulalongkorn (Rama V, r. 1868-1910) visited the island of Java three times: in 1871, 1896 and 1901.

His Majesty experienced warm hospitality from the Javanese and Dutch o�cials he met, collecting many

things including over 300 examples of batik. �ese have been stored in the Inner Court of the Grand Palace

since 1910 when His Majesty passed away.

�e Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles (QSMT) was kindly given permission to exhibit and publish this

collection. �ere are many beautiful and rare examples of this UNESCO-recognized Javanese art form,

including pieces from famous workshops, rare survivals and those dyed red in a shade no longer possible

to produce due to water pollution. �e QSMT is pleased to be able to share this “royal treasure” with the

public for the �rst time and tell the story of His Majesty’s travels.
