Basic Offensive PhilosophyDO A FEW THINGS WELLRun game consists of wide/inside zone and a drawNOT ENOUGH TIME TO PRACTICE EVERYTHING14 Core runs7 Wide Zone Core Runs (Strong, Weak, Box, Open, Force, Read, Home)6 Tight Zone Runs (Strong, Weak, Box, Open, Read, Home)DrawThrowing GameKeepers/NakedsFull Flow PlayactionQuicksDropback (5 step)Screens

HAVE AN OFFENSE, NOT A COLLECTION OF PLAYSTENDENCIESWHO CARES IF THEY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING? THEY HAVE TO STOP US.Try to achieve a run/pass balance while taking what the defense gives youEfficiency in run and passEach rushing attempt must be efficient5 yards, first down, touchdown (back must average 5 yards per carry)youll get what you demandVs. Pass as a yes/no Football is a game of fundamentals and techniques. MotivationKEEP IT SIMPLE. If you understand something it is simple, PLAYERS MUST PLAY FAST.Confidence vs. Pressure/Apprehension

Basic Offensive Philosophy

REPITITION CREATES CONFIDENCE, CONFIDENCE CREATES OPTIMISM Mike Murphy (former Indianapolis Colts DC)

Basic Run Game Philosophy2 MAJOR GOALSEliminate negative playsAllows us to run or throw on every downKeeps us out of 3rd and longMaximize explosive runs (20+ plays) Everyone must be involved (QB keepers, WRs blocking, strikes/bubbles, etc.)Develop Pride as an offensive unit in explosives

Advantages of Zone BlockingAllows you to streamline teaching and focus on specific techniques/fine pointsPlay can be run out of multiple formations and multiple schemes to handle what the defense is giving youIt is ouropen field running gameshort yardage running gameblackzone (coming out) running gameredzone/goalline running gameRelatively few number of core running plays allows young players to play sooner and your backups to be more effective

Basic Elements of the Wide Zone PlayTailback at 7 yards deepDrop step and run course at the butt of the Tight End or the imaginary Tight End (to the open side)Must be ready to receive the ball and make read by the third stepBack must read 1st down lineman on the LOS to the 2nd down lineman outside inIf the EMOL goes ingo out and stay out (bounce read)If the EMOL goes out, go inside and get your eyes to the 2nd down lineman.CoachesREMEMBER THE 5 YARD RULE

Basic Elements of the Wide Zone PlayQuarterbackQUARTERBACKS KEEPER FAKE IS ESSENTIAL TO MAKE THIS PLAY WORKQuarterback is responsible for holding the backside of the defense The quarterback has to keep you out of negative playsparticularly in one back (audibles, bubbles/strikes)Quarterback must drive the ball back as deep as he can to running back and snap out into keeper fake (5 and 7)You must run keepers and nakeds frequently to slow down pursuit and keep the defense in a bindHolding backside pursuit with keepers allows the explosives to occur

Basic Elements of the Wide Zone PlayOffensive line is always responsible for the four down to MikeSTRONGTE is responsible for #3 to his sideHOMEStrong to either side (TE has #3)WEAKH or F is responsible for #3 to his sideBOX (3x1)H is responsible for the man over him who becomes #4. Center alert for possible re-mike.FORCEF is responsible for #4 in Force. Center alert for possible re-mike

Offensive LineCharacteristics of Castle LinemanTough, Gritty, Unselfish kidsLean, WE DONT WANT FAT KIDS!!!!CenterSmart kid (look for 4.0s!), toughdoesnt necessarily have to be your best athleteDesignates the MLB, sets front and makes primary combination callsGuardsHeight is not as important as it is with tacklesMust be tough, physical playersProbably look more like the middle linebackers or fullbacks of yesteryearTacklesHeight and leverage are more important because of their role in pass protectionAthleticism is a mustmore important than brute strength

Offensive Line TechniqueBasic Two Man CombinationsCovered with HelpEyes to outside armpit, use rip arm to midlineBlock outside half of the Down defenderGet second step to crotch, drive outside half of down defenderAdjacent lineman will try to push him over into your lap

UncoveredDrop step using a helmet to helmet landmark, knock him outResponsible for physically attacking the inside half of the down defenderPush defender into the lap of the covered player and be ready to climb to the linebackerKeep your eyes on the linebacker

Covered without helpEyes to outside armpit, CLUB ARM techniqueMove the defender with your helmetMust be more conservative, alert for spike/stickIf you get an inside stunt, your CLUB ARM becomes a CATCH ARMCatch him and ride him downBacksideCut off/combination block based on centers combination call (possible cut)Man, backside slip, CUT if man is inside leverage

Backside receivers work to cutoff supportUse of bubbles and strikes are essential to control support and keep the box clean3 step readRun off vs. ManReceivers are the most crucial element in creating explosive runs
