OPERATING IN PRAGUE AIRPORT
Operating one of the two cargo terminals at Prague airport 24/7, Skyport depends upon its compact but capable Toyota Traigo 24 counterbalanced trucks.
Today almost everything is transported by air, from mail to food, zoo animals and luxury cars. Skyport’s terminal is prepared for all types of consignment.
When a client airline’s flight arives Skyport puts all of its technical facilities into action, including its Toyota and BT trucks. Toyota 2TD20 towing tractors pull unloaded goods, including containers and pallets on special trolleys, to the Skyport terminal. The process of sorting and placing individual consignments in designated locations continues using Toyota Traigo 24 counterbalanced trucks and BT Levio LWE180 powered pallet trucks.
“For manipulating the trolleys inside the warehouse we use the Toyota forklifts for consolidating loads and preparing the trolleys for despatch to the aircraft,” David Adámek continues. “We rely on the trucks – any aircraft will not wait for the goods – so we really require absolute technical reliability, which I can confim we have with our Toyota trucks.”
“In 2007 we went out to tender to find a materials handling supplier. After a fairly long selection process we chose Toyota as our long-term partner for future co-operation. What we liked in Toyota’s proposal was mainly its complexity – they were the only provider that was able to supply all of the products we needed at the time.”
“Out of all the competitors Toyota was the only supplier that was able to provide us with a complete solution including the diesel towing tractors, so we could get all of the materials handling equipment serviced by one partner.
“We decided to go for a lease agreement so we don’t need toworry about repairs or maintenance and we’re quite happy with this solution.”

Material Handling Range for AirportsScandinavian Airlines System (SAS) has always stood out from the crowd for its quality customer service and innovation.
Since starting operations in 1946, the company has developed a comprehensive aviation-related service portfolio, including passenger and cargo transportation and airport ground services.
In 2004, SAS divided its operations into several different companies focusing on specific core businesses. Two of these new companies are SAS Ground Equipment and Spirit Air Cargo Handling. SAS Ground Equipment offers airport operators a Total Ground Equipment Concept as well as a Radio Communication Concept comprising financing, maintenance and fleet management.
In 2005, both companies started a project to reduce the number of suppliers for materials handling equipment, parts and service.
“Our target was to have one supplier for trucks, service and spare parts,” says Michael Lysgaard, Director of SAS Ground Equipment Denmark. “We were looking for a full range supplier for the whole Scandinavian market, including the smaller airports.”
Toyota was one of four suppliers considered. After extensive driver trials and feedback, SAS Ground Equipment andSpirit Air Cargo Handling signed long-term rental agreements with Toyota for a wide range of electric-powered equipment. Under the deals, Toyota also provides service and maintenance, with two fulltime service technicians on location.
In May 2006, Toyota Truck Danmark A/S (now Toyota Material Handling Denmark) delivered 29 units to SAS Ground Equipment: three reach trucks; two 3-wheel, 48V electric forklifts; five 4-wheel, 80V electric forklifts; eight powered stackers, nine powered pallet trucks and two hand pallet trucks.
All forklifts are equipped with Toyota’s ‘electric DNA’ technologies: the System of Active Stability, the AC² Power System and the Operator Total Care (OTC) package. They have ergonomic seats with integrated mini-levers, sideways battery exchange, and optional fork extensions for transporting two pallets at once.
“The choice for Toyota was based on the total package – the quality of the trucks as well as Toyota’s extensive sales and service network in Scandinavia and across Europe,” says Michael Lysgaard of SAS Ground Equipment. “If we have a need or a service issue, we want to call one place and get it fixed fast. With Toyota we can do that, which also helps us serve our customers better.”
High productivity, operator comfort and dependable performance in multi-shift operations are also top priorities for Spirit Air Cargo Handling, says René Jarnel, Technical Coordinator at Spirit Air Cargo Handling.
To keep Spirit Air Cargo Handling’s electric fleet running around the clock, Toyota designed and installed two integrated battery charging and changing systems. The charging systems were the first of their kind in Denmark and have significantly enhanced productivity and safety, says René Jarnel.
Efficient materials handling operations are key to Spirit Air Cargo Handling’s mission of delivering top-quality customer service. When packaged loads arrive on conveyersand are broken down and rebuilt onto September 2007www.toyota-forklifts.eu MATERIAL HANDLING new pallets, reach trucks are used to build the pallets and stack them in the racking.
“We’re very happy with the first shipment of trucks,” says René Jarnel of Spirit Air Cargo Handling. “And we’re interested in what additional solutions our Toyotadistributor can offer.”
