The Academy of Integrative Medicine (AIM) is

dedicated to providing exceptional instruction in

alternative and non-invasive health care methods through

distance learning, seminars, teleconferences and on-site

training. We serve health care professionals throughout

the United States. Our student population includes, (but

is not limited to), pharmacists, naturopaths, medical

doctors, registered nurses, and chiropractors.

AIM teaches the practitioner to look at the body as a

whole, analyzing all symptoms no matter how unrelated

they may seem. The puzzle cannot be solved when

pieces are missing. We use a variety of tools and

methods to review each case then we turn to natural

medicine to select our course of care. These include,

supporting practitioners of Natural Medicine in their endeavor to expand into a variety of

Homeopathy is a pharmaceutical science that uses the body's natural ability to heal itself. Homeopathic medicines use very small doses of an active ingredient (plant, animal or mineral) to stimulate the body's natural defenses to heal. They work naturally within the body and have no side effects.

Workshops

Although 64 of the 67 credits necessary to obtain the Master-Herbalist diploma can be completed

entirely by correspondence, as outlined above, the remaining three credits (= 60 hrs) need to be

fulfilled via workshops. Said workshops can either be those conducted by MWSHS (Midwest School of

Herbal Studies) or by other qualified presenters, with no specification on where they are held.

Moreover, not only can they can be obtained at any time from the date of entrance into the M.H.

program, but even qualifying workshops taken up to five years prior to entrance into the M.H. program

may be applicable. However, any and all workshops must be approved by MWSHS and spread out

among several categories, as outlined below:

(1) 1 CREDIT (20 HOURS) MINIMUM AND 2 CREDITS (4O HOURS) MAXIMUM for Holistic

Assessment Skills, such as: muscle testing, iridology, scleral interpretation, tongue assessment, pulse

assessment, physiognomy (face assessment), or other physical assessment.

Blood Spot Testing Blood Spot testing is the future of blood testing. The process requires only blood from a

nearly painless finger prick and several tests can be run from a single sample. Blood spot

Saliva Testing Saliva testing is a convenient, inexpensive, and above all, accurate means of testing steroid

hormones. Scientific studies have shown a strong correlation between steroid hormone levels

in saliva and the amount of hormone in the blood that is active or “bioavailable.” It is this

fraction of total hormone that is free to enter the target tissues in the brain, uterus, skin, and

breasts.

Saliva testing can be done anywhere anytime. Testing that relies on blood drawn in the

doctor‟s office makes it harder to obtain samples at specific times (such as in the early

Herbal medicine, also called botanical medicine or phytomedicine, refers to the use of any

plant's seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes. Long practiced

outside of conventional medicine, herbalism is becoming more mainstream as up-to-date

analysis and research show their value in the treatment and prevention of disease.

Plants had been used for medicinal purposes long before recorded history. Ancient Chinese

and Egyptian papyrus writings describe medicinal plant uses. Indigenous cultures (e.g.,

African and Native American) used herbs in their healing rituals, while others developed

traditional medical systems (e.g., Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine) in which

herbal therapies were used systematically. Scientists found that people in different parts of

the globe tended to use the same or similar plants for the same purposes.

In the early 19th century, when methods of chemical analysis first became available,

scientists began extracting and modifying the active ingredients from plants. Later, chemists

began making their own version of plant compounds, beginning the transition from raw herbs

to synthetic pharmaceuticals. Over time, the use of herbal medicines declined in favor of

pharmaceuticals.

Recently, the World Health Organization estimated that 80% of people worldwide rely on

herbal medicines for some aspect of their primary healthcare. In the last twenty years in the

United States, through increasing public dissatisfaction with the cost of prescription

medications, and an interest in returning to natural or organic remedies, has led to an increase

in the use of herbal medicines. In Germany, roughly 600 to 700 plant-based medicines are

available and are prescribed by approximately 70% of German physicians. One-third to one-

half of Americans use herbs.

Herbalists, chiropractors, pharmacists, natural medicine practitioners, nurse practitioners,

naturopathic physicians, and practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine all use herbs to

treat illness. The Botanical Medicine Certificate program is an introduction to herbal

medicine. AIM offers two follow-up programs so that you can continue on your journey to

becoming a registered master herbalist; the Western Herbalist Certificate Program and the

Master Herbalist. These programs are all presented by Matthew Alfs, M.H., R.H. (AHG).

Matthew Alfs, M. H., R.H. (A.H.G.) is one of

Homotoxicology is the study of the human reaction to

toxins (both endo and exotoxins). Dr. Reckeweg started

with the principles of classical Homoeopathy and

integrated them with new discoveries in biochemistry and

embryology that had been made by the 1940‟s.

Homotoxicology sees disease as the result of the body's

attempt to heal itself. Toxins are either created in the human

organism or are exogenous, and all the symptoms of illness are

the result of defensive effort of organism in order to eliminate

the toxins. In Homotoxicology, virtually all symptoms of

illness are regarded as a manifestation of the body‟s attempts to

degenerative disease and ultimately, to cancer.

Symptom Solutions Health Analysis Questionnaire &

Certificate Program

The Symptom Solutions® questionnaire is a unique tool which can be used to find the

underlying cause of health problems, get a new perspective on a difficult case, monitor

response to interventions and evaluate shifts in the system. The questionnaire is completed by

the patient and entered into a computer system. An analysis is made of symptoms both past

and present then a report is generated showing what underlying system disturbances create

Low Level Lasers

Low level laser therapy is the application of laser light over injuries and lesions to

stimulate healing within those tissues. Lasers are best known for their ability to cut,

but do NOT confuse Low Level Lasers with cutting or high-powered lasers! Low

Level Lasers, under various names such as cold laser, soft laser, biostimulating laser,

photo stimulation diodes (and many others) have been used for over 30 years in many

countries as therapeutic energy to bring about favorable biological effects in both

animals and humans.

How Does Low Level Laser Therapy (LLT)Work?

Laser irradiation of tissue cultures has shown that units of light energy

(photons) are absorbed by enzymes which react to light within the cell. Visible

red light is absorbed within the mitochondria, and the infrared light is absorbed

at the cell membrane.

In a mammalian cell, this results in a change in membrane permeability,

increased ATP levels and increased DNA production. The photons picked up

by the cell membrane result in improved membrane stability and increased

activity of the ATP-dependent Na/K pump. Because cell metabolism is

influenced by Na/K movement across the membrane, increasing the gradient

will affect the flow of ions and hence the overall metabolism of the cell.

On a tissue level, it has been shown that irradiation by laser light results in

increased collagen and epithelial production and production of new capillaries

and an increase in density of the capillary bed.

Reductions in scar tissue formation and keloid adhesions also occur. A

reduction of pain and inflammation results from this treatment, as does the

stimulation of nerve regeneration, muscle relaxation and atonicity (lack of

muscle tone). LLT may also help increase the immune system response.

Matthew Alfs, M. H., R.H. (A.H.G.) is one of only 200 herbal clinicians in North America
