CASA Support Council News
Welcome new CASAs!
The CASA Support Council would like to welcome all of the
new CASAs. Please check out the services we provide on our
website at www.pimacountycasa.org. The website has all of
the reimbursement forms you need to fill out. If you have any
problems with the forms, or questions on reimbursement,
please first contact your CASA Coordinator, who has a copy of
a recent document, “CASA Support Council Reimbursement
Process,” which provides a step by step process for Mileage,
Outings, and Special Requests reimbursements. Any additional
questions may be directed to our Treasurer, Karlene Nelson, at
[email protected]. We look forward to meeting
you and to providing for the unmet needs of your CASA
children!
Assistance League of Tucson, Inc.
The Support Council is once again working with the Assistance
League of Tucson, to provide new clothing for children ages 5-
11, under their “Operation School Bell” program. This will
include high quality outfits for school, selected by the children.
Also, we have asked the Assistance League to provide tours of
their facility for new CASAs, as well as for those CASAs who
were not able to take the tour last year. The tour will also
provide information on the process for CASAs and their CASA
children. When the details are worked out, Krissa will notify
CASAs of the tour dates. Finally, the CASA Program has a
limited number of gift cards for JC Penney that the Assistance
League provided. These can be used for emergency clothing
situations. Please contact your CASA Coordinator if you need
one.
Pima County Staff Spotlight – Julio Vega
Meet Julio I attended high school in Flagstaff, AZ where
my long football journey would begin. I
moved to Yuma, AZ in 2003 to play junior
college football. In 2005 I trekked across the
country to North Carolina to continue playing
college football until a back surgery derailed
my plans of being an athlete. I moved back
to Arizona in 2007 to be closer to family while
healing from my injury. It was then that I
decided to attend the University of Arizona
and the rest is history, I fell in love with Tucson.
I left briefly to help take care of my
grandmother in Flagstaff but returned to
Tucson after she passed. My mother just
moved to Tucson, AZ after some months of
trying and now the “old pueblo” is definitely
where my heart is! I graduated from the
University of Arizona in 2008 with a BA in
Political Science along with minors in
Sociology and Spanish. “Bear Down Arizona”
I have had a great deal of behavioral health experience prior
to my current position here with CASA. I worked at Amparo
group home while in college working with female teens who
had children or who were pregnant (a humbling experience). I
then worked for Providence as a Case Manager working with
a high needs case load for male teens that were primarily in
out of home placements. I returned to Flagstaff to help with
family matters while working in a self-contained educational
program with kids whom had emotional disabilities. When I
returned to Tucson I began working at the Banner University
Medical Center at the inpatient psychiatric unit as a crisis
worker.
Working out is one of my favorite things to do since I played
college football. Anything to do with athletics is definitely my
cup of tea and I enjoy passing the time either participating in
sports or watching them.
I have worked with the CASA program since April of this year, a
very fast moving four months! The hardest part of working with
CASA is that we cannot help every child that needs a voice.
The most rewarding part of this job is that we are helping
children in need. Everyone in the CASA program is making
their community a better place.
What encouraging words would you share with a CASA?” Even
if you only touch one child’s life you are making a difference!”

CASA Kudos
Special thanks to CASA Edith Connors for setting up a tour of the U of A Athletic Facilities for CASA Kids and Advocates.
Congratulations to CASA Judy Price, CASA Cecily Crebbs, CASA Terry Bernier, and CASA Monica Ayon on being appointed to their first case!
Kudos to CASA Kathy Anderson for getting your CASA youth a YMCA membership & so much more. You are providing an enriched childhood through your advocacy.
Kudos to CASA Tanya Ivey for the demonstrated stability for your CASA boys. Your efforts in July & August to get them ready for the new school year were very valuable.
Kudos to CASA Amy Hogan, Adelina Altamirano (Foster Family Support Specialist) praised Amy saying “I believe it is because of her interaction with the children and attendance at a CFT that she was instrumental in isolating the concerns on this case. She also documented all concerns in her court report. Also, the children’s counsel indicated that the CASA’s report was thorough, written well and corroborated what the therapist and FCRB had advised.”
