“It really creates much more impact. My dresses look great
in the bright, clean light, while the whole project has a much
more proessional eel.”

BackgroundThe Municipality o Amsterdam is currently in the process o radically
changing one o the city’s most notorious (and amous) areas: the
red-light district. The aim is to reduce the amount o prostitution in the
area and encourage other activities while still retaining the district’s
unique character. Red Light Fashion, in which Philips is playing a
high-profle role, involves converting buildings ormerly used by
prostitutes into temporary premises or use by Dutch ashion design
talents. The buildings are made available ree o charge to designers or
one year or use as workshops, shop-windows and living space.
The challengePhilips was asked to supply lighting or 16 buildings involved in this
scheme. The challenge was to create lighting or the window displays,
which would enhance the quality and colours o the ashion articles
displayed, which range rom haute couture to urban streetwear.
The solutionThe traditional red glow, which so characterised the windows o this
Amsterdam district has now been replaced by a sparkling white light

textiles on display. “I’m very happy with the Philips lighting in the
windows,” says Jan Taminiau, who has set up a workroom and studio in
one o the buildings. “It really creates much more impact. My dresses
look great in the bright, clean light, while the whole project has a much
more proessional eel.” Another participating designer, Noor Wentholt
o leather bag and accessories maker Ignoor, is also positive. “All the
windows really make an impression, especially rom a distance. And up
close, it’s amazing the way the stu on display stands out, especially
against a white background.”
BeneftsPhilips lighting solutions have been used throughout the 16-building
project, providing a visual cohesion and proving how important the choice
o the correct lighting is when illuminating design and ashion. In many
ways it builds on the experience and success Philips has enjoyed in events
such as Illuminesca Milano 2007, which drew guests and press rom all
over Europe to witness a ground-breaking combination between Philips
lighting and ashion. Red Light Fashion, which was ofcially opened on
January 19, 2008, has also been reported throughout the world. Thanks
to Philips, this area o Amsterdam really is being seen in a new light.
