Case Study—151m long x 2.5m wide Cable Stay Bridge, Ebbw Vale Details Client: Dawnus Location: Lot 7, Ebbw Vale, South Wales Length: 151m Width: 2.5m Form: Multi span cable stay bridge Project Description A new 151m long cable stay bridge, erected by CTS Bridges in Ebbw Vale crosses a railway line, road and river to provide safe access for the community from the town to schools and leisure facilities across the valley. The bridge is located on the site of a former steelworks and the area has been regenerated over the last 3-4 years with the bridge providing the final link. The new cable stay bridge comprises four spans of 47m, 50m, 30m & 25m and with a 34m high cable tower supporting the two larger spans with cables. The cables connecting the bridges to the cable tower were tensioned using a Macalloy Techno Tensioner. Varying sized cranes were used by CTS to lift the bridge spans into place including a 500 tonne, 250 tonne, 150 tonne and a 40m Mechanical Work Platform with CTS’s installation team on site for 2 weeks. 60m of matching off bridge parapet was installed to complete the works.
