It was nice to see everyone at the last meeting. We

had a great turnout and an excellent presentation

from John Shewey. We are off to a great start for the

new year. Our February meeting held on Thursday,

Feb 22 will have Lloyd Thurman as our presenter,

speaking on Oregon’s Coastal Lakes. This

presentation is just in time for our outing to Cleawox

with Bill Burleigh. With the rivers still high, the

Oregon Coastal Lakes are a great fishing

opportunity. Sounds like an exciting meeting, so be

sure to attend.

We have a lot planned for this upcoming year. We

have several educational and conservation volunteer

opportunities scheduled. The first one is Kids’

Adventure Club on March 3rd with Travel Lane

County. We will be teaching local youth different

aspects of fly fishing. These are fun projects to help

get youth exposed to fly fishing. If you would like to

participate, be sure to contact Glenn Miller.

We have a couple of tying events coming up. The

Reedsport Fly Tying Expo is coming on Saturday,

February 24th. There will be several of our club

members tying at this event.

Every year the FFI Oregon Council puts on the

Northwest Fly Tyers and Fly Fishing Expo, held in

Albany Friday and Saturday, March 9th and 10

th. This

is the biggest tying event west of the Mississippi. If

you haven’t been, it is an event you must see. Our

club always has a big presence at the event, hosting

a bucket raffle. Anyone who volunteers at the show,

gets a free entrance for the day. Contact Marv

Clemons if you are interested in participating.

Membership has never been higher in Cascade

Family Flyfishers. As President, my focus this year is

getting new members involved in our activities. The

Fly Expo is a great place to start. No special fishing

skills are needed with the bucket raffle. You get to

meet other club members, work with them, and see

some of the best tyers in the region.

Bob Wolfe will be teaching useful fishing knots

before the general meeting on Thursday, February

22nd at 6 PM. If you want to learn his knot tying

techniques and gain special tips about knots, be sure

to come early to our general meeting.

For CFF members who are learning to fly fish, Bob

Wolfe will be teaching a Casting 101 on Saturday,

March 24.th This hands on course is for beginner

members who are learning to fly fish. If you are

interested in learning some new skills, be sure to

talk to Bob and sign up. This is another great way to

participate, meet other members, and learn from the

experienced fishers.

It will be March before you know it….”March Brown”

to be exact. Can’t wait to see you all at our next

meeting. Randy

Fly Fishing Oregon’s Coastal Lakes with Lloyd Thurman

Lloyd Thurman’s presentation will offer an in-depth expose’

of the lakes in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area,

from Lily Lake in the north to Garrison Lake in the south.

Come prepared to receive hand-outs detailing the lakes,

flies and places to stay. Lloyd has fished extensively

throughout Oregon and brings a wealth of personal

experience from many years of exploring and fishing

Oregon’s coastal lakes. These lakes have many secrets:

Lloyd Thurman knows and tells them all!

Lloyd Thurman is a life-long Oregonian, born in Eugene.

Lloyd’s parents loved being in the out-of-doors and they

really liked to fish. Lloyd was one of those fortunate

youngsters who was introduced to fishing before he was

school age.

Lloyd Thurman is a member of the Lower Umpqua

Flycasters and the Umpqua Valley Fly Fishers. He lives just

south of Roseburg, OR with his wife, Judy---his personal fly

tyer!

Michael T Williams CFF Program Chair ————————-

I am wondering why fishing has always been such a big

deal for me. Maybe it’s the time spent with my dad Tom,

time with my maternal grandparents Ty and Sukey and

the nibbling of a trout on a salmon egg bait, along with

the resulting tugs and pulls of a fighting fish. Being in

the out- of-doors, in the wild! All these early career

engagements have led me to a much deeper, reverent

appreciation for my deceased dad, Tom Williams, caring

enough to take me fishing!

Also interesting to me is my tendency to lose

conscious awareness of “time” while connected to a

hooked fish. Some of my most cherished memories are

connections with a wild trout, often within the environs

of a remote mountain river. One such incident occurred

for me upon a Western Oregon Cascades mountain river.

A former sweetheart named this gem, Whisper Creek.

From my Whisper Creek Journal October 25, 2011: Multi

-colored alder leaves grace Whisper Creek’s flow, some

atop the water, most tumbling submerged. These ever-

present, paper thin, pinnate veined and half-palm sized

tooth edged leaves are tucked within streamside

pockets, seen as whorls adjacent to sandbars, affixed to

in-stream boulders. Every streamside structure is

carpeted---mostly in tans, browns and yellow-golds.