Kudos to Peer Coordinator Judith Meyer for helping 2 newer advocates navigate the unexpected nature of CASA work.
Thank you to CASA Steve Lautenschlaeger for his willingness and energy to help us with recruiting efforts.
Thank you to CASA David Dodge, CASA Susan Haynes, Peer Coordinator Sally Bedrick, CASA Liz Bagnoche and the many others who help new advocates during their observations. Advocates have shared that this is a rich experience that helps sketch a picture of what it will be like when they get their first case!
A special thank you to CASA Peg Churcho and former CASA Tricia Petek for working together in the transition of Tricia’s CASA child to Peg, as the child’s new CASA advocate. Tricia and her family moved out-of-state and Peg ensured this child would continue to have a stable and caring adult and advocacy for what is in her best interest.
A special thank you to Peer Coordinator Roger Pinkstaff for his dedicated and persistent work with his CASA child and with the child’s team members to actively support the young person as he ages-out of the system and moves to another state to be with family.
At a recent Dependency Review hearing, Judge Ferlan told CASA Phyllis Hested that he appreciated her time and all of the ways she has supported her CASA child. He also noted that it was clear that Phyllis has good relationships with the members of the team.
Kudos to CASA Paul Black for his diligent advocacy to assist his CASA child being placed with family out-of-state. Paul is working with the child and team members to try and accomplish the needed services prior to the child’s move as well as getting resources and supports in-place to assist with the child’s success in his new environment.
Kudos to Co-CASAs Ann Shaver and Dale Gustafson for their thoughtful communication and dedicated and persistent team work on behalf of their CASA children.

Kudos to CASA & Peer Coordinator Sharon Dely. Dr. Tobiason called Sharon “the voice of reason” on her current case.
Kudos to CASA Bob Simpson for supporting his CASA child as he finds permanency in his potential adoptive home.
Thank you to CASA Jane Swivel for her persistence – she was finally able to get her CASA child’s name corrected! This took effort.
The Judge thanked CASA Deborah Lee for all of her hard work and getting started so quickly. Kudos to CASA Ceci Rivera for helping see permanency and family reunification accomplished for
your CASA kids. Judge Yehling thanked CASA Robin Rosenthan for her excellent report. Thank you to CASA Barb Laurtzen for her advocacy and help as her CASA child transitioned home. Thank you to Peer Coordinator Marion Pickens for becoming PC to another new CASA advocate! Kudos to Peer Coordinator & CASA Susie McClinton – Her work as a courtesy CASA has ensured
consistent advocacy for a child from Oregon who is now placed in Tucson. This CASA child is in his forever home and they are counting down the days until the adoption is finalized.
Kudos to CASA Alan Dankwerth – you survived a very unusual and interesting first court hearing (dad is representing himself and creating an interesting dynamic).
Peer Coordinator Ellen Werts was thanked by one of her CASA advocates for all of her hard work. Peer Coordinators have become such a valuable tool here in Pima County. We appreciate all the efforts made by our 13 Peer Coordinators!
Congrats to CASA Irving Berger - you were a consistent support for your CASA child who has now transitioned to father’s care in Mexico. Thank you for advocating for permanency!
Congrats to CASA Debbie Boyle – you too helped your CASA child find a permanent home! A special thank you to CASA George Franklin for the support, education advocacy, and constancy he
provides to his CASA child as the child transitions and stabilizes in his new out-of-county adoptive family.
A special thank you to CASA Ardie Banks for spending valuable time with her CASA child to get to know her and to be a constant in this child’s life. Ardie did a wonderful job on her court report, conveying information about the child and the importance of family in this child’s life.
Kudos to our CASA advocates who take on our infant and toddler cases. You bring a voice to the littlest ones in our community and ensure they are heard in the courtroom.
Kudos to CASA Lorna Boon for her insightful, enthusiastic and dedicated work on behalf of her CASA child.
Kudos to CASA Sister Mary Ann Rawson for your perseverance during a long Trial. You did an excellent job on the witness stand!
Thank you to CASA Peg Chuchro for quickly getting the educational documents sent to your CASA child’s new placement in Tennessee.
