Project Requirements:

As the football season drew to a close, it was time forOld Trafford to commence its renovation projects,including the hospitality areas in the West Stand andSouth East Quadrant. All of this needed to becompleted before Paul Scholes’ testimonial, whichwas no mean feat when you consider that the matchwas only a couple of months away.

Alard Electrical Ltd, the electrical contractors for therenovation project, had previously worked with Gammaon other projects and so was happy to recommend thecompany as a reliable partner for the lightingrequirements of the renovation.

Project Solutions:The renovation of the hospitality areas in the West Standand South East Quadrant was a prestigious project andthe selected LED fittings had to help create a luxuriousambience that reflected the high-end surroundings yetdidn’t detract from the other creative and decorativelighting features.

With this in mind, the TTX downlight, powered by Xicato,was chosen for the ambient lighting in the corridorareas. The 700 lumen, 3000K TTX with 60° beam andcentre etched glass provided the perfect amount of lightand offered a quality and aesthetically pleasing fittingfor the location.

In addition to the TTX fittings, Syncro M, S1 and S2 LEDlights were selected for the adjustable display lightingto highlight the various pictures which adorn thecorridor walls, as well as above the doorways leadingoff the corridors. Each of these fittings offered580 lumen output, 4000K, a choice of 54° and 24° beamangles and a brushed aluminium finish.

For the toilets and hospitality bar area, the Buddy Mfitting was selected as an excellent low energyalternative to the 50W halogen GU10. The Buddy M

provided a cost effective adjustable and lockablegimbal, 40° beam angle and a warm colourtemperature of 2700K.

It was at this point that Hannon Associates, BuildingServices Consultants for the project, were asked toreview the fittings supplied by Gamma. After analysisand a range of tests, the fittings were approved for the job.

Project Results:

As well as creating the desired ambience the LEDluminaires will save a substantial amount of time andmoney over their long life when compared to other lightsources. A prime example of this is the Buddy M whichconsumes only 7W giving a saving of up to 85% whencompared with a 50W halogen GU10.

Further savings will be made from the exceptional lifeof 50,000 hours (L70) offered by the TTX luminaires,during which time there will be low maintenance costsand minimal disruption no-relamping requirements.

To the delight of Manchester United the renovationproject was completed on time and without any issues,which meant that the hospitality area was open forbusiness in time for the testimonial match.

The reduction in energy and carbon emissions, realisedfrom the new luminaires, are sure to have helpedManchester United achieve a number one ranking in theEnvironment Agencies Carbon Reduction Commitment

(CRC) league table. The table ranks 2,000 organisationson the steps they’ve taken to comply with the standardsof energy management set out by the Carbon Trust.