I am at “The Secret Hole”, a secluded deep riffle run

and pool that I discovered before the turn of the

century. I name all of the sweet water on Whisper creek!

I do not leave footprints. I fish alone on 95% of my

visits. Only two others have seen this water in my

company in nearly 20 years. They will not tell you----

anything! A Joslyn’s October Caddis pupa pattern

dangles from the 9-foot 4 weight MTW custom rod’s

green graphite tip, courtesy of the late Don Joslyn’s

genius. Six feet above this orange nymph-type fly a

translucent yellow “thingamabobber” adorns the leader.

Such a rigging is a rarity for me; typically utilized but

once or twice each year, in late season. I lob cast into a

deeper current seam edge. In only several feet of drift

the hapless “indicator” is yanked downward and away,

out of sight beneath Whisper Creek’s 45-degree late

season flow. I strike back as quickly as possible, feeling

fighting strength from whatever grabbed the fly. My rod

tip bends sharply downward while being pulled

upstream in a powerful wrenching. How the Ross

Colorado’s muted Hardy-like drag talks! The strong wild

trout bores upstream almost at will. Immersed within

shallow water I walk near the edge of the shaded gravel

bar downstream in an attempt to bring the trout into the

deeper, more mild flow at mid-pool. Easier said than

done! Once accomplished and with side to side rod

pressure, I catch a heart stopping glimpse---a wild

Rainbow, displaying a bright crimson side stripe. My

gawd! Whatta fish! Following several jumps and another

run, I manage a grip on the line, carefully deposit rod

and reel on the shaded gravel bar and turning my

attention completely to the REDSIDE, strip in leader

while feeling the trout’s capable pulling. I manage a

gentle left hand grip, hoisting this gorgeous wild

Rainbow to my ready camera for a photo--- marveling in

this mountain river beauty’s substance! With trout

quickly submersed again I snick out the de-barbed fly.

As I release my touch I watch this lovely incarnation

disappear---dark olive, black spotted, red striped, wide

back--- angling upstream, deeply out of sight and into

its mountain river home. A part of my heart goes with

the fish.

Cleawox Lake: Our first outing of 2018 is to 82-acre Cleawox Lake on the coast near Florence. Trip host is

Stillwater expert Bill Burleigh. Bill knows the lake very well and is very helpful in making other club members

successful. The lake is heavily stocked with legal and larger rainbows.

Directions: To get to Cleawox from Eugene take Hwy. 126 west to Florence, turn left on Hwy. 101. Go three

miles south of Florence and turn right into Honeyman State Park. There is a large parking area with

restrooms and places to launch tubes or pontoons. It is a good idea to bring change, three dollars, as a

parking permit is required.

Most of the area we'll fish is no deeper than 12 - 16 feet and usually an intermediate line is a good choice,

though sometimes a faster sinking line is helpful. It is also nice to have a dry line for indicator fishing. Good

flies are small nymphs like Princes and Pheasant tails, size 14, Bill Burleigh’s olive seal bugger, and a brown

bugger like Joe Moody’s Krumbo Killer. Bob Wolfe's black and red trout Candy chironomid is always a good

bet.

A great way to stretch your fly line and sharpen your reflexes for the 2018 season ahead ------- come join us!

Cleowox Lake March 15th Trip Host : Bill Burleigh

Back to this coastal lake south of Florence with a new leader, stillwater expert Bill Burleigh. This lake is

shallow, easily fished, and heavily stocked. Bill knows this lake well and is usually successful here.

Great way to get the kinks out of your fly line and kick off our 2018 angling season.

Hult Reservoir April 14 Trip Host: Bill Burleigh/Glen Neal

This is the oldest outing on our schedule, and usually the most heavily attended. Leaders Bill Burleigh

and Glen Neal know the lake like the back of their hands. This is a good trip for novices and

experienced anglers to get help from the many club members attending without driving far. Fishing can

range from red-hot to slow, but it is always a good time. And…to top it off, Bill and Glen always bring

Dutch oven cobbler desserts so don’t miss this one!

Carmen Reservoir May 3 Host: Rod Roth

Our Carmen Reservoir outing is a one-day fishing trip at the uppermost diversion reservoir used by

EWEB for power production. The water, the McKenzie River just a few miles from Clear Lake, is

exceptionally clear and cold, ranging in depths of 4 to 18 feet. The reservoir is well stocked, and our

host, Rod Roth, has planned this outing to coincide with the release of 3000 trout. Be sure to join us for

this great fishing day adventure.

