Aims: The aims of this Internet Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) are:

1. To ensure that pupils will benefit from the learning opportunities offered by the school’s internet resources in a safe and effective manner.

2. To ensure that all parties who use the internet at Castaheany Educate National School are aware of the sanctions that will occur in the event that the internet is not used appropriately. Internet use and access is considered a school resource and privilege. If the school AUP is not adhered to this privilege may be withdrawn and appropriate sanctions, in line with our Code of Good Behaviour will be imposed.

This Acceptable Use Policy applies to:

● Pupils who have access to and are users of the internet in Castaheany Educate Together National School.

● Members of staff, volunteers, parents, carers and others who access the internet in Castaheany Educate Together National School.

Overview: When using the internet, pupils, parents, staff and internet users of the CETNS network are expected to:

● Following the AUP. ● Treat others with respect at all times. ● Not undertake any actions that may bring the school into disrepute. ● Respect the right to privacy of all other members of the school community. ● Respect copyright and acknowledge creators when using online content and resources.

Misuse of the internet may result in disciplinary action, including written warnings, withdrawal of access privileges, detention and, in extreme cases, suspension or expulsion. The school also reserves the right to report any illegal activities to the appropriate authorities. Any disciplinary action will be in line with our Code of Good Behaviour. Castaheany Educate Together National School will deal with incidents that take place outside the school that impact on the wellbeing of pupils or staff under this policy and associated codes of behaviour and anti-bullying policies. In such cases Castaheany Educate Together National School will, where known, inform parents/carers of incidents of inappropriate online behaviour that take place out of school and impose the appropriate sanctions. It is the responsibility of the parent/ guardian to work in partnership with the school to ensure that the incident is resolved to the best of our abilities. School Safety and Usage Strategies: Castaheany Educate Together National School implements the following strategies on promoting safer use of the internet:

● Pupils will be provided with education in the area of internet safety as part of our implementation of the SPHE curriculum.

● Teachers will be provided with opportunities to take part in continuing professional development in the area of internet safety.

● Castaheany Educate Together National School participates in Safer Internet Week activities to promote safer more effective use of the internet.

● Rules detailing the safe use of devices, search engines and related activities are provided to all staff and pupils and displayed in the computer room.

● Pupils are advised to use the SMART guidelines when accessing the internet. These guidelines will be taught to all pupils using age appropriate activities through the SPHE programme, during Internet Safety Week and through the regular use of IT devices/ resources.

● Pupils must only access sites which have been approved by their teacher or member of Senior Management. Teacher will only use sites which are in line with the schools Data Protection policy.

● Students must only use the internet when supervised by a staff member. ● Senior Management continuously obtains information, support and advice from PDST and

Webwise to ensure that all procedures in this policy are best practice and in line with PDST safe internet use guidelines.

This policy is also closely linked with the following school policies:

● Child Protection Policy ● Code of Good Behaviour ● Stay Safe Programme (SPHE) ● Anti-Bullying Policy

● Mobile Phone Policy ● Data Protection Policy

Development & Review: This policy and its implementation will be reviewed annually by the following stakeholders:

● Board of Management and all staff. This policy has been developed in consultation with groups including: Principal, Deputy Principal, teachers, pupils, parents/carers, and representatives of the Board of Management. The school will monitor the impact of the policy using:

● Surveys and/or questionnaires of pupils, parents, and teaching staff.

● Should serious online safety incidents take place, a member a school management should be informed and a log will be kept of the incident. This log will be stored in the Principal’s office and if deemed appropriate it will also be discussed at a BOM meeting and if necessary the policy will be reviewed.

Implementation: The implementation of this Internet Acceptable Use policy will be monitored by the teaching staff of Castaheany Educate Together National School. It is the responsibility of staff members to ensure that this policy is followed and any incidents reported in a timely manner to the Management Team. Definitions:

Personal Data means data relating to a living individual who is or can be identified either from the data or from the data in conjunction with other information that is in, or is likely to come into, the possession of the Data Controller i.e. the school.

Content Filtering Castaheany Educate Together National School has chosen to implement the following levels on content filtering on the Schools Broadband Network. Pupils- Level 3:

● Level 3: This level allows access to millions of websites including games but blocks YouTube, and blocks access to websites belonging to the personal websites category and websites such as Facebook belonging to the Social Networking category.

Staff & Guests: Open

● This level allows access to a wide range (i.e. millions) of educational and other websites These sites can be accessed and used by staff and guests only. Pupils will not have individual access to this level of filtering.

