The Casting Process

Skillful casting and high-caliber performances are essential in making a good film.

THE CASTING PROCESS

• Read and analyze the script.

•  Breakdown each speaking role into concise, descriptive profiles.

This is a sample of a casting breakdown. The director and producer are usually the ones to write up these role descriptions. It is then sent out to talent agents. They will check to see if any of their clients fit the description. The agents will then send head shots of their clients to the casting director of the movie in the hopes their clients will get called in for an audition.

• The producer and casting director will also contact specific actors who meet the breakdown descriptions and arrange for auditions.

• "HOUSE" audition tape

• The casting director and producer and director hold auditions,taping each actor's performance for later review.

• Review auditions.

• Notify actors who make it through the first round of auditions and arrange for "callback" auditions.

• Hold callback auditions, probably taping each actor's performance for later review by the casting director, producer, director, and, as for a commercial, advertising agency people and their client representatives, or for a feature film, studio representatives.

• Repeat the above process until all the speaking roles are cast to everyone's satisfaction.
