Q: With the news that Heather Locklear is re-turning to “Melrose Place” to join former co-starsLaura Leighton, Thomas Calabro, Josie Bissett andDaphne Zuniga, is there any chance the producerscan lure any of the other former “Melrose” resi-dents back? — Kathy D., Myrtle Beach, S.C.

A: When I spoke recently with Courtney Thorne-Smith, who was promoting her new Lifetime Tele-vision movie “Sorority Wars,” I asked her if she’dconsider returning to “Melrose.” Courtney replied:“I would totally consider it. The timing is not rightfor me now, but I do watch it. I think they are do-ing a great job, and I definitely would consider itfor the future. It’s just not right for me right now.If they do something where we are all there, I’dlove to do it because I’d love to see everybody. That would be really fun.”

• • •Q: Will the TV series

“Life” be back on thisseason? — Glenda F., viae-mail

A: NBC announced inMay that “Life” wouldnot be back for a thirdseason. The show re-ceived critical praise andpretty good overall rat-ings, however, NBC hadto cut a lot of shows to make room for “The Jay LenoShow,” which airs five nights a week in the 10 p.m.slot. You can catch “Life” star Damian Lewis in twoupcoming feature films: “Your Highness,” which willbe released in October 2010 and also stars ZooeyDeschanel, Natalie Portman and James Franco; and“Love and Virtue,” which will be released sometimein 2010 and also stars John Malkovich, Jonathan RhysMeyers, Peter O’Toole and Daryl Hannah.

• • •Q: I love how the new “90210” has

been transforming into a fun, silly andsexy hour of soapy television. Can yougive me any scoop on what we can ex-pect this season? — Bree F., Altoona,Pa.

A: According to star AnnaLynneMcCord, Naomi’s feud with Annie willcontinue well into episode 10. However,Naomi finally learns that her sister, Jen,isn’t really on her side, and she switchesthe object of her wrath to Jen. Also, onthe old-school front, Jennie Garth postedon her Twitter page: “Things aren’tlooking good for Jackie Taylor. Actu-ally filming on original 90210 stages!Weird!”

• • •Q: Is it true that another “Scream” movie is in

the works? — A Reader, via e-mailA: Prepare to be scared for a fourth time, as

“Scream 4” is set to go into production in spring2010. Neve Campbell will reprise her role of SydneyPrescott, with Courtney Cox and David Arquettesigned up as well. There is no word yet on what thelatest installment will be about, but you can bet pro-ducer Bob Weinstein is hoping the “Scream” box-office magic hasn’t faded. “Scream” and “Scream2” each grossed more than $100 million at the U.S.box office, with “Scream 3” making $89 million.

A.J. Allmendinger is hardly alone. Everydriver who migrated into the NASCAR SprintCup Series from IndyCar, ChampCar and/orFormula One has faced difficulties, oft times un-anticipated, in moving to stock cars.

The one greatsuccess story so far is Juan Pablo Montoya, who made theChase in his third try.

But Allmendinger, 27, is getting better, and in markedcontrast to many others, also is still around.

The driver of the Richard Petty Motorsports No. 44Dodge, Allmendinger, from Los Gatos, Calif., finished sev-enth in the recent AAA 400 at Dover International Speed-way. It was his fifth top-10 finish of the year, and it movedhim up two spots to 24th place in the Sprint Cup pointstandings. Prior to this season, Allmendinger had only twotop-10 finishes in 66 tries.

“I come to the track every weekend trying to be as com-petitive as I can and win races,” he said earlier this year.“It doesn’t matter if you’re third or 33rd in points, youhave the same objective every weekend, and that’s to win.

“I think the motivation comes from the effort that is putin every week by Richard Petty Motorsports and the peoplethat build the cars for me. I really feel that I’m getting inreally good race cars that are fast and competitive. It takesa lot of hard work and sweat to get ready for these races, and you don’t want to let anybody down. You’re moti-vated to win for yourself, your sponsors, your team. ...There’s plenty of reason to get motivated every week.”

Allmendinger took great pride in his Dover finish.Oddly, he qualified seventh for the season’s first race atthe Monster Mile and finished seventh in the second.

“Hopefully,” he said, “we can run strong like this in thefinal eight races to show everyone what kind of team thatwe have. It was a smooth day. ... I’m just proud of every-body.”

Moving from stardom in one major series to medioc-rity in another can be tough.

“I’m not immune from losing confidence, but I certainlythink the equipment that Richard Petty Motorsports putsme in allows me to stay positive every week,” he said. “I

don’t think that you can compete at this level of motorsports without having confi-dence in your ability as a race-car driver.

“This is a competitive sport. There are very talented teams and drivers in NASCARall shooting for the same thing: to win. ... If you don’t have confidence out here, youbetter look for another profession.”

Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston(N.C.) Gazette since 1993. He was named writer of the year bythe National Motorsports Press Association in 2008. You love to hunt and your kids are start-ing to get to the age where they would liketo try hunting. You appreciate their interestand have enrolled them in the appropriateeducation course to obtain a license. Youalso plan to teach them the ropes yourself, starting first with gun safety.

To ensure you don’t forget anything, fa-miliarize yourself with these dos and don’tsof gun safety.

Do...• Treat every gun as though it were

loaded.• Read the owner’s manual for your gun

and learn how to operate it properly.• Use the correct ammunition for your

gun.• Carry your gun with the muzzle point-

ing toward the ground.• Keep your finger off the trigger until

shooting.• Look at the target and the area beyond

it before pulling the trigger.• Keep your gun unloaded when not in

use.• Store ammunition away from your gun

and out of the reach of young children.• Clean your gun and keep it free of ob-

structions.• Make sure your gun is unloaded before

cleaning it.