Guests will only be provided with the password in the event of a function or activity which requires the guest to partake in a school related activity. This password will be changed regularly by the IT post holder. Guests are asked to not share this password with others. If a guest to the school requests the Wi-Fi password they should be directed to the school secretary or a member of the Senior Management Team. Staff, pupils or guests taking steps to by-pass the content filter by using proxy sites or other means may be subject to appropriate disciplinary action, including written warnings, withdrawal of access privileges, detention and, in extreme cases, suspension or expulsion.

Web Browsing and Downloading Student Guidelines

● Pupils will not intentionally visit internet sites that contain obscene, illegal, hateful or

otherwise objectionable materials.

● Pupils will report accidental accessing of inappropriate materials in school to their teacher.

● Pupils will use the school’s internet connection only for educational and career development activities.

● Pupils will not engage in online activities such as uploading or downloading large files that

result in heavy network traffic which impairs the service for other internet users.

● Pupils will not download or view any material that is illegal, obscene, and defamatory or that is intended to annoy or intimidate another person.

● Pupils will not copy information from the internet without acknowledging the creator and

referencing the source of the content.

● Pupils and staff will be aware that any usage, including distributing or receiving information, school-related or personal, may be monitored for unusual activity, security and/or network management reasons.

● Use of file sharing and torrent sites is allowed with staff permission.

● Pupils and staff are encouraged to use child friendly search engines when online. Children

are informed of these appropriate search engines and these are displayed in the library and on the laptop trolley.

Email and Messaging

● The use of personal email accounts is allowed at certain times at Castaheany Educate

Together National School.

● All classes have been provided with a class email address. In the event that a website requires a specific email address to access an educational resource this address may be used. Alternatively the teacher may use their own school address if deemed more suitable. Class email addresses are stored on the school server for staff access only. Students will not be provided with the password at any point but may be given the address if needed.

● If deemed necessary, the class teacher may set up individual email accounts for pupils.

Permission must be sought from Senior Management before doing this.

● These email accounts will be managed by the teacher and the passwords will be stored by the classroom teacher. These email addresses will be used for specific school purposes and must not be used for the pupils personal use.

● Pupils should not under any circumstances share their email account login details with other

pupils.

● Pupils should not use school email accounts to register for online services such as social networking services, apps, and games.

● Pupils will use approved class email accounts only under supervision by or permission from

a teacher.

● Pupils should be aware that school email communications are monitored.

● Pupils will not send any material that is illegal, obscene, and defamatory or that is intended to annoy or intimidate another person.

● Pupils should immediately report the receipt of any communication that makes them feel

uncomfortable is offensive, discriminatory, threatening or bullying in nature and must not respond to any such communication.

● Pupils should avoid opening emails that appear suspicious. If in doubt, pupils should ask

their teacher before opening emails from unknown senders.

Personal Devices/ Smart Devices Pupils using their own technology in school should follow the rules set out in this agreement, in the same way as if they were using school equipment. Personal devices are all devices which have access to the internet e.g. smart phones, smart watches, tablets, laptops etc. The following statements apply to the use of internet-enabled devices such as tablets, gaming devices, and digital music players in Castaheany Educate Together National School:

● Pupils do not have permission to use their own devices in school unless given permission by the Senior Management Team.

● Pupils are only allowed to use personal internet-enabled devices during lessons with expressed permission from teaching staff in consultation with the Senior Management Team.

● Pupils are not allowed to use personal internet-enabled devices during social time including break times and during after school activities which are on the school premises.

● Mobile phones must be handed to the teacher each morning and must not be switched back on until the child leaves the school grounds. Ref. Mobile Use Policy.

School Devices & Charging Trolleys

Student devices are available for staff to provide active, engaging, differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all of our students. Before staff and students begin to use the devices and charging trolley they must review the AUP policy in full. Locations of Devices & Charging Trolleys

The trolleys are located on each floor. They are labelled Junior & Senior. Both trolleys are locked for security. Staff will be informed of the location of the keys. It is the responsibility of the staff member to return the key after use to the assigned location.

Scheduling of Devices

Devices are available for teacher sign out using an online timetable.

Priority is given to Team Teaching time and this is placed on the online timetable in advance.

Additional slots available after TT can be booked using the online timetable.

Devices may be signed out in groups of 5 devices (for example a teacher may sign out 5 laptops only) or they may sign out the entire trolley.

Cart Access and Maintenance We must all work together to support continued access and proper working order of the devices.

Only teachers may remove devices from the trolleys/ move the trolley to a classroom. Students are not permitted to move charging trolley or remove devices due to health and safety concerns. Ref. below for distribution of devices once in the classroom.

