Once you stop to look for it, you’ll find so many ways to learn about numbers, shapes, and patterns when you’re dancing, playing, jumping, walking, and moving together. Here are some ideas to get you started. MATH IS EVERYWHERE SHAPES & MOVEMENT SCAVENGER HUNT! Pick a couple of shapes familiar to your child. Together, assign a movement to each shape. Example: circle = twirl Then go on a shapes scavenger hunt! Every time you see a shape, do the movement together! Example: Every time you see a circle, twirl! = MATCHING SHAPES Place some shapes in a small bag. Shapes can be from another game or toy, or simply drawn on pieces of paper. At the end of the room, draw the shapes on a piece of paper, and place on the floor or table. Invite your child to select a shape from the bag and find the matching shape at the other end of the room. Can you count the shapes together? MOVE TO LEARN YOGA! Math is everywhere! Even in simple yoga movements. On the next few cards are some poses you can try! 1) What shapes do you see? 2) What other shapes can you make with your body? BEAN BAG TOSS Grab a bean bag, or something small and safe to toss. Start a small distance away from each other. Toss the bean bag back and forth. When you both catch the bean bag, take one step back. How many times can you catch the bean bag in a row? MUSIC AND MATH Play some music and start moving. Then move like you’re heavy, and move like your’re light. Or when the music stops, FREEZE, MELT to the ground like warm ice cream, or make your arms, legs, or bodies into a SHAPE. MOVEMENT DICE Grab a pair of dice. Then assign a movement to each number. Example: 1 = star jump 2 = touch your toes 3 = wiggle your fingers Roll the dice and get moving! MAKE YOUR OWN MOVEMENT DICE Materials: - 2 tissue boxes or small square shaped box - Kraft or wrapping paper - Tape or Glue - Markers or crayons Instructions: - Cover both boxes in paper - Draw a movement on each side of one dice - Draw numbers 1-6 on the sides of the other dice - Roll both dice and get moving!
