WHAT WE DIDFor CAS week we went to Singapore

to volunteer for an organisation cal led ACRES (Animal Concerns Research Education Society).

We worked for a duration of 4 days (from 13 t h January to 16 t h January).

Work started everyday at 9:30am to 5:00pm.

The volunteer work was physical labour.

WHAT IS ACRESThey are an animal-aid

organisation based in Singapore.

They rescue domestic and il legally smuggled animals into the country.

They also rescue wild animals found in the city and raise awareness about how many creatures are becoming endangered.

FIRST DAYWhen we fi rst arr ived, we were

introduced to a few of the staff members and were given a quick tour around the premises.

We were given a br ief run down on what the organisat ion does and were introduced to some of the animals that the organisat ion managed to rescue.

The animals housed with in the premises var ied between torto ises, soft -shel led turt les, snapping turt les, iguanas, b i rds, etc.

FIRST DAYAfter that , we were spl i t into two groups

to do separate labour.Some of us went to weave a large net .Some of us began gardening work.This inc luded chopping down and

uproot ing unwanted p lants , p lant ing certa in p lants and water ing them.

Afterwards, we went out into the forest to d ig out heavy s labs bur ied in the d i r t and br ing them to the garden to make a pathway. This was the most physica l ly tax ing job.

SECOND DAYOn the second day,

we went into separate groups yet again.

Some of us went to sweep the pavement and entrance as well as clearing out the drainage system.

SECOND DAYSome of us also helped to

design and paint the entrance sign.

SECOND DAYSome of us also

cleaned the roof of one of the buildings by sweeping leaves off of it.

Some of us also started cleaning and scrubbing the walls of one of the bedrooms.

We also cleaned and scrubbed the furniture in the room, including the beds and fan.

THIRD DAYOn the third day we scrubbed

the fl oor of paint and vacuumed the room.

Some of us also went to chop off the branches from trees that were getting unwanted leaves onto the roof.

We also began scrubbing and vacuuming the dirt and grime off of another bedroom.

FOURTH DAYOn the fourth day we covered

up the wall cracks with sealing material,

We also painted the walls of the second room with two layers of paint.

After that, we were given the opportunity to look at their snakes.