The charging trolleys are locked with a key. Be sure to keep keys in a secure area while you are using the cart.

It is imperative that we all follow protocol at all times when using the laptops.

All maintenance issues must have sent to the IT post holder by email immediately after use. This must include the date/ time/laptop name/number and the name of the trolley in the work order.

Protocols and Rules of Use In addition to adhering to the following rules when using the charging trolleys, it is essential you become familiar with some of the technical aspects of the trolley and devices you will be using.

Students will be given guidance and support by the teacher on proper use and handling of the devices prior to using them.

All pupils will have completed some Internet Safety lessons before using the devices.

It is suggested that two pupils are trained in the distribution of laptops and this is their job on an ongoing basis.

All other pupils should be sitting down before the laptops are given to them at their desk.

All pens and other items which could be used to accidently damage the device should be removed from the students table before use.

There is to be no food or drink near the devices or trolleys.

If headphones and mice are being used, they must be used with care by all students.

Students should log off and then completely shut down the device before the students close them.

Students and teachers must return laptops to the corresponding numbered shelf in the cart.

Laptops should be plugged in while stored in the cart.

When the laptops are returned to the carts, the teacher must perform a visual check to see if all laptops are there.

Trolleys must be returned to their original location after use.

Only teachers may remove devices from the trolleys/ move the trolley to a classroom. Students are not permitted to do this due to health and safety concerns.

In the event a laptop is missing, you must notify your IT post holder immediately.

Social Media

The following statements apply to the use of messaging, blogging and video streaming services in Castaheany Educate Together National School (CETNS):

● Use of instant messaging services and apps including but not limited to Snapchat, WhatsApp, G Chat etc. are not allowed to be used by pupils while in school.

● Use of blogs such as Word Press, Tumblr etc. are allowed in school with express permission from teaching staff.

● Use of video streaming sites such as YouTube and Vimeo etc. are allowed at certain times

and when under the supervision of staff.

● CETNS staff, pupils or families must never use social media and the internet in any way to harass, insult, abuse or defame pupils, their family members, staff or other members of the school community.

● Staff and the school community must not discuss personal information about pupils, staff

and other members of the CETNS community on social media.

● Staff and pupils must not use their school email addresses for setting up personal social media accounts or to communicate through such media.

● Staff and pupils must not engage in activities involving social media which might bring

CETNS into disrepute. For example staff or pupils must never like or post comments, photos or videos online which go against our school’s ethos of respect and inclusion.

● Staff, pupils or other members of the school community must not represent their personal

views as those of CETNS on any social medium e.g. Facebook, online discussion groups etc.

Cyberbullying Engaging in online activities with the intention to harm, harass, or embarrass another pupil or member of staff is an unacceptable and absolutely prohibited behaviour, with serious consequences and sanctions for those involved. Sanctions include but are not limited to suspension and school expulsion. When using the internet pupils, parents and staff are expected to treat others with respect at all times. The prevention of cyberbullying is an integral part of the anti-bullying policy of our school. Measures are taken to ensure that staff and pupils are aware that cyberbullying is defined as unwanted negative behaviour, verbal, psychological or physical, conducted by an individual or group against another person (or persons) which may or may not be repeated. This definition includes cyber-bullying even when it happens outside the school. Isolated or once-off incidents of intentional negative behaviour, including a once-off offensive or hurtful text message or other private messaging, fall within the definition of bullying and will be dealt with, as appropriate, in accordance with the school’s Code of Good Behaviour. Due to the nature of these incidents, which have the ability/ potential to be shared to multiple people/ sites/ apps, these incidents may be considered as repeated acts of bullying.

Images & Recordings

General Guidance: Outside School ● At Castaheany Educate Together National School we advise pupils that they must not take,

use, share, publish or distribute images of others without their permission. This included but is not limited to social media sites, WhatsApp groups, Snap Chat etc.

● In the event that pupils share images and the parties involved have not granted permission,

the school request that the parents of the parties involved contact the child's parents directly and request that the photograph be removed.

● Pupils must not share images, videos or other content online with the intention to harm

another member of the school community regardless of whether this happens in school or outside.

● Sharing explicit images and in particular explicit images of pupils and/or minors is an

unacceptable and absolutely prohibited behaviour, with serious consequences and sanctions for those involved. Sharing explicit images of other pupils automatically incurs suspension as a sanction.

School Guidance: In School

● While in school, pupils will not post or publish images of others without the specific permission of a teacher.

● Care should be taken by all members of the school community when taking photographic or

video images that pupils are appropriately dressed and are not participating in activities that might bring the individuals or the school into disrepute.