Thank you to CASA Amy Hogan for helping copy & assemble the Alert Team Packets. Great job CASA Tracy Grow - she wrote an OUTSTANDING Court Report. Thank you to CASA Peggy Clark & CASA Kathleen Elsberry for emailing CASA staff with local activities
for kiddos. Kudos to CASA Colleen Bartell the Judge said CASA is doing a “remarkable” job. Thank you CASA Eloise Williams for writing a great court report. CASA reports are invaluable tools
our judges rely on when making life-altering decisions for our children in foster care. FCRB thanks CASA Elda Lopez for her continued commitment to her sibling group. Kudos to CASA Mike Treacy for doing a great job communicating with his CFT team. Thank you to CASA Christine Hoekenga for doing an excellent job on her court report.

The Judge thanked CASA Sally Bedrick for all of her hard work on the case. Kudos to CASA Edie Connors for navigating the twists and turns of 3 placements for your one CASA
Kid during the month of July. Transitions can be so hard and having you show up at each new place is reassuring to him that he is important to someone!
Kudos to our Teen CASA Advocates! Recently many of you have faced very challenging situations without hesitation. You deal with communication issues and breakdowns in services without letting the system lose sight of your CASA youth. You are looking for youth who ran away and waiting for a phone call to hear they are safe. Thank you for stepping in the gap for these youth who might otherwise fall through.
Congrats to our newest CASA Advocates – Pamela Flint, Caroline Champagne, Jennifer Andrews and Pamela Coggins!
CASA Recruitment Spotlight
By Jill LaBrie Along with some of our regular annual recruiting events, such as Fiesta Sahuarita and Tucson Meet Yourself, I am
planning to kick-off a few new projects to help grow the program and spread the word about CASA.
The first is to develop a local Speakers Bureau. Now, I know some of you are saying this has been tried in the past and
has not worked well. To that I say, we are going to make it our own and use it in a way that works for us. For those of
you who may be interested, this includes those of you who have already talked with me and/or have completed the
Ambassador Training, we will have an initial planning meeting on Thursday September 10, 2015 from 3:00 to 4:30 in
Conference Room B at the Juvenile Court.
The second project is to come up with a targeted recruitment plan to increase the number of male Advocates. I am
looking for “a few good men” - any and all of our men who are willing to help with this in whatever capacity you can,
from brainstorming ideas, plan development, plan implementation to actual recruiting activities. Please let me know if
this is an area you are willing to help with. I would like to set up an initial meeting sometime in September.
We are also focusing more on Faith Based recruitment as well as developing more partnerships with the local business
community (share our program with employees, have them post our material, maybe allow us to use space for
recruiting events). So if you know of contacts at your place of worship or a business you frequent, that can help open
the door for us please let me know.
Lastly I want to thank all who volunteer to help with our recruitment efforts; you all are truly our most valuable
recruiting resource. I also want thank those that have recently offered to help with our September and October events.
I can still use some more people for Tucson Meet Yourself. This is a fun 3-day event. This year it will be on Friday
October 9 thru Sunday October 11 in Downtown Tucson. Our booth hours will be roughly from 10:30 am to 5:00 or
6:00 pm each day. If you want to help, even for a few hours, please let me know. 724-9238.

CASA of Pima County Program Updates:
Encouragement to attend a Case Support/ALERT Team Meeting
By Krissa Ericson
Greeting Advocates: I want to take a quick minute to encourage you to consider attending one
of our case support/ALERT team meetings. These monthly meetings offer you an opportunity to
give and gain support as you journey through a dependency case as a CASA advocate.
Our Case Support & ALERT team meetings are facilitated by a CASA Program Coordinator or a
CASA Peer Coordinator. The facilitator is there to provide updates from the CASA program as
well as provide a forum for discussion and support. Case Support meetings are for new and
seasoned advocates alike! You may be wondering – why should I attend? Well let me tell you
what a few of your fellow advocates have said:
“I attend because I am ALERTED to resources, services, strategies, websites, agencies
that are useful to me & my CASAs; and I do feel SUPPORTed (sic) by sharing case
experiences with others who understand, show empathy, and have multiple ideas for solving
problems; aka "productive venting." CASA & Peer Coordinator Susie
“I feel strongly the Alert Team meetings are invaluable and so I believe it is imperative CASAs attend
them. What better source to draw from than our fellow CASAs?!