North Twin June 2 Trip Host: Bob Wolfe

For those busy families, Bob Wolfe is hosting a one-day outing to the North Twin Lake. The beautiful

lake was formed from a crater that filled with ground water, set in the Deschutes forest area. The lake

is just 2 .25 hours away, stocked with trophy rainbow trout, and is a great place to fly fish for all fishing

levels. Bob is an excellent host, sharing his extensive fishing experience with all. Come join the

fun. This is one outing you won’t want to miss.

Calapooia River June 30 Ginnie Grilley

If small stream fishing is your thing, this trip to the Calapooia River Is for you! Located one drainage

north of the McKenzie there are wily cutthroat, heavy rainbows, and plenty of salmon smolts competing

for your fly. This section of the river has been closed to motorized access for a number of years. Once

the brush has been tamed, the wading is relatively easy.

2018 is an exciting year for the CFF Outings schedule. We already have several of our favorite

fishing spots lined up with CFF’s hospitable and knowledgeable outing hosts. Many of our dates

are coordinated with the US Fish and Wildlife trout stocking schedule so the catching, at least theo-

retically, is more probable and a little easier. At each of our meetings there will be a sign-up sheet

for upcoming outings. A variety of day and overnight trips have been planned. We also meet some

evenings for fun, fishing, and companionship. Due to liability constraints, CFF sponsored outings

are for CFF members only, but our $25 dues are well worth the cost for membership. Come join

Cascade Family Fly Fishers.

2018 Outings

8

Erma Bell Lakes June 15-16 Trip Host: Glenn Miller

The Erma Bell Lakes are nestled in the Three Sisters Wilderness area and provide a beautiful setting to

spend two days fishing for wild Rainbow trout up to 18 inches. We camp at the trailhead for one night

and pack our float tubes into the lakes on a two-mile, fairly level trail. This annual trip provides

exercise, good fishing, and great camaraderie as we eat and fish as a group. Come join us in 2018!

East Lake July 12-15 Trip Hosts: Kat/Frank Paiva

High in the caldera of a dormant volcano at 6,400 ft., East Lake is one of the most beautiful areas in

Central Oregon to fish. Large brown trout, rainbow, and kokanee are abundant, and CFF members do

our best to get them attracted to our flies. Come join us for one of our most popular annual outings.

Small Streams July 28-29 Trip Host: Glenn Miller

If you're looking to learn or gain experience on small stream fishing, this is the trip for you. We'll

spend two days fishing on the best small streams around Oakridge (North Fork, Middle Fork, & Salmon

Creek), all upper tributaries of the Willamette River. We're planning to have 3-4 experienced stream

fishers to help guide this trip. Beautiful scenery, some good exercise, and a chance to catch feisty, wild

Cutthroat and Rainbows are attractions for this trip.

Crane Prairie August 25 Joe Moody/Dennis Munroe

This is a new addition to our outings schedule. Leaders Joe and Dennis have fished here many times the

last few years and it is a favorite. Fishing can be easy or tough, but this is your best chance to catch

some of Oregon's largest and hardest fighting rainbows…the famous “CraneBow”!

Gold Lake Derby September 8-9 Trip Hosts: Joe Moody/Dennis Munroe

We moved this outing to autumn to avoid the prolific mosquito hatch and added a fun competition

element. This beautiful lake sits at 4,800 ft, elevation near the top of Willamette Pass not far from

Eugene. The lake is full of brookies and some nice rainbows, last year most anglers were very

successful. This year we are initiating the first annual Gold Lake Derby.

Metolius River September 14-116 Trip Host: Mike Marlatt

Stream anglers couldn't dream up a better outing than this! A challenging, blue ribbon trout stream in

a beautiful setting and a trip leader who is a hall of fame fly tier who spent his youth fishing the

Metolius. Mike Marlatt leads this new outing for 2018…should be a memorable trip.

Diamond Lake October 5-7 Trip Host: Marv Clemons

Diamond Lake outing is always a grand adventure for those participating. Set at 5,100 ft. high in the

Umpqua National Forest, this beautiful lake is ideal for fishing with views of Mt Bailey and Mt Thielsen.

The outing host, Marv Clemons, has lots of experience fishing this lake over many years and readily

shares his expertise. The Diamond Lake Lodge offers amenities that make this trip a delight. Be sure to

get your reservations early as lodge rooms and RV spaces fill quickly.
