We’ve changed our branding! The strong imagery and powerful message of our blue-gray speech bubble campaign was extremely successful for more than three years. It spoke to the devastating experiences abused and neglected children face each day. Combined, the creative elements helped galvanize hundreds of volunteers across Tarrant County who became trained court-appointed Advocates.

We’re excited to announce the next phase of our branding—one that speaks to the answer to children left without a voice in court. This phase, featuring the faces of youth and Advocates positively impacted

by the CASA experience, focuses on the critical nature of true advocacy. It speaks to the difference one volunteer can make in the life of the child, and it highlights the hope Advocates bring to suffering children.

A warmer palate, full-color photographs, and images of children and adults all speak to our new motto: Hope works both ways. With a website easier to navigate, and a streamlined social media campaign, we will continue to grow our volunteer Advocate pool. Those Advocates, in turn, will perform life-changing work by speaking up for victims without a voice. There is no better message of hope than that, and we’re thrilled to share it with you!

AWARDS DINNERPRESENTED BY XTO ENERGY

JUDGE SCOTT MOORE

A Huge Success! For over 30 years, CASA of Tarrant County has served thousands of abused and neglected children through the voices of volunteer Advocates. This year’s Judge Scott Moore Awards Dinner on April 24th at the Renaissance Worthington recognized dedicated volunteers, community leaders, and professionals who fight for vulnerable children, ensuring their future will be better than their past.

Hundreds of Advocates and supporters from across the county joined in our celebration. Master of Ceremonies Andy Bearden, known to CASA as a fierce advocate for abused children, shared some of his heartfelt experiences as a volunteer.

The evening’s keynote speaker, Ashley Rhodes-Courter, is a New York Times bestselling author of Three Little Words. The internationally known child welfare advocate shared her moving story of growing up in the foster care system. During her ten years in foster care, she

dealt with 195 child welfare administrators, caseworkers, lawyers, judges, and foster parents. Yet she credits her CASA volunteer as making the “greatest difference in [her] life.” Rebecca Farrow, CASA of Tarrant County’s Executive Director, remarked, “By sharing her experiences as a foster child, foster parent, and CASA volunteer, Ashley truly put our mission into action—speaking up for abused and neglected children. She made our signature event an especially poignant evening, and I’m grateful for her time and talent. But more importantly, I am grateful to be on her team.”

Dr. Karyn Purvis, founder and Rees-Jones Director of the TCU Institute of Child Development, received the Judge Scott Moore Award for her work with “children from hard places.” She shared insights of trauma-informed care for at-risk children and praised CASA and its volunteers for their life-changing work. As the co-author of The Connected Child: Bring hope and healing to your adoptive family, Dr. Purvis has trained professionals across the US and in many other countries on the most effective ways to help these children thrive.

Thank you to all who participated in this successful event, including Chairs Kara and Brian Bell. Support of this event ensures more children will have a voice in court, and that’s an extraordinary gift to give. Also, we extend a special thank you to our presenting sponsor XTO and Platinum supporters Lori and David Haley and Terry and Terry Schultz.

An Evening of Advocacy in Action with Ashley

Judge Scott Moore Awards Dinner Keynote Speaker Ashley Rhodes-Courter joined CASA volunteers in an intimate conversation about advocating for abused and neglected children. Ashley mixed in humor “I want this to feel informal. Get closer like we’re all here on a date!” as she shared her personal experiences. As a foster child whose life was changed by a CASA, Ashley went

on to write a NYT bestselling memoir, get a Master’s degree in Social Work, and speak nationwide on foster care issues. Ashley and her husband have both been CASA volunteers and foster parents. She spoke from personal experience when she told the volunteers, “You can literally be the difference between life and death.” She credits her CASA for changing her life, and another CASA volunteer for saving the life of one of her sons, whom she and her husband adopted through foster care.

A special thank you to Board Member

Chisholm Trail Parkway Run and Ride… the Results are in!

The Chisholm Trail Parkway Run & Ride raised over $72,000 for CASA of Tarrant County! In a wonderful display of community collaboration, the Run & Ride, organized by elected officials, community leaders, and corporate sponsors, drew over 4,000 participants in 6 events. Proceeds from the event benefitted two agencies whose support for neglected and abused children span the entire length of the Chisholm Trail Parkway: CASA of Tarrant County and CASA of Johnson County.

