Bollinger Shipyards Inc., Lockport,La., recently completed the163'6"36'11'6" supply boat Capt.

Rudy for Seahorse Marine. The new

    design, a collaboration between the

    shipyard and Phillip Plaisance, president

    of Lockport-based Seahorse Marine, is

    an extension of Bollingers steel-hulled

    145' mini-supply vessel design. Its

being touted as a mega mini-supply

    boat.

Ive had a lot of success with ves-

sels from Bollinger, and I have influ-enced the various designs by working

with Bollinger to get exactly the vessel

I need to take care of my customers

    needs, said Plaisance.

The vessel can carry 57,200 gals. of

fuel oil, 44,600 gals. methanol and

1,230 bbls. of liquid mud. The boat can

pump drill water and lube oil up to 150'

at a rate of 200 gpm.

    The rear cargo deck measures

110'30' and can haul up to 385 LT of

    freight.

Main propulsion comes from twinCummins KTA38-MO diesel engines,

each producing 750 hp at 1,600 rpm.

The diesels are connected to Bollinger

    72"57" nibral propellers on 6"

Aquamet 17 shafts through Twin Disc

    MG-5301 marine gears with 4.96:1

    reduction ratios.

    For added maneuverability around

offshore structures, the OSV was fit-

    ted with a 270-hp Schottel

    bowthruster, driven by a

    Cummins N14 diesel.Ships service power

    comes from two Cummins

    6CTA8.3-G gensets, generat-

    ing 99kw of electricity each.

    The Capt. Rudy is anoth-

    er example of Bollingers

    dedication to working with

    the customer, ensuring that

    the operator gets the quality

vessel that they specd out, at

    the agreed price, and deliv-

    ered on time, said Plaisance.

Bollinger also announced that it has

signed an agreement to build another

    245-class liftboat for Golden Meadow,

    La.-based Montco Offshore Inc. The

137'6"92'13' Kayd will be a sister-

ship to the liftboat Myrtle, which

Bollinger delivered to Montco in 2002.

The basic difference between the two

liftboats will be the lifting capacity of the

three cranes on the Kayd. The cranes,

    manufactured by Titan Industries, will

    include a port bow-mounted primary

crane with a 110' lattice boom rated for

175 tons, a starboard bow telescoping

auxiliary crane rated for 40 tons with a

boom that extends from 50' to 70', and a

70' box boom crane mounted on the star-

board stern rated for 25 tons for transfer

of personnel, cargo, and/or fluids with-

out interfering with other work being

    done by the liftboat.

Equipped with 245' legs, the self-pro-pelled floating platform will have the

ability to work in water depths up to 180'.

    The Hydraquip jacking system will

    use hydraulic and computer technology

to accurately control the leg position.

    The programmable logic controller will

provide all jacking system logic, safety

    interlocks, leg positions and alarm

    monitoring.

    All jacking system pressures, system

    status, temperatures, alarms, and oper-

ation manual will be displayed on a liq-

    uid crystal plasma touch screen.

The Kayd will be equipped with

    40'

16' pads, larger than those on otherliftboats, to provide for greater bottom

stability and deck loads. It will also be

able to jack with a full pre-load and its

pre-load system has quick acting stain-

less steel dump valves to discharge

    water faster.

The open deck will measure 6,000

sq. ft. The three 72"-dia. legs will be

constructed of 1 1/2" wall thickness

    high-strength steel.

    Two Caterpillar 3512 diesels devel-

oping a total of 3,000 hp will handle the

    vessels main propulsion duties. The

Cats will drive Berg controllable pitch

    propellers through Reintjes reduction

    gears.

Ships service power will be the

    responsibility of twin 190kw genera-

tors driven by Caterpillar 3306 diesels.

The liftboats galley will serve 22 per

seating, and its 13 staterooms will have

48 berths with four separate digital

satellite television systems piped to 12

    locations throughout the vessel.

The Kayd will be ABS Loadline,SOLAS/MARPOL classed and U.S.

    Coast Guard certified Subchapter L.

    Main Iron Works busy with

    new Bisso Z-drive tug

Houma, La.-based Main Iron WorksInc. is building a new

    100'38'13'6" Z-drive tug for Bisso

Towboat Co. Inc., New Orleans. The

steel-hulled Alma Swill be an almost

exact replica of the Cecelia B. Slatten,

a Z-drive tug Main Iron Works deliv-

ered to Bisso in May 1999. The onlydifferences will be a few minor changes

having to do with operational capabili-

    ties and crew comfort.

The Alma S will handle ship-assist

    duties involving mostly tankers and

bulk carriers on the Mississippi River.

    This will definitely improve our

fleet, said Scott Slatten, whose family

owns the business that is entering its

115th year of operation. Weve want-

ed to build this tug for three years. But

right after we took delivery of the

    Cecelia, traffic plummeted on the

Mississippi. Its back now, so were

    building this boat.

