Long considered a pioneer of rock and roll and a forefather of what would become the Chicano rock movement, Ritchie Valens died long before his time, in a tragic February 3, 1959 plane crash that also claimed the lives of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and the plane’s pilot, Roger Peterson.

The Valens legend has, however, en-dured, thanks in part to Lou Diamond Phillips’s homage to Valens in the 1987 film La Bamba, and to Sting Ray An-thony, who has worked tirelessly to put

together a stunning tribute to the late artist.

Endorsed by the Valens family, An-thony’s show faithfully recreates the authentic Valens look and sound, in-cluding his mega-hit “La Bamba,” as well as other top songs like “Come On, Let’s Go” and “Stay Beside Me.”

Jose Feliciano’s name is synony-mous with an international presence that has influenced popular music for more than two generations. A native of Puerto Rico, where he was born blind as a result of congenital glau-coma, Feliciano moved with his fam-ily to Spanish Harlem in NYC when he was five years old. Even from an early age, he was interested in music, and was self-taught on a number of instruments.

Mixing the technical intricacies of Flamenco and other Latin styles with pop music and easy-listening influences, Feliciano is perhaps best

ing the action. I know his mom, so as soon as he saw me, he came right up and said hello.

“How’s tricks?” I asked him.I guess I look like the kind of

guy you can tell all your prob-lems to, because he didn’t hesi-tate to unload. Bottom line: he said he was about two to three grand upside down.

Ouch.So the first thing I asked him

was how often he visited the ca-sinos. He told me maybe twice a month. Huh. So he doesn’t sound like a casino junkie. And he has a good job, says he clears about $600 a week. Not a for-tune, but certainly enough for a young, single guy to live on.

So how’d he get dumped on? Well, he did it to himself. He made the classic mistake many people make: he began to live beyond his means. He moved into a bigger, much nicer pad. His old car passed away, deader than Elvis, so he found a newer, sweet-sounding German model. Then a good-looking member

of the opposite gender came into his life.

So between decking out his new digs, dressing up the au-tomobeeel, outfitting himself in new duds and, more than once, jetting his special gal pal to Ve-gas, he had zipped his stack of credit cards through validation stands so often they got burn marks.

And now he’s behind, hoping and praying he can catch up by scoring enough at the casinos.

“You prayed right,” I told him.

God works in mysterious ways.

I was up front with him. I was going to talk to his mother. I know she’d help. He didn’t wince. He knew he had a Come-To-Jesus meeting with his mom coming. Last thing I remember saying was something about let-ting this be a lesson. It’s all part of becoming a man.You know, I think I shall build a booth. I’ll hang a sign over it: THE DOCTOR IS IN.

Jarrod Musano’s pas-sion for poker didn’t pre-vent him from playing the game he dearly loves just because he’s deaf.

His inability to hear what is going on at the table is a challenge, but it never discouraged him—or many other deaf or hearing-impaired persons, for that matter—from pur-suing the chance to com-pete against the best play-ers in the world.

That’s why Musano and five of his poker enthusiast

classmates from the Roch-ester Institute of Technol-ogy founded the National Deaf Poker Tour (NDPT): to give deaf players recog-nition and open the door for them to compete on the world poker stage.

These Players Make Actions Speak Louder

Than Words

The inaugural tournament was held at Trump Taj Ma-hal Casino in Atlantic City in March of 2006, and the schedule quickly expanded from there. Although their ef-forts to hold a tournament in the nation’s heartland initially proved frustrating, the Ma-jestic Star Casinos in Gary, Indiana, stepped forward and sponsored the first Midwest Regional Tournament of the NDPT in 2008.

A groundbreaking event, the tournament featured a total of 69 players. The winner, Joey Seifner IV of Silver Springs, Maryland, took home a first prize of $3,049.80—and a seat at the NDPT Main Event, which was held at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Ve-gas.

This year, that same tourna-ment will be held at the Ve-netian on July 24 and 25. The two-day event promises to bring together an enthusiastic group eager to earn their right-ful place in mainstream profes-sional poker. The action kicks

off on Friday, with an Early Bird Tournament ($105 buy-in), followed later in the day by what has become known as the “Madness Event,” which has a $125 buy-in.

The Main Event is slated to kick off the day’s festivities on Saturday. It has a $205 buy-in. Another tournament, the ASL Event with a $105 buy-in, completes the schedule.

The tournaments are struc-tured on a point system. The ultimate goal is to find the best deaf poker player and send him or her to a national poker tournament, such as the World Series of Poker or the World Poker Tour.

Deaf and hearing-impaired poker players communicate with one another primarily us-ing sign language. Their acute powers of observation serve them well in a game in which subtle facial expressions and body movements reveal more than the spoken word.

Way Down in the House

JOKE OF THE MONTH

Dear Mark: How does a casino promise that a specific jackpot will be hit within a certain time frame? For instance, say a machine starts with a jackpot of $25,000 and it is guaranteed to be won by the time it reaches $100,000. If all spins are random, how is this possible? Jim D.

Guaranteeing that the jackpot will be hit within a spe-cific timeframe or sum total doesn’t mean that the random number generator is being manipulated. That would be il-legal in every gaming jurisdiction that I am aware of. All displayed results must be selected by a random number generator.

Those “guaranteed-to-hit” jackpots are determined out-side of the reel-spinning game by a separate system that governs the jackpot. This system randomly selects a trig-ger amount somewhere between minimum and maximum points chosen by the casino. The lucky soul who reaches the running total equal to or greater than the trigger amount wins the jackpot.

When the jackpot is finally hit, the running total resets to its minimum, and the system randomly chooses a new trigger point.

Kirk Kerkorian, the billionaire in-vestor who built some of Las Vegas’s most lavish hotels, passed away last month in Beverly Hills, just two years shy of centenarian status.

Still, the Fresco, California, native managed to pack quite a bit of liv-ing into his 98 years. Although he dropped out of school in the eighth-grade, this self-proclaimed “small-town boy who got lucky” managed to rise to the status of one of the world’s great investors, at one time making a bid to take over Chrysler and buying and selling MGM films an astonishing three times, each time making a profit.

With an almost uncanny savvy for predicting future ventures, he saw the potential in a small strip of gambling houses in the Nevada desert during a

visit after World War II. It was there that he made his first fortune, flying gamblers in and out of Las Vegas on Trans International Airlines. The con-struction of the 30-story, 1,568-room International Hotel, the world’s larg-est when it opened in the late 1960s, soon followed, as did several others, including both MGM Grand hotels. Later on, Kerkorian also acquired several of the most prestigious hotels in the city, including the Bellagio and the Mirage.

Quiet and self-effacing, Kerkorian rarely gave interviews. In a rare one with the LA Times in 2005, he summed up the secret of his success: “I just lucked into things. I used to think that if I made $50,000 I’d be the happiest guy in the world.”
