The Internet of Things is here today, says Stephen Lurie, Vice President, Internet of Things (IoT) for Zones. For Del Papa Distributing, connecting the unconnected helped to increase physical security and improve business processes. To protect employees and inventory, 60 high-definition Cisco Video Surveillance IP Cameras monitor the property perimeter, the 100,000-square-foot warehouse, office corridors, and all delivery gates. Gates and doors lock and unlock automatically, according to a schedule. Zones integrated the video surveillance system, physical access control system, and Cisco phones. If a door to a restricted area is open, employees receive an alert with a link to the video so they can see whats going on, says Holtsclaw. And employees who monitor entrances can open doors by pressing a button on their Cisco Unified IP Phone.

Transwestern Customer Case Study

ChallengeTranswestern is a privately held real estate firm whose many specialties include property and facilities management and sustainability. The number and diversity of network-connected point in Pennzoil Place and 95,000 sensors and data points connected to the network, including fire alarms, wireless access points, video surveillance cameras, temperature sensors, air conditioning units, and monitoring points.

Solution

To transform property management by automating processes from temperature controls to work-order management, helping to increase tenant satisfaction, lower energy costs, and make more efficient use of staff time by speeding up response to tenant requests.

Result

Increased building efficiency and staff efficiency: Building engineers now monitor and manage air conditioning, lighting, and other building systems from wireless tablets. This capability enables them to adjust the schedule to automatically turn off lights instead of walking back and forth to a management console, for example. Mobile employees can reach each other anywhere in the building at their usual number, using Cisco Unified Wireless IP Phones

University of San Francisco Customer Case Study

Controlling access to college residence halls is a notorious challenge. Students tend to move around campus in groups, says Jason Rossi, director of One Card and Campus Security Systems for University of San Francisco (USF). When one student uses an ID card to open the front door, a mob of others might follow without presenting their own cards. Tailgating is very common, and difficult to control, Rossi says. That makes it hard to know who is in the residence hall at any given time.

SolutionNow USF has an accurate record of who entered the residence hall. Students did not need to change their behavior. They still walk into the building in a group after one person opens the door. But now any student who lives in the residence hall is automatically checked in. Their face works like an access card, Rossi says. And if someone walks in who doesnt live in the residence hall, the front-desk attendant is shown their image and alerted to ask for their ID. Now the attendant only needs to ask for ID from people who the system doesnt recognize, says Rossi. Weve made an unmanageable situation manageable.

The solution is built from USFs existing Cisco Video Surveillance system, the existing CBORD ID card system, and new facial recognition software from iOmniscient. We already had a video surveillance camera at the residence hall entrance, Rossi says. Now its doing double-duty. We still use it for incident review. And now we also use it for facial recognition.

To cost effectively connect door alarms to the system, the institute integrated VSM with Cisco Physical Access Manager. This approach simplifies installation and lowers deployment costs by enabling door controls with Power over Ethernet (PoE). The system currently monitors around 20 doors and lets one instantly inspect any event. And again its very easy to expand, Chottiner notes. Cisco Physical Access Manager can be pre-configured prior to implementation and linked with access controlpolicies or human resources and security databases.

Genetec Case StudyKing Edward Memorial HospitalGenesis Integration chose to use an open format security platform that was capable of working with multiple systems, many of which were never designed to work with an open architecture system. Genesis worked closely with Genetec professional engineering and custom solutions team for over a year to come up with interfaces for nursecall, duress, IP intercoms, threat management, access control, CCTV, LPR, and fire alarm.

Cisco Video Surveillance solution, engaging Midstate Security Company, a Cisco Premier Certified Partner, for design and implementation servicesThe ease of managing the Cisco Video Surveillance solution provides ongoing operational cost savings, and we have a high comfort level with Cisco and MidstateIf a camera failed immediately after the wellness check, the team might not discover the outage for another 1.5 days. "A delay in discovering a camera malfunction can be costly if a shoplifting incident or in-store injury occurs during the outage," Bartkowiak says. "Cisco Video Surveillance system reduces risk by continually checking the health of video surveillance cameras and automatically alerting appropriate personnel if a camera is not online or recording."