We are given an opportunity to share our case, frustrations, joys, disappointments, and struggles in a
secure environment. Where else can we get that?
I have benefitted tremendously in receiving guidance and other objective viewpoints to my challenges on
a case as well as experience from other CASAs relative to my challenges.
The more feedback, info, guidance & support I can get, the better I can serve my CASA kiddos.” CASA
Peggy
Anyone who attends a case support or ALERT team meeting will receive training credit, which is
just another great reason to attend! On page 10 of this Newsletter as well as the Calendars that
follow at the end of this issue, you will see the dates for our September & October meetings.
The facilitator is listed along with their contact information on page 10. I strongly encourage
you to find a date/time/location that fits for you and check it out!

CASA Story Shared by National CASA for Children
A Voice Revealed: A CASA Story 25 Years in the Making Born in 1973, Pilar was raised by parents who suffered from alcoholism and
were abusive. They would leave Pilar and her young siblings alone to fend
for themselves while they went out drinking. The children entered Child
Protective Services and were split apart.
At age 5, Pilar was almost adopted by a family she loved, but health issues
halted the process. She then ended up being adopted by another family who
had also adopted her younger sister. The mother turned out to be abusive,
hitting and beating the girls. The father began molesting Pilar.
For years, Pilar was scared to speak up, but at 16 she finally told a counselor:
“I was really surprised that the school counselor listened to me. If I told my
adoptive mom, she would never believe me.”
Now in 1990, Pilar found herself back in the foster care system, but this time something had changed. CASA
of Travis County had been founded in 1985 by a group of concerned citizens and judges.
Camie Flowers was appointed to Pilar and her sister: “I realized this was her second time in the foster care system.
My heart just went out to the things that they had endured.” “I just was really happy that [Camie] was there to listen
to me. That’s all I wanted growing up, was someone to listen to me and be close to me,” said Pilar.
Camie helped Pilar and her sister stay connected, driving across Central Texas so they could spend time together.
She helped Pilar with jobs and transportation and guided her through everyday teenage troubles. Camie was there
to see Pilar graduate from high school and help her move into her first apartment. After Pilar turned 18, she kept
in touch with Camie to check on her sister. “Having her in my life made me really focus on how to forgive people.
I’m a strong person, and one reason is because of Camie,” said Pilar.
Pilar has broken the cycle of abuse and neglect in her life. Pilar and her husband of 20 years, Derrick, are loving
parents to their daughter Marcella, who is heading into her third year of college. And Camie and Pilar have become
lifelong friends.
Hear Pilar’s story in her own words in a half-hour film, A Voice Revealed, which you can watch at:
www.casatravis.org/avoicerevealed
We would like to thank Epic Creative Media for the talent, hours and boundless creative energy they contributed to
help us tell Pilar and Camie’s story. Our advocacy for Pilar continues today. Pilar always wondered about the
family who had almost adopted her at age 5, particularly the father, Ben. We got the family’s name and old address
from Pilar’s CPS files. Our Family Finding team was able to find Ben’s updated contact information and Pilar
called him. “He said he never forgot about me. He still had my picture. I wanted to cry on the phone. It was so
touching to hear his voice after so many years,” said Pilar. Ben traveled to Austin and she emailed us after their
visit: “This has always been what I wanted, to see this family again. Thanks to CASA for making it happen.”
We are privileged and proud to know Pilar and Camie. We are grateful to Pilar for sharing her story to ensure other
children do not face the challenges of the foster care system all alone like she did the first time. We wish for all the
children we serve a life like the one Pilar has built.

Dashboard & CASAaz.gov Email “News”
We have asked CASA of Arizona to address the need for more characters in the
Assessment section of the court report template. As of 8/31/2015, we do not have any
information regarding when this enhancement will take place. Thank you for your
patience with the new system. We strongly encourage you to use the online report and if
needed the work-around tricks we have to deal with this issue until there is an
enhancement made.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: I’m in the Dashboard but I can’t see my emails – HELP!
A: The Dashboard and CASAaz.gov emails are two separate systems.
