Dear Friends in Christ,

New Years’ Day is the time for resolutions. Most of them last about as long as it takes to forget about them.

I would like to suggest that, as a parish, we all consider one practical resolution for our spiritual lives. St Paul

commands all Christians in 1 Thessalonians 5.17, pray without ceasing. But, how are we to do that exact-

ly? How can we pray all day long every day and still cook and clean, go to work and the gym, hang out with

friends and develop our intellectual lives? Are we all supposed to be in either Mass or Adoration all the

time?

The Church has always had a wonderful spiritual practice that allows us to fulfill this command of the Apostle

to pray and connect with Jesus. From the beginning, Christians have gathered to offer psalms, hymns and

spiritual canticles, to prayerfully read the Bible and the Church Fathers: sometimes privately, sometimes to-

gether in community. The Church’s public worship, the sacred liturgy, extends forth from the Mass in a

powerful way to sanctify the entire day by interrupting the day with prayer. The Liturgy of the Hours, also

known as the Divine Office, is the chief way the Church sanctifies time during the day. She has develop vari-

ous forms of this prayer throughout the ages.

I would like to encourage you to consider making the Liturgy of the Hours the center of your prayer life.

Technology has made it easier than ever! There are a number of apps for smart phones such as IBreviary,

BrevMeum and Laudate. And, there are websites like www.divineoffice.org, where you can pray the Liturgy

of the Hours, if you do not want to buy a physical edition of either Christian Prayer, an abridged edition in

one volume, or the four volume Liturgy of the Hours.

Try praying Night Prayer together as a family before going to bed, or Morning Prayer together as a couple.

There are all kinds of ways to pray the Divine Office, but once you make it the foundation of your prayer

life, you will never regret it!

The “chalking of the door” or “blessing of the door-way” on the Feast of the Epiphany is a popular pious custom throughout the Christian world. Family andfriends gather at the main entrances to their homes and ask God’s blessing on their dwellings, on all who live or visit there, and protection from all evil spirits.

With blessed chalk (on the credenzas in the Nar-thex), an inscription is written on the lintel above the front door. It is made with chalk, a product of clay, to recall the human nature taken by God’s eternal Word in the Mystery of the Incarnation. The inscrip-tion is made above the door so that all who enter and depart this year may enjoy God’s blessing. The four digits designating the new year appear at the beginning and end of the line, representing an annual renewal of God’s blessing.

The letters have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the Magi: Caspar, Melchi-or and Balthasar. These initials over the doorway serve to remind us of Who the Magi adored in the manger, and they remind us to pay the Christ Child homage. The letters also abbreviate the Latin words “Christmas Mansionem Benedicat” (may Christ bless this house). The crosses represent Christ, whom we invoke, and the saintliness of the Magi who traveled from afar to adore the newborn king.

Blessing & Prayer: All: All make the sign of the crossLeader: Peace be to this house and to all who dwell here in the name of the Lord. All: Blessed be God forever.Read: John 1:1-14 and then PRAY together the Our Father.Take the blessed chalk and write the following in-scription above the main entrance door:

20+C+M+B+20All: Lord God of Heaven and earth, you revealed your only begotten Son to every nation by the guid-ance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. May we be blessed with health, goodness of heart, gentleness and the keeping of your law. Fill us with the light of Christ, that our love for each other may go out to all. Father, bless all who gather here. Send your holy angel to defend us and fill with grace all who enter this door. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Happenings & Needs

We're dreaming of Building a Bright Future at

Prince of Peace Catholic School!

Private schools across the country depend on the

generosity of donors to maintain competitive tuition

rates while advancing their respective missions. This

year, tuition and fees cover approximately 81% of the

education cost per student. The remaining 19%

comes from fundraising efforts. Our major fundrais-

ing efforts are through the Annual Fund and POPArt

Party (annual gala).

The Annual Fund represents a sum of money donat-

ed to the school by its constituents that provides es-

sential support for daily needs. Beyond supporting

our operating budget, we also have a wish list that

includes necessary upgrades to safety and technolo-

gy, improvements to our online and classroom cur-

riculum, a butterfly habitat, and more. With your

help, it is our goal this year to raise $45,000 and

achieve 100% participation, regardless of the size of

gift, across families, faculty and staff. With 100% par-

ticipation, we're best able to apply for grants and

matching gifts. To that end, every gift of any size mat-

ters! Students, teachers, faculty, and staff are all

blessed by your generosity.

Donors are recognized at the level of their Annual

Fund giving. Prince of Peace Catholic School is a qual-

ified non-profit under IRS code 501c3. A tax receipt

will be provided upon receipt of your donation.