● It is the responsibility of the staff members who provides the photo/video to ensure that images are examined carefully before posting or publishing to ensure images in the background do not contain other children who do not have permission to appear or do not contain inappropriate content.

● Staff have permission to take photos or videos on school grounds and when participating in

school activities once care is taken that no harm is done to staff or pupils of Castaheany Educate Together National School. Only school cameras and devices should be used for this purpose.

● A teacher’s personal mobile phones should not be used. In the event that a personal phone needs to be used due to the unavailability of a school camera, that we request that the picture/ video be sent to the teachers school email account and image/recording deleted from the teachers personal device as soon as possible.

Parents & Guest Guidance:

● Parents are requested to sign a Conditions of School Use form on a yearly basis in relation to the taking, publishing and sharing of images which have been taken on school premises or during a school related activity. The following conditions are listed and must be signed by the parent.

Conditions of School Use

1. Photographs and recordings may be taken during school performances and public school events with the permission of school management / event coordinator (CETNS staff member).

2. No photographs and recording may be taken of the children while in class or in the yard without the permission of school management or class teacher.

3. As the child’s parents/guardian, we agree that if we take photographs or video recordings of our child/ren which include other pupils, we will use these for personal and family use only and these images which contain other children will not be distributed.

4. I/we understand that where consent has not been obtained from the other parents for any other use, we would be in breach of the Data Protection Act 1998 if we used our recordings for any wider purpose.

5. It is your responsibility to let us know if you want to withdraw or change your agreement at any time. This consent lasts for the duration of the full school year and will be refreshed annually during your child’s time at CETNS.

Permission: Publishing of Images & Recordings

● Parents are requested to sign a Using Images / Recording of children consent form each year. Details of which are included below.

● It is the responsibility of the class teacher to be aware of who does not have permission for their photograph to be used and should inform the relevant people when needed.

● Staff may take photographs/ recording of the children. To comply with current data protection laws, we need your permission before we publish photographs or recordings of your child.

● Staff may use these photographs or video recordings for noting/ celebrating progress and achievements or other educational purposes. We may use these images/ recordings on the school’s website or in other printed publications. Please note that our school website can be viewed throughout the world and not just in Ireland.

● From time to time, our school may be involved with the media, who will take photographs or film footage of a visiting dignitary or other high profile event which the children attend/partake in. Students will often appear in these images, which may appear in local or national newspapers, websites or on televised news programmes.

● We, the school, will not use the personal details or full names (which means first name and surname) of any child in a photographic image on video, on our website, in our school prospectus or in any of our other printed publications. We will not include personal e-mail or postal addresses, or telephone or fax numbers on video, on our website, in our school prospectus or in other printed publications.

● If we use photographs of individual pupils, we will not use the name of that child in the accompanying text or photo caption, unless we have your specific separate agreement. If we name a pupil in the text, we will not use a photograph of that child to accompany the article. We may use group or class photographs or footage with very general labels, such as “a science lesson” or “Earth Day 2019”.

● We will only use images of pupils who are suitably dressed, to reduce the risk of such images being used inappropriately.

Websites and Online Applications: Use in School

● Parents are requested to sign a Use of Websites & Applications consent form each year. Details of which are included below.

● Staff will follow the procedures below and will ensure that the safety of the children when using online websites and applications remains a priority.

Use of Websites & Applications:

1. Staff will use websites and applications (apps) that are GDPR (EU), FERPA and/or COPPA (US) compliant when these websites or apps require the input of school or student information e.g. teacher email/ school address or school identifier. Ref. Appendix 2 for details on the above regulations. Ref. Appendix 2 for details on the above regulations.

2. Staff will not use any student’s personal data (ref. definition section) when using websites and apps. Other then what is noted in point 3 which details the use of a school identifier. Ref. below for a description of what CETNS consider to be personal information.

3. In the event that a student needs to be provided with an identifier on a website/ app, for a specific educational purpose, the following will be used:

a. Class colour/ year class started Junior Infants/ surname initial / first name initial 4. The above identifier will be used to ensure that it would be extremely difficult for anyone,

outside of the school staff to identify the child. In the event that a parent does not want an identifier of any kind to be used with educational websites or apps then the child will not be permitted to use this website or app.

5. Teachers will seek permission from school management, prior to using any website or app that requires the use of this identifier. This will be recorded and a detailed description of the website/ app and its educational purpose will be completed and kept on record by the school principal.

6. Parental permission will be sought from all parents when a child starts at CETNS and consent will be refreshed on a yearly basis. This permission will be in place throughout the year unless advised otherwise by the parent.

