SOLUTION: GE Appliances instituted slip simulator training to teach employees to recognize hazards and how to walk safely. The training was one of several measures instituted to mitigate risk including upgrading snow and ice removal and improving housekeeping processes. No company can create a zero-hazard environment and this is where slip simulator training fills the gap by increasing employee skills. RESULTS: In one year GE Appliances recorded an 80% reduction in slips, trips and falls! This dramatic improvement reflects GE Appliances’ commitment to a culture of safety and its continuous desire to seek out innovative solutions like the slip simulator. WHY IT WORKED: Slip simulator training is unique. It gives employees an opportunity to “fail,” i.e. fall, in a safe environment. Certified trainers then teach employees how to walk safely. This type of learning is called kinesthetic and research shows it is much more effective than just showing a slideshow or posting fliers. An employee’s perception of fall risks increases during slip simulator training. This increase in risk perception increases the employee’s engagement in safety training. And, lastly, slip simulator training is fun! Employees and trainers alike say “it’s the most fun I’ve had safety training.” GE APPLIANCES CLIENT: GE Appliances INDUSTRY: Manufacturing LOCATION: Louisville, KY The training is unique and hands - on which keeps operators engaged. We have implemented this training for all new employees. This step demonstrates our commitment to reducing slips, trips and falls. ~ Chris Cruise, EHS Specialist