“We are honored to receive this donation from the Chisholm Trail Parkway Run & Ride events. We’re proud to live in a community where people believe children have the right to live in safe, loving, permanent homes. This money will help ensure that reality for many abused and neglected children in Tarrant County. Our children may never know where the

financial support came from, but they will undoubtedly benefit from its lasting impact.” CASA of Tarrant County Executive Director Rebecca Farrow

As high school graduations are in full swing around Tarrant County, one group of teens are likely missing out on the experience. In 2011, foster youth in Texas had a graduation rate of only 40.7%, compared to the state average of 70.7%.

Jimmy Wayne, country music singer, National CASA spokesperson, and former Judge Scott Moore Awards Dinner keynote speaker, knows first-hand the educational obstacles facing children in foster care. In an interview with The Atlantic, Jimmy said, “I don’t even remember what I learned—no, let me rephrase that—I don’t remember what they tried to teach me—after fifth grade. It wasn’t until I had a stable home and was taken in by a loving family in tenth grade that I was able to hear anything, to learn anything. Before that, I wasn’t thinking about science, I was thinking about what I was going to eat that day or where I could get clothes. When I was finally in one place for a while, going to the same school, everything changed. Even my handwriting improved. I could focus. I was finally able to learn.”

Jackie Spitzer, CASA volunteer and former elementary school principal says, “Children in foster care are in great danger of school failure and of dropping out.  Often times they are transferred to several different schools in a single school year. Without an Advocate, the education plans are not maintained as they should be and there is a great loss of time in the child receiving the services he/she needs.  I cannot stress enough how much a child suffers educationally.”

CASA of Tarrant County’s volunteer Advocates provide the judge with an extra set of eyes and ears for abused and neglected children. They ensure the children on their cases receive continuity of care and that their needs are addressed in new homes and schools. Dedicated volunteer Advocates can make a significant impact on educational outcomes for these children.

For teens in high school, educational advocacy is especially important. Casework Supervisor and former high school teacher Lynne Burns has seen her volunteers help guide teens to graduation or GED. “The best thing a CASA can do for a school age child is to make contact – and then make friends! – with the school office staff and the counselor.  In cases involving high school students, their counselor will be able to tell you where the student is in relation to graduation – credits they have and credits they need.  Then the CASA will have an accurate and realistic picture of what their student needs to earn a high school diploma before leaving foster care – which should be a primary focus of anyone dealing with a teen in care.” When one of Lynne’s volunteers, Sheila, first met Kandace, she had changed schools several times and was two years behind academically. Sheila worked with teachers and counselors at Kandace’s new school to help her get back on track. This past week, three years after she took the case, Sheila watched Kandace graduate high school.

REGULAR PEOPLE. REMARKABLE IMPACT.

ANDREW’S STORY

For more than 10 years, CASA Volunteer Susan Myrosh has served over 50 children and their families and was recently honored by Judge Ellen Smith and the Family Drug Court for her work. The Family Drug Court is an integrated, court-based collaboration that protects children from abuse and neglect precipitated by substance abuse through timely decisions, coordinated services, treatment, and safe and permanent placements. Five specially trained CASA volunteers, including Susan, are integral to the success of this team approach.

During the hour after parents arrive to court, and before the judge takes the bench, the Family Drug Court team staffs each case carefully. Casework Supervisor Natasha Lawry says, “During this time, parents used to sit and wait in the lobby. This seemed like a waste of valuable time to Susan. She took it upon herself to organize speakers for the parents every court hearing so they could learn something while they waited.” Susan has invited local professionals to teach parents about 12-Step Principles, HIV awareness, Domestic Violence prevention, Child Nutrition, Shaken Baby Syndrome, Discipline Options and job interview skills. Thank you to Susan and the team of dedicated Family Drug Court volunteers for their countless hours of service!

Andrew had been shuffled back and forth between family members before going into foster care at 11 years old. His unpredictable childhood caused severe behavior problems and impacted his success at school. Andrew’s volunteer Advocate Carolyn has become his champion. A retired teacher, Carolyn looks past the behaviors listed in his file to see Andrew as a child who just needs a stable home. She is his voice at school, ensuring he is in an appropriate academic setting and that his teachers understand his needs. Now placed with a family friend he has long considered his grandmother, Andrew is doing better in school and his behavior is improving. Carolyn is working closely with Andrew’s CPS caseworker to help “grandma” navigate the family court process so that Andrew can find a permanent place in her family.

