The Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia and the education system (1)
• The Catalan Statute of Autonomy of 1979 establishes that the Government’s Education Department is responsible for the educational system administration.
• In 2006 the new Catalan Statute of Autonomy is approved which specifies the exclusive Catalan competences in education and those that are shared with the State government.

Examples of exclusive competences:
1. Establishment of the educative contents of the first cycle of infant education (0-3 years old)
2. Creation and organization of state schools3. Inspection, education system internal evaluation,
innovation, investigation and educational experimentation
4. Continuous teacher training and educative services

Examples of shared competence:
1. General curricular organization:– Spanish state: 55% of the general curriculum – 45% of the curriculum set by the Catalan
Government

According to the law:
“The Catalan language shall normally be used as the vehicle for learning and non-university teaching.”

•Catalan is used throughout all the educational period.
•Catalan is used in the schooling area because a language that is not used can not be learned.
• We take into account and valorise the different languages and cultures of the students’ families because the roots are important and help us to enrich us as a society.
•School ensures the teaching/learning of the Catalan language, of the Spanish language, and, at least, of a foreign language.
