Transcript of case 1GUS - LO 13
Case 1: Acute Post Streptococcal Glomerulonephritis
LO 13: Explain and summarize the prognosis of post streptococcal acute nephritic syndrome
Overall, the prognosis is good, with permanent renal failure being very uncommon. Complete recovery occurs in >95% of children with APSGN (Acute Post
Streptococcal Glomerulonephritis) Recurrences are extremely rare. Early death is rare in children but does occur in elderly. Mortality in the acute stage can be avoided by appropriate management of acute
renal failure, cardiac failure, and hypertension. Infrequently, the acute phase is severe and leads to glomerulosclerosis and chronic
renal disease in <2% of affected children. Complete resolution of hematuria and proteinuria in the majority of children occurs
within 3-6 weeks of the onset of nephritis. 3-10% of children may have persistent microscopic, hematuria, nonnephrotic
proteinuria, or hypertension.