The tugs main propulsion will come

    from two EPA-compliant EMD 16-

    645E6 diesels, producing 2,150 hp

each at 900 rpm. The mains will propel

    Ulstein Aquamaster US2001 Z-drives,

    which will feature 90.5"-dia. stainless-

steel props in Kort nozzles. TheAlma S

will have a bollard pull of 59 tons.

On deck will be a Markey DYSF-42

hydraulic bow winch, carrying 500' of8" circumference plasma line and a

100-ton quick release tow hook from

    Washington Chain & Supply, Seattle.

Ships service power will be the

    responsibility of two John Deere

    gensets, sparking 100kw of electrical

    power each.

Tankage will include 43,000 gals. of

diesel, 11,000 gals. potable water and

    1,800 gals. lube and

    hydraulic oil.

    The electronicssuite will feature a

    Simrad GPS/autopi-

    lot and Furuno radar

    and AIS units. Other

    equipment aboard

    will include a 1,000-

    gpm firefighting

    system, a Heli-Sep

    U.S. Coast Guard-

    approved oil/water

    separator, and an

    Owens Kleen Tank

    sewage treatment plant.

    The ABS International Loadline-

classed tug will join Bissos ship-assist

    fleet in December.

    [Cecelia B. Slatten] is unbelievable,

said Slatten. We havent had one day ofdowntime other than for inspections

since we got her. Its been a very pleas-

    ant experience. K. Hocke

    Washburn & Doughty

    delivers 15th 92' Z-drive

Providence (R.I.) Steamboat Co. tookdelivery of its first Z-drive tug inearly December when the 92'32'

Rainbow left the East Boothbay, Maine,

boatyard of Washburn & Doughty and

    headed south to Rhode Islands

    Narragansett Bay.

Thats the 15th Z-drive tug that

Washburn & Doughty has built from

    our 92-foot design, said Katie

    Doughty, marketing manager at

    Washburn & Doughty.

Earlier this fall, as theRainbow was

nearing completion, only one other tug

was under construction, and it looked

like Washburn & Doughty might be in

for a lean period. But it didnt take long

for the boatbuilding slots to fill up, andnow four tugs are under construction.

A 92-footer is going to Marine

Towing of Tampa, Tampa, Fla. The boat

should be completed and headed south

this summer. She will be pretty much

the same boat as theIndependent, said

    Doughty. The $5 millionIndependentis

a 92-footer owned by Marine Towing

that was delivered in the spring of 2004.

The tug company was formed about five

years ago and operates four tugs.

Another 92-footer is going to MoranTowing Corp., Greenwich, Conn. Work

has just started on the boat, and when it

is completed it will be the 11th 92-foot

tug built by Washburn & Doughty for

    Moran Towing.

It had been rumored for some time

that Washburn & Doughty had a slightly

larger tug design in the works. Now it

turns out that a pair of 98-footers is

being built for ship-assist work for LNG

tankers. One is going to Moran Towing

and the other is for Crescent Towing,

    BissoTowboat

100' Z-drive tug will look just like its sister delivered in 1999.

Graham Gulf Inc., a Gulf of Mexico OSV operatorbased in Bayou La Batre, Ala., added its first waterjet-powered crew/supplier to its fleet in January. Built by sis-

    ter-company C&G Boatworks, Mobile, Ala., the 155'

29'Gulf Honoris pushed by a combination of four Cummins

    KTA38 M2s, each producing 1,350 hp at 1,900 rpm for a

total of 5,400 hp, and a quartet of Hamilton 721 waterjets

that give the new crewboat a design speed of 28 knots. A

Cummins 6BTA engine drives a 1,000-gpm fire monitor as

well as providing hydraulics for a 150-hp bowthruster. The

addition of a 10' extension over the transom provides extra

deck space and protects the waterjets. The 98'25' aft deck

is capable of 200 tons of cargo. Tankage on the Gulf Honorincludes 776 gals. of potable water; 32,128 gals. fresh

water; 20,000 gals. fuel; 1,800 gals. dispersant; and two

2,256-gal. tanks for recovered oil. Theres seating for 80

passengers. During sea trials, the boat achieved 30 knots

running light and 22 knots with 200 tons of deck cargo.

Moose Boats, Petaluma, Calif., recently announced a new

model in its line of aluminum catamarans. The M2 is pow-

ered by twin 380-hp QSB5.9 Cummins turbo diesels with

Twin Disc MG-5075 gears turning a pair of Hamilton HJ292

    According to

    the company,

    the M2 canattain a top

    speed of over

    35 knots, cruise

    at almost 30

    knots, come to

    a full-speed

    stop in two

    boat lengths,

and turn on a dime. The M2 evolved from the 340C patrol

boat that Moose Boats has been building for the U.S. Navy.

In December, the state of Alaska officially named its sec-

ond fast vehicle ferry, the Chenega, during a ceremony at
