Narrative Aspects within thevideo. The main storyline to this music video is that Carly is trying to impress the local neighbour, he is

presented as a typical hot American boy of which all the ladies would want to run after, showinghis 6pack within the video to impress female audiences with his body. Carly however is seen tohave little chance with this male actor as him shows little interest to her; Carly therefore triesharder to impress him, of which is shown in a comical way towards the audience. Furthermoreat the end of the video it shows the male figure giving his number to one of Carlys male bandmembers saying call me maybe twisting the whole story and making the video seem comicaland making sense to why the man was ignoring Carlys hints.

Genre ConventionsThe genre is dance pop/ teen pop, this is quite clearly shown through themusic and performance side of the video, by including up beat tempo withan easy orientation of dance moves. The quote Differences betweengenres meant different audiences could be identified and catered to thismade it easier to standardise and stabilise production. Pop music videos use the genre conventions of music videos to help targettheir audience by showing Carly forced outside to wash her car in shortshorts and wedged heels. This would then attract male attention and maleaudiences to watch the video, this action is called the male gaze, enticingmales to watch this video due to her looking sexy. When Carly is shownsinging/ practising in her garage this meets the stereotype of teen popbecause Carly is represented as a teenager herself, of which manytheatrical teens could relate to this video as they too sing/ perform in thegarage as this is the only spare space they have to perform and cannotafford a recording room as such.

Within this music video the female singer, Carly Rae herself ispresented as stupid in a comical way. After Carly falls off the car when

trying to impress the local neighbour this gives the audience theimpression that she is trying to hard to connect with this guy and insteadis making her to seem a fool for trying. This is shown throughout themusic clip many times, another example of females being representedas a fool is the fact that the whole song Carly is chasing after the malefigure and he turns out to be gay, making Carly seem idiotic and a fool

for chasing after someone she cannot have. The representation shownfor the male figure is that they are the stronger and more dominant sexas Carly is chasing after him and he does not seem bothered at all, itpresents Carly to be begging on her knees and craving his attentionwhereas the guy is used to this female attention as is not surprised by it.

    Representations within the musicvideo.

This image is shown and Carly islooking up at her lover, gazing into

his eyes whereas he is looking far into the distance, by looking up athim, it makes Carly appear to bethe weaker sex compared to him.

I couldnt find many intertexual references within the song as a referencebecause this video was very unique in its own way creating a comical storyline. However since its release the song has inspired many other listeners to createcovers on YouTube.

    IntertextualReferences

This image however is an intertexual referencesoccurs throughout the dream sequences when

Carly faints after falling off the car, imaginingherself with the male admirer. As you can tellbetween these two images Call me maybe haslinked this image to Shakespeare's famous playRomeo and Juliet by giving Carly and the boyold fashioned clothing, in long dresses this canbe linked to the 1590s play due to the clothingand hairstyles of the male also having longbrown hair. The writing in the background of thecouple also links between the two imagesstating the name of the play/song again makinga strong link between the two types of references.

Lyrics and Visuals. By using the lyrics All the othersboys, try to chase me shows that sheis trying to make the admiring boy

jealous as he should appreciate that

she likes him and is turning away allof the other boys who are chasingher, and he should feel honoured thatshe has picked him over everyoneelse. She tries to flirt with the boy byacting sexy and washing the car

while singing to him, until she falls off the car and makes a fool out of herself.

This shows that Carly hasbeen waiting for a boy like himall her life, as she has dreamt

about him and thought abouthim before hand. She missednot having him in her life andnow she has met him shewants him even more. Gettingal hot and flustered in the

video, fanning herself downwith a magazine after getting a

    Music andVisuals

This image occurs when the boy next door looks

at Carly, who is busily staring at him, shesuddenly realises she has been caught staring sofalls to the floor to hide herself from theembarrassment. As her body hits the ground, thebeat kicks in and the chorus also starts then. Thisfalling symbolises the beginning beat to the song.

Throughout this part of the music video, the backing beat of the song stops, andthe chorus is sung once again, withoutthe beat, this is used to show her dreamsequence showing the audience thedifference between real life part of thevideo and this dream sequence of Carly

devoting her love to the boy.

    Shots of Carly Rae Jepsen.

In this long shot, Carly is shown singing/practising in her garage this stereotypes

teen pop because Carly is representedas a teenager herself, of which manymusical teens could relate to this videoas they too sing/ perform in the garageas this is the only spare space theyhave to perform and cannot afford arecording room as such.

This is a close up shot of Carly, this puts the audiencesattention towards Carlys facial features, her sparkling eyesand her glossy pink lips. This would attract male attention fromviewers and they would feel more interaction between themusic video and themselves.

This shot is a bird eyes view of Carly while she islaying on the floor. It is a mid shot, meaning the zoomis roughly in the middle and showing half of Carlysbody. This image occurs after Carlys dream sequencethinking that the next door neighbour is in love withher, and waking up very embarrassed to see the

confusion and worried look on his face.

Narrative vs. Performance. There is only a small section of the musicvideo of which is performance. This partof the video Carly is in a small band, containing a bass player, lead guitaristand pianist Carly here is wearing aflowing shawl which wraps around her body to keep the cold off her arms. Thisshows that she is not trying to show her sexual side; showing her innocenceinstead and the attention is put towardsher love to the boy.

The performance is still linked to thenarrative part of the video, as theneighbour is watching this performance

outside the garage, keeping the storylineand performance linked together.

The main storyline to this music video is thatCarly is trying to impress the local neighbour,he is presented as a typical hot American boyof which all the ladies would want to run after, showing his 6pack within the video to impressfemale audiences with his body. Carlyhowever is seen to have little chance with thismale actor as him shows little interest to her;Carly therefore tries harder to impress him, of

which is shown in a comical way towards theaudience. Furthermore at the end of the videoit shows the male figure giving his number toone of Carlys male band members sayingcall me maybe twisting the whole story andmaking the video seem comical and makingsense to why the man was ignoring Carlys
