CARTOONS IN CONFLICT

2 3

Organizing an exhibition of cartoons illustrating reconciliation in conflict was an extremely difficult and challenging task for the Parents Circle -Families Forum.Challenging because peace, reconciliation and tolerance seem impossible to achieve in the morning, within reach at lunch time and sodistant in the evening.Challenging as these people burdened with suffering, approached an art form which is often extreme to illustrate a very complicated and sensitive subject.Caricatures by their very nature can be abusive and extreme, funny and painful. They can touch the most sensitive core because the truth comes out with a few strokes of the brush.Challenging for the organizers as they agreed to show difficult works next to lighter interpretations. This is a reflection of the work of the parents circle families forum who are known for their open and brave attitude.Challenging for the artists themselves who approached the subject without pity, and sometimes with a good dose of cynicism. Some tried to break through this loaded subject by opening a door to a smile, others pushed it open with a painful question. The result is a mixture of optimism and pessimism expressing so well the complex feelings of the bereaved families.

Challenging for me, I have deep feelings of empathy for these bereaved families, and know some of them personally. I was surprised by their open-mindedness and the rare quality they have of taking a distance to observe their trauma with such honesty and in fact sometimes with humor. This powerful quality goes to prove a desire to live over any other .I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of the project and for the trust of the parents circle - families forum. I thank the Israeli Cartoon Museum for their professional support which they give unconditionally. It is only left for me to salutethe courage of these families and hope that the smiles will give them strength on their pathto reconciliation

Each project brings with it magical people, the number one wizard who comes to mind, is Kichka, without his black book of spells, and his special charm, how would we have found so many willing cartoonists from all over the world who without a minutes hesitation agreed to be part of "Cartooning in Conflict" . So thank you for your patience and care.Thank you to all the Cartoonists who shared their work and themselves and understood the need for a catalyst for the Parents Circle Families Forum to spread their message of hope and reconciliation. It is incredible how quickly you responded and how your work can make a difference.Galit seems to be a lucky name for us, the twofrom the Israeli Cartoon Museum, made the idea into a reality and immediately understood. This kind of unconditional support is worth diamonds so thank you.

Avi Rotem from Newton Printers, you are more than a friend to the Parents Circle, and we can not thank you enough for your advice and help. You make impossibilities work.A special thank you to Vered Weinberger from the Parents Circle, without her, no show. Also to Aaron Barnea and to Roni Hirchenson who make dreams come true. Another very special thanks to Tamara Helou, who has an eagle eye for mistakes and for her translation into Arabic. And last but not least – Robi Damelin, with her vision, capacity, unending energies, belief and mobilizing drive. If there is anybody that carried this project from its very beginnings that’s Robi. She deserves all our thanks and recognition.
