Step Brothers (2008)-

Page 5: Case study

The conventions in this trailer have been used is a typical way. It has background music, Institutions, Actors names, Clips from the different scenes with funny quotes, it’s short and its also very light hearted and not dramatic,

so that the genre is immediately obvious.

The location is at mainly the home now shared by the men, their father and mother (by marriage). But also a boat on the sea, offices and the Catalina

wine mixer are being used for scenes.

Characters: Dale, Brennan, Nancy, Dr Robert Doback, Derek and Alice are main characters.

Props and costumes are all suits, childish clothing such as shorts, converse, t-shirts and tuxedos for comical effect.

The trailer includes a narration through jumping into scenes in the film briefly to build up a basic knowledge of the storyline to get the audience

interested. Camera Angles constantly being used are close ups, wide angle establishing

shots and medium upper body shots.

The Success of the trailer:

The trailer did well in conveying across the storyline to a point where the audience wanted to watch more and pay to see it in the cinema.

It was very comic and showed this by using light colours.

Improvements:

In certain trailers you feel some of the best parts get shown in the trailer and when you see the film you already know what the punch line is going to be.

Sound/ Lighting – The sound and lighting are not anything special, the whole idea of the storyline is that it’s a reality TV show for Bruno who Is trying to make it big in America.

The Camera Angles are Close ups, Medium shots, Establishing shots, Wide Angle.

Success Of Trailer -

The Most Funny thing i think is the way the Real people react to Sasha Baron Cohen and this character. They have no idea he’s fake and respond naturally when he puts them in extreme circumstances.

The Comic ability of this gentre is huge and has been the centre point

of Sacha’s Career.

Could this trailer be improved? I think that the trailer couldn’t have

been better, the build up at the start is hilarious, and the little of the movie you do see makes you want to see the rest of it.

Talladega Nights The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby.

Conventions being used in the trailer – The trailer included the classic line “From the makers of”, the voice over was a generic voice easily recognisable, the storyline was made clear, the institutions were at the start, background music and so on.

Location/Setting – The Comic take on the nascar scene in America the locations are in the USA, around the track, Big Mansion, Granmas house, in his car, restaurant.

Characters include Reece Bobby, Ricky Bobby, Lucy Bobby, Cal Naughton Jr, Glenn, and Lucias.

Props/Costumes – Racing cars, Reece Bobbys Muscle car, Mansion.

Camera Angles - nothing particularly special about it, it is the Cameras in the cars which are used to effect, the other camera angles include close ups and mid shots as there is a lot of interaction between characters.

The Success Of The Trailer -

The Trailer has a commentary through the entire thing, This means that the best parts and quotes don’t have be shown In the trailer and ruin it for people maybe.

Page 15: Case study

Where it could have been improved -

There aren't a lot of places, apart from maybe better slide transition, not just jumping from one quote tp another. It would be better if the narrators speech fit in with the clips.
