The project objectives were to achieve very high standards of sustainability within a challenging £9m construction budget and to a very fast programme of 22 months from concept to completion. CASE STUDY Solution The University of East Anglia elected Check Your Security to install 360 Vision Predator & Mobotix S15 cameras, providing a complete surveillance solution that integrates with the UEA’s existing security setup. Assa Abloy locks seamlessly integrates into the existing Gallagher Access Control system that the UEA has investment in over the years, allowing the UEA the ability to easily & cost effectively increase Access Control doors. Geze Automated doors & internal Assa Abloy locks provide a fully flexible integrated building with multiple access control options. The University of East Anglia (UEA) is an English public research university located in the city of Norwich. Established in 1963, the university com-prises 4 faculties and 28 schools of study. Situat-ed to the south-west of the city of Norwich, the university campus is approximately 320 acres (130 hectares) in size.

Features of the UEA campus include Earlham Hall, childhood home of Elizabeth Fry, which is now home to UEA Law School; the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the western end of the main teaching wall designed by Lord Foster to house the art collection of Sir Robert Sains-bury and Lady Lisa Sainsbury, it also features as the new avengers headquarters in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant Man and forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films; and “Sportspark”, a multi-sports facilities built in 2001 thanks to a £14.5 million grant from Sport England Lottery Fund.

Crome Court’s Green Goals Initial stakeholder meetings with students identified the importance of ‘green’ issues. As a result, the UEA aimed to deliver a building where students can live comforta-bly but also know that their building is in harmony with their own environmental aspirations. Martin Lovatt, Project Manager, commented, “This building is a signpost, a figurehead of what can be achieved, but changing people’s behaviour can have a much bigger impact in the longer term.”
This is exemplified by the touch screen energy monitor in every kitchen, displaying the flat’s energy use plotted as a percentage against the building’s best and worst performing flats. We hope to engen-der a healthy level of competition that may help raise awareness of energy usage which students will take
with them through their lives beyond the University.

Martin Lovatt, who is also the University’s Project Man-ager for Blackdale, said, “It’s going to be even better. We’re learning all the time – and, actually, a lot of what you learn isn’t so much the processes; you learn to recognise the people who can use those processes, and pull in the right team of people at the right time.”