● Pupils may be given the opportunity to publish projects, artwork or school work on the internet in accordance with clear policies and approval processes regarding the content that can be loaded to the school’s website.

● The website will be regularly checked to ensure that there is no content that compromises

the safety, privacy, or reputation of students or staff.

● Webpages allowing comments or user-generated content will be moderated and checked

frequently by a member of staff to ensure that they do not contain any inappropriate or offensive content.

● In the event that offensive or inappropriate content is found the staff member will inform

Senior Management and the person will be reported to the relevant authorities e.g.An Garda Siochana, website admin etc.

● The publication of student work will be coordinated by a teacher and follow the clear

procedures outlined in this policy in relation to pupil anonymity.

● Castaheany Educate Together National School will use only digital photographs, audio or

video clips of focusing on group activities. Content focusing on individual students which include their names, will only be published on the school website with separate parental permission.

● Personal student information including home address, full name(first name only will be

used), age, DOB and contact details will not be published on Castaheany Educate Together National School web pages.

● The school will avoid publishing video or photographs which contain information about

where children will be on a particular date/ time e.g. will not publish that children will be attending a school tour on a particular date and time.

ICT at Castaheany ETNS Parent Information

Here at Castaheany ETNS, we aim to use technology in our teaching and learning every day. Many of our subject areas such as Maths, English and Gaeilge use schemes that are supported by online resources; providing your child with a huge range of interactive resources and additional learning opportunities. The websites and online applications we use for the enhancement of learning are publicly available and details on all of them and why we use them are freely available from your class teacher and school leaders. To ensure that all parents are fully aware of the procedures we use we request that all parents read the Acceptable Use Policy which is available on our school website (www.castaheanyetns.ie) and read and sign the consent forms- Using Websites/Apps and Images of Children and Conditions of School Use below. Use of Websites & Applications:

1. student numbers. ● Private and subjective data, including religion, political opinions and geo-tracking data. ● Health, sickness and genetics, including medical history, genetic data and information

about sick leave.

3. In the event that a student needs to be provided with an identifier on a website/ app, for a specific educational purpose, the following will be used:

outside of the school staff to identify the child. In the event that a parent does not want an identifier of any kind to be used with educational websites or apps then the child will not be permitted to use this website or app.

5. Teachers will seek permission from school management prior to using any website or app that requires the use of this identifier. This will be recorded and a detailed description of the website/ app and its educational purpose will be completed and kept on record by the school principal.

6. Parental permission will be sought from all parents when a child starts at CETNS and refreshed on a yearly basis. This permission will be in place throughout the year unless advised otherwise by the parent.

Using Images/Recordings of Children:

1. Staff may take photographs/ recording of the children. To comply with current data protection laws, we need your permission before we publish photographs or recordings of your child.

2. Staff may use these photographs or video recordings for noting/ celebrating progress and achievements or other educational purposes. We may use these images/ recordings on the school’s website or in other printed publications. Please note that our school website can be viewed throughout the world and not just in Ireland.

3. From time to time, our school may be involved with the media, who will take photographs or film footage of a visiting dignitary or other high profile event which the children attend/partake in. Students will often appear in these images, which may appear in local or national newspapers, websites or on televised news programmes.

4. We, the school, will not use the personal details or full names (which means first name and surname) of any child in a photographic image on video, on our website, in our school prospectus or in any of our other printed publications. We will not include personal e-mail or postal addresses, or telephone or fax numbers on video, on our website, in our school prospectus or in other printed publications.

5. If we use photographs of individual pupils, we will not use the name of that child in the accompanying text or photo caption, unless we have your specific separate agreement. If we name a pupil in the text, we will not use a photograph of that child to accompany the article. We may use group or class photographs or footage with very general labels, such as “a science lesson” or “Earth Day 2019”.

6. We will only use images of pupils who are suitably dressed, to reduce the risk of such images being used inappropriately.

Conditions of School Use

1. Photographs and recordings may be taken during school performances and public school events with the permission of school management / event coordinator (CETNS staff member).

2. No photographs and recording may be taken of the children while in class or in the yard without the permission of school management or class teacher.

3. As the child’s parents/guardian, we agree that if we take photographs or video recordings of our child/ren which include other pupils, we will use these for personal and family use only and these images which contain other children will not be distributed.

4. I/we understand that where consent has not been obtained from the other parents for any other use, we would be in breach of the Data Protection Act 1998 if we used our recordings for any wider purpose.

5. It is your responsibility to let us know if you want to withdraw or change your agreement at any time. This consent lasts for the duration of the full school year and will be refreshed annually during your child’s time at CETNS.
