Case Study
Case study
• What is a case study?• Read the outline from the PDF below
• www.gttp.org/docs/HowToWriteAGoodCase.pdf
• Now think about where you are going on work placement
• You will have one week to assess what you will base your case study on
– Setting objectives
– Starting promptly
– Defining the problem
– Search for and evaluating information
– Solving the case
Five step approach
Case study
During that week you can start gathering information on
the organisation you are working for:
• How big
• Location
• How many staff
• Is it a service or a product…or both
Starting promptly
• Search for relevant background information
• Collect anything which may help your analysis

Case study
Now start thinking about concepts within the organisation:
• Marketing – 7P’s
• Competition
• Ownership
• Standardisation
• Operating systems
• Environmental practice
– Human resources
Case study
• Is there an area you would like to investigate further
• Or better still is there an area the organisation would
like you to look at
• Remember your goal is to seek out a problem or issue
and offer ways to assist with this
Subject
• Ok – so you have decided to study marketing
promotion in the organisation where you are placed
• There seems to be a problem with the current
promotional techniques not really reaching the
target audience
• Here you have the topic of your case study and the
problem you need to define
Start putting it together
• Now go back to the resource on writing a case study and follow the steps
• http://www.gttp.org/docs/HowToWriteAGoodCase.pdf
Presenting the Case study
• You need to present your case study both– Orally and in written form
• Here are the steps to complete this
Case Analysis
• Background section – explain your case topic and
describe the organisation, the products and or
service. Relate this to the current market position
• Problem identification – clearly identify the central
problem of the case
• Critical evaluation of the problem – use your
practical information and relevant market concepts
to evaluate the problem
Case analysis
• Potential solutions – discuss the possible solutions
and their strengths and weaknesses
• Your solution and conclusion – choose the best
solution and explain why
• Summary – briefly summarise your case topic, your
analysis and your solution
Case analysis
• Within each section organise your material logically – the parts make up the whole
• In your visual presentation – apply the techniques for interpretation
• Remember to try out your presentation on someone and ask for feedback
Remember:
All work is to be presented:
1. Professionally
2. Any written material is
• Bound
• Spell checked
• Makes sense
• Factually correct
• referenced