Make Gun Safety A Priority For Budding HuntersDon’t...• Point your gun at anyone.• Modify your gun.• Run with your gun.• Climb with your gun.• Jump with your gun.• Shoot at a hard, flat surface. The bullet

will ricochet.• Shoot at water. The bullet will deflect and

travel a few inches above the water.• Go hunting when you are overly tired.• Drink alcohol when hunting.• Do drugs when hunting.

After you have familiarized yourself withthese rules, find a time to discuss them withyour kids. Stress to them the importance offollowing the rules of gun safety and the con-sequences of ignoring them. Point out, for ex-ample, how many people are killed each yearin accidents involving guns that were storedloaded. Rent a video or take your kids to ademonstration on gun safety.

Kids learn best by example, so make sureyou follow the rules of gun safety. More im-portantly, make sure you enforce the rules.Should a situation arise in which your kidsforget or abandon a safety rule, take the stepsnecessary to correct the situation immediately. It could mean the difference between life anddeath.

Do your kids a favor. Teach them the rulesof gun safety, enforce the rules when neces-sary and help your kids mature into safe, re-sponsible hunters.

Cat Suddenly Stops Using Litter BoxBy Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 6-year-old cat,“Trixie,” has suddenly started peeing in front ofthe front door, on the plastic runner, instead ofusing her litter box. Why would she start doingthis? She is an indoor cat who has been fixed. —Perplexed in Virginia

DEAR PERPLEXED: While it may or may notprovide a quick answer, take Trixie to the veteri-narian and have her checked out. Behavioralchanges can sometimes signal an illness, so it’simportant to eliminate that possibility before try-ing other steps.

If Trixie checks out OK, start monitoring herenvironment, and try to recall if anything haschanged in your home, from furniture beingmoved around to a new roommate or pet. Catscan have trouble adjusting to what seem like smallchanges to you.

Note what’s going on outside as well. Is therean outdoor cat wandering the area regularly? Iswildlife visiting your property? Trixie may be re-acting to another animal snuffling at the door.

answers on page 7

Meantime, whether or not you find the possiblesource of her behavioral change, replace the plas-tic runner with a new one and spray a cat repellent(available at the pet store) underneath, on andaround it. You might want to set the old plasticrunner down in front of the litter box to see if Trixiecontinues to urinate on it — if she does, move therunner over the box for a few days and then re-move it completely from the house.

If Trixie continues to urinate in front of the door, clean up after her as soon as possible to preventthe urine from leaking into the carpet underneath.Try to catch her in the act and hiss or shake a canof pennies at her (don’t do this after the act), thencarry her over to the litter box. Repeat as neces-sary — this could take several days or weeks —but remain patient and encouraging. And of course, clean the litter box daily and make sure it’s al-ways accessible.

• To keep moisture in a cake that has been cut, secure a slice of bread to the cut sides withtoothpicks. This will eliminate the need to sliceoff a bit of the cake to get rid of the dried-outportion. It works well for most types of cakes.

Brass BucklesQ: I have two brass buckles. One is more than

50 years old and has a design of a horse, the otherfeatures a likeness of John Wayne. Are they worthhanging on to? — Nancy, Merrimack, N.H.

A: Brass buckles are fairly collectible. I wasamazed at how many I found on eBay. AlthoughI didn’t find a John Wayne buckle, I did find sev-eral that had horse designs. Most brass bucketssell in the $15 to $25 range, but there are alwaysexceptions. For example, I recently saw a Rich-ard Nixon buckle sell for $75 that was snappedup by a political collector. Change is inevitable, basicallymandatatory, yet resistance to change is strongfor many. What is so misunderstood is thatpeople must be willing to change to achievecontinuity. Without continuous readjustment, the present cannot continue. Change is theonly way to protect what ever exists. Byresisting change, we do not guarantee thatwhatever we care about will remain the same.It only assures that whatever we care about isbeing deprived of the very thing it needs inorder to survive. It is ironic that resistance tochange is a setup for the destruction of, whatwe hold dear. Most often, what we want to continuecame about and is in existence because ofprevious change. Without change we wouldnot have, what it is, we are trying to hold onto. At one point, we made the necessarychanges to get to this .So what is it that makesus so resistant to change? Often to have something new, involvesletting go of something old - something thatcan not be maintained if the new is to takeplace. Sometimes the new is delayed untilthe old has been let go. This is where peopleshow their resistance. What if the new doesn’t

work, isn’t what I want and now I’ve let goof the old? What if I made a mistake? Changeis simply a situational shift. Yet a changecan occur without the experience of atransition. The real challenge involves making thetransition. A transition is a 3- phase processthat involves experincing an ending, asomewhat neutral zone, and a return to abeginning. It is the process of letting go ofthe way things once where and thenembracing the way they subsequentlybecome. This connection between here and theresometimes called the nuetral zone can bechaotic. It can be a time of great confusionand uncertainity. Itis this uncertaintythat is sofrightening formany. This is whyyou see people thatcomplain aboutwhere they are orwhat they have, yetthey remainregardless of thed issat is fac t ion.Although they arenot happy, oftenthis dissatisfactionis morecomfortable thanthe unknown. is why some make a change withoutexperiencing a transition. However, frightening this unknown nuetral zone canbe, it also holds the potential for creativity. It opens up the possibiliites. Often indetermining the new, experiencing thisneutral zone, an individual will experiencesome real personal growth in discoveringwho they are, what the want, and where theywant to be. A change, a situational shift is lessfrightening than a transition. Both areinevitable and both can be positivelyanticipated. Yet transitions are moreprofound. Perhaps in understanding thisprocess, it can be welcomed and acceptedrather than resistedand denied. Afterall, itis inevitable.