To access your email (your secure communication tool!):
1. Go to casaaz.gov/webmail (https://p3plcpnl0711.prod.phx3.secureserver.net:2096/)
2. Use your casaaz.gov email address as the username and your unique password to log in
To access the Dashboard (your case management tool!):
1. Follow this link for the Dashboard: https://apps.azcourts.gov/Casa/Login.aspx
2. Use your casaaz.gov email address as your username and your unique password to log in
Q: How can I print from the Dashboard?
A: At this point in time there is no print feature directly built into the Dashboard. On your web-browsers
you have the option to use the "right click & print" option to get a print out of what you are seeing on
your screen. Attached is a picture of what it looks like on my computer screen (MAC might be different).
Q: How do I print from the CASAaz.gov email?
A: If you selected Roundcube as your default, you will see a print option under the "more" button.
3. Select the message you want to print
4. Click on “More” and select “Print this message”
The process is the same whether you are looking at your inbox or reading a specific message. You
also will see a printer icon when reading the message that will allow you to print that specific
message.
8
Court Appointed Special Advocates
Pima County, AZ
Q: How do I review case documents in the Dashboard? A: Look for case related documents under the files column. You will see a book icon on your Dashboard
– see picture below for a visual explanation.
Q: I get an error message when I click “view details” on the Dashboard. Now what? A: We are aware that the view details link often renders an error message. If you are fortunate to get a
page to open, you’ll find that the information is 1. Out of date 2. Incomplete and 3. 99% irrelevant to the
current situation/dependency. This is because the Dashboard is pulling some information from our Joltsaz
database that was initially designed for probation/detention and then dependency cases were added into it.
Since the information entered does not get updated, regarding our CASA children etc., anything that you
may find will be old information.
Krissa suggests you just ignore this link! Your CASA case information will be visible to you on the main
Dashboard page. All disclosed documents for your CASA case will be under the Files column, the book
icon and please note that you may not see new documents very often as we will only upload what we
receive - sometimes disclosure is very minimal during the months between court hearings.
Q: I can’t remember my username or password. Help!
A: Your username for both the Dashboard and your CASAaz email is the same. It is your CASAaz email
address! (For example – John Doe = [email protected]) Make sure you have 2(a)’s CASAaz & use .gov
not .org!
Either in training or at home you set up a unique password for both systems (Dashboard & CASAaz
email – a.k.a the CPanel). If you cannot remember your unique password – there are different steps to get
them rest.
Resetting your Dashboard Password:
On the login screen of the Dashboard, under the Login button there is an option to click: I can’t access
my account. You will be prompted to enter an email address on the next screen – be sure to enter your
CASAaz.gov email address. A temporary password will be sent to this email and you’ll be able to log in
using the temporary password.
Resetting your CASAaz.gov email Password:
If you are unable to login to your CASAaz.gov email account, contact your Program Coordinator to have
your password reset. We have to submit a brief form to have the AOC IT team do a password reset for
your account. It may take them up to (1) business day to process this reset – so please have patience!
If we can help you in anyway with these new systems, please call or email us! Feel free to attend a
refresher training & if needed, Krissa is happy to do house calls to get you situated with using these
systems on your home computer. Krissa can be reached at 520-724-2069 or via email:
[email protected] Thank you for embracing this transition head on and helping us cut down
in paper & postage costs!

Have you visited these websites lately?
CASA of Arizona & National CASA have great websites to
support advocates locally and nationally. When you have
some down time we encourage you to visit each website to

Here are some
opportunities to consider…
1. Talk to your Peer
Coordinator or Program
Coordinator about taking a
second case!
2. Become a Co-CASA with
another advocate to serve
a larger sibling group.
3. Join forces with a seasonal
resident as a Co-CASA -
they can do the majority of
the “work” during their
time here & you keep in
contact with the child
when they are out of state!
4. Become a Peer
Coordinator! As we
continue to grow in size
the need for this
additional support team is
more evident. Have you
been an advocate for 1
year? Talk to your
Program Coordinator
about this opportunity to
support new advocates.
5. Help us with simple office
tasks. From time to time
we need help making
copies or assembling
training materials!
6. Join the CASA Support
