Corfu

IntroductionCorfu is the most northerly of the Ionian Islands just off the west coast of

mainland Greece. It is a popular holiday destination for visitors from northernEurope and attracts around half a million British tourists each year. Visitors areattracted by the island's 200 kilometres of coastline, rugged terrain and lushinterior. Corfu is beginning to change its image from a destination thatdeveloped on the back of the package holiday boom of the 1980s and 1990s toa place where more discerning visitors can enjoy the island's peace andtranquility. Walking and bird watching are growing in popularity, while watersports are on offer in many parts of the island. The capital of the island, CorfuTown with some 40,000 inhabitants, has a rich architectural and culturalheritage, the result of successive years of Venetian, French and British rule.

AccessibilityFlight time from the UK is approximately 3 hours 30 minutes, landing at theisland's only airport just outside Corfu Town. As well as flights from the UKthere are regular charter services from other European countries. Roads aregenerally good in the built-up areas of the island, but can be a little dangerousoff the beaten track. There are regular ferry services in the summer to Italy andother Greek islands.

Climate

Corfu is an island suitable for holidays at most times of the year and the westcoast has a more moderate climate than the east. Winters are mild withrelatively high temperatures compared to the UK (5-14ºC) and sunshine forapproximately 4-5 hours daily. Summer is the most popular tourist seasonwhen temperatures rise above 30ºC. Temperatures are still warm at 24-28ºC inthe autumn when the island has sporadic showers that are followed by days ofclear sunshine and the occasional thunderstorm.

Holiday areasCorfu has a range of holiday areas that appeal to a wide variety of visitors.

Much of the "mass tourism" development is clustered immediately north andsouth of Corfu Town. Resorts such as Dassia, Ipsos, Sidari and Benitses caterwell for the family market and feature in many tour operators' brochures. Muchof the northern coast is quieter, especially around Kassiopi and Kalami,although Sidari on the north-west tip is one of Corfu's largest resorts. Kavos, onthe southern tip of the island, is very popular with young people, boasting manyclubs and bars. Corfu has its own way marked, long-distance footpath, theCorfu Trail, which runs for 220 kilometres from the southerly white cliffs ofArkoudillas to Cape Agia Ekaterini in the north.

Culture and heritageThe people of Corfu, known as Corfiots, are cultured people with a greatmusical and artistic heritage. The many art galleries on the island havepermanent and changing exhibitions by local and international artists. Moderntheatres and various outdoor locations serve as venues for a great variety of

events, from rock concerts and displays of contemporary dance toperformances by the island's symphony orchestra and theatrical works oftragedy and comedy.