CASA of Tarrant County is dedicated to recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers who reflect the diversity of children the agency serves. Recently, CASA of Tarrant County hosted a listening post with Texas CASA and other Northern region CASA offices. Community leaders discussed CASA’s effectiveness in Hispanic community engagement and volunteer recruitment and provided feedback on proposed PSA and print materials for connecting to the Hispanic community. With feedback from community leaders and listening posts across the state, Texas CASA worked with K. Fernandez and Associates to develop a targeted campaign to recruit more Hispanic and bilingual volunteers. CASA of Tarrant County will be adapting these materials and using them in our own volunteer recruitment initiatives.

Visit speakupforachild.org to find out more about becoming a volunteer.

See You at the Movies!

If you head to the movies this summer, you may see CASA on the big screen! Texas CASA contracted with 160 CineMark theaters across the state to run a PSA on the benefits of CASA volunteers. The PSA features a young man who, at the age of 15, lost his father. When his mother became unable to care for him, his life changed dramatically. That’s when a CASA volunteer stepped in and changed his life forever.

You can view Chadwick’s story here:

The clip will run in theaters across Tarrant County, including Arlington, Fort Worth, Mansfield, Burleson, Grapevine, and North Richland Hills. The CASA message will reach new audiences and grow awareness of the critical work our Advocates do every day!

McKinley’s CASA Cookies

In honor of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, McKinley’s Fine Bakery and Café in University Park Village, created delicious CASA cookies! The shortbread cookies were covered in blue icing and shaped into awareness ribbons. All the proceeds from the 341 cookies sold benefitted CASA of Tarrant County. McKinley’s has done this for 2 years in a row, showing their support for the work our Advocates do. We sincerely thank the owner, Stacey Rumfelt, and her staff, who used their talent to speak up for children in a powerful (and delicious) way! They offer a diverse menu of homemade breakfast, lunch, cakes, cookies, and other dessert items, so stop by the thank them and treat yourself!

CASA of Tarrant County is a proud recipient of support from generous women in our community. This year the agency received grants from the Colleyville Woman’s Club, Mansfield Women’s Club, and Greater Keller Women’s Club Foundation to support advocacy services in those communities. The Junior League of Fort Worth has provided four volunteers to assist the agency with items donated for our children during the holidays. Thank you to all of these civic organizations who support our children through grants and service!

Diligent Recruitment Grant/Family Connections: This is a collaborative effort between DFPS, Texas CASA, and Child Trends as the evaluators. Specific counties have been targeted to identify adoptive homes for children for whom parental rights have been terminated and permanent homes for children for whom DFPS has permanent managing conservatorship without termination of parental rights. The department is focusing on children with sibling groups, children who are African-American or Hispanic, older youth, and children with specialized needs. CASA volunteers helped identify homes. Our Family Connection Specialist supervised 11 DRG Advocates serving 20 children under the grant.  Trust-Based Relational Interventions (TBRI): Developed by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross at the TCU Institute of Child Development, TBRI is an emerging intervention model for a wide range of childhood behavior problems, including multiple foster placements, maltreatment, and/or neglect. The goal of the training is to empower professionals to become healers for at-risk children on micro and macro levels. Two Casework Supervisors attended this training and an overview of TBRI has been incorporated into new Advocate training.Personnel and Infrastructure: CASA of Tarrant County hired a new Executive Director, Rebecca Farrow, to lead the agency through the next phase of growth. Additional Caseworker Supervisors were hired to meet the growing needs of abused children and Advocate placements. Outreach/Recruitment: Outreach and recruitment activities grew substantially from 2012 to 2013. This growth includes the number of outreach presentations (90/+13%); volunteer inquiries (974/+4%); volunteer applications (190/+6); and, volunteers attending informational sessions (281/+21%). Social Media: CASA of Tarrant County’s Facebook page continues to grow with over 5,000 fans. Visitors learn about upcoming special events, trainings, agency highlights, and relevant news stories.
